Elliott was brought to my knowledge some twenty years ago, but just recently noticed I am actually able to play his songs on guitar somewhat decently, good stuff! And getting this proficient has taken at least(or well on my way) those 10.000 hours of practice. Still, this recorded clip is fantastic! This is recorded by Swedish Radio, its public service radio and they have tons of these high quality recordings, by alot of artists performing in Sweden of all sorts, metal, jazz etc. My dad recorded this show of the radio in 98 when they aired it, on cassette. I was 13. But he didnt tell me about this even though I was into alot of alternative music about the time. I saw Elliotts name during the years in the periphery when reading magazines and on internet, but never gave it a listen. In 2003 when I was 18 and Elliott died, I read about it and started to listen to him at a friend, we got really hooked. And I was telling my dad about my new discovery and he looked this cassette up and gave it to me and I just loved it. Even though I was a bit angry at him not telling me earlier about Elliott Smith and the cassette. It would have been amazing to have known him when he at least were alive. But anyway Im so glad to have just heard this piece of music.

@@TarrinKael wish I could say the same, as far as "fine now" goes. Alas. Still getting beaten up by life, in every turn where I have no control of events. Sabotaged by circumstances not of my making, ones specifically discussed and attempted to steer clear of, only to find myself lied to, and smack dab back in the middle of something toxic and destructive. And so defeated that the stuff I actually have a say in i can't bring myself to push forward enough to matter/affect any real change. The broad strokes are always the same, with highlights thrown in for flavor; one might end up stealing from me in an online credit card scam, who all the while insisted that she was not ever asking for financial assistance from me... Another might have their "actual boyfriend" (surprise!!) Come in from out of state to jump me in the dead of night on my way home... or there was the one who seduced my best friend. Or maybe it was the other way around. Maybe ill be surprised with the only time I ever had a brush with pregnancy, discovering the fact months after it had been terminated, and I had never had any knowledge of its existence prior to that moment. Already lifetimes too late... It all reads like bad fiction, and it seems initial circumstances make no difference to the outcome; if im clean or using dope. Seeking a relationship, or being sought. Looking for a project, or specifically avoiding crazy and seeking out level heads. The result is always the same. Back alone, confused, lied to, hurt, and watching someone who told me I mattered nmw (which actually meant Not at all to Me Whatsoever,) arm in arm, genitals in genitals, with whoever is the biggest piece of shit and also available to mistreat them at the time. No friends have ever stayed, no lovers have been above board. No one shows me the basic respect of telling me how little I matter to them to my face. And over the course of ~20-25 years or so the only common thread is me. So my current thinking is even though I can't understand it, the fix is in, and whatever it is, there is a mark on me, the mark denotes my fundamental nature as "disposable." If 1 person would fight to keep me in their life 1 time, or even just opt to engage when I would still reach out, making the effort for them...I might have not started listening to the whispering doubts. But that is not the way it is. No one stays. No one tries. I can't even blame them, anymore. Nap time now; I'm far overdue some nightmares. Cheers, glad it ended for someone. I wish it would end for me, one way or another. But it won't. Trying to get used to that. Sorry for the novel of stuff no one wants to bother reading junking up the feed. Sometimes this is the closest thing i have to talking to someone.

From the bit about pregnancy I'm guessing you're a girl, but I can still relate to most of what you wrote and I can understand it with ease. You know, for me the self-abuse ended when I realized I was actually too good to do these things to myself. It was probably blind luck for me to see that, but I did, thanks to people I knew and my own life experience. Always smarter than most, but always sad and always worrying. In the end, I just stopped listening to my head and started following my gut. I can still feel the fear and the anxiety every day. I just ignore them and tell myself they aren't real. It's like Russel Crowe from the movie about the genius mathematician, he just ignored his visions. Try that, friend, try not listening to your fears, like when you were little and just played around and followed your heart. Try being careless, day to day, with the smallest plan for the future, but living for today and trying to help yourself!

When I first started listening to his music, i assumed the guitar work had been doubled up, like his vocals often were. Then I caught a bunch of his live performances, when he's playing alone, just himself and a guitar. And ALL THAT SOUND is coming from those 6 strings. Rhythm, melody. Some percussive elements all woven together. Positively mind boggling to me. Playing some chord progression and picking out a harmony or melody or whatever it is more knowledgeable people could explain correctly, it blew me away. The opening licks of Angeles, at the very beginning, so enriched and involved, brought me to tears. All these tight shows, in his prime years, captured something bright in his enjoying the performance in a way that wouldn't always be there. Breaks my heart.

knuckle12356 if you’re into this type of acoustic playing you should check out Neil Young’s album Live at Massey Hall 1971. Exact same mixture of lead, rhythm, and percussive elements and it is just him and his guitar on stage. Also, Elliot covered a few of his songs live, so that should show how good Neil is if nothing else does.

I saw him live in either 1998 or 1999 in Charlotte, but unfortunately then I was not very familiar with his music. He exuded this introverted kindness, while also damn funny. The crowd was small because the Rolling Stones were playing in Charlotte that night, so of course he came out wearing a Stones t-shirt! I remember him coming out for a smoke during a break, and I don't know how to describe it, he just felt like one of us, part of the collection of outsiders. I really discovered his music 20 years later, at 43. Now I obsessively listen to him. What a fool I was to not fully appreciate what I witnessed at that show.

I was just getting into Elliott Smith and working on a barge in the Black Sea off the coast of Varna, Bulgaria when I heard that he had passed. It was a freezing, snowy, grey day and I was in a conex box on deck listening to my Arcos Jukebox (early days of MP3 players) and drinking a cup of black coffee thinking how Ironic is it that I just found out about this guy and was going to find out when he'd be in Houston and now I will never get to see him play live. Great recording; love it.

I love the interview with a lady-friend of his who was also a performer (before he was very well-known. I think near the tail end of Heatmiser,) and she mentioned Elliott to her producer or manager, someone in the biz. She was asked, after playing a track of his for them; "are any of his other songs this good?" Her: (with a good-natured jealous bite...) _Are you kidding? They're ALL this good..._ Amen. The easy poetry just stacked with layers of meaning, entendre, beauty, and pain. Woven into music peppered with chord progressions and changes that make little sense and shouldn't work, bent into something half-tamed and crushingly beautiful. And they flowed from him like _water._ Or so it appeared. Such an incomparable talent.

Richard Langford that was still a good show. Christian Brothers electric was never something I thought I wanted till they busted that one out. I was lucky. Got to see him 6 times. Twice before miss misery, ...back then, he was an underground god of such epic proportions it’s difficult to quantify. It wasn’t till 2002 that I saw him and he was so fucking high he nodded off and dropped his guitar directly after taking the stage. Didn’t finish one song. Everyone was hella confused. I think you can actually find it, (showbox 2002 I think) but I really wish they’d take it down. He wasn’t well.
