This video explores a highly compelling cause of ALS, how it may have given Lou Gehrig himself ALS, and how the ALS Association is ignoring it all.

I was debating to myself whether I should watch this video or not. My father passed away from ALS in 2012. Ironically we are from Two Rivers, Wi where that study took place (this is the first I have even heard of it). He was born and raised there. It breaks my heart thinking if we had known this, how that information could have varied his treatment plan and potentially saved or extended his life. Thank you for making incredibly science based and informative videos. I have recently begun a vegan lifestyle and videos like yours help me educate my friends and family better than any I have seen on KZbin.

You do not get ALS from eating meat or fish. It's clearly a genetic trait that researchers haven't discovered yet. Futhermore lately NFL players are being diagnosed. Obviously traumatic brain injuries can be a cause of ALS. Maybe Mic the vegan can search wikipedia for that answer.

@@_DrDrakeRamoray I am definitely not a doctor, but it would makes sense that there would be a toxin-related cause in relation to a neurodegenerative disease. Also how do we know if something is genetic or the people in the family are eating a similar diet? He referenced a lot of legitimate studies in this video and to overlook that is a bit biased. Genetics probably do play a role but I would venture to guess that certain genetic markers make someone's reaction to bmaa more adverse.

ALS is a symptom diagnosed illness, not a caused based diagnosis. It has enough differences between people where there is not likely any one cause. I personally hate seafood. I always have. Rarely I will eat tuna, but usually no. My symptoms started in my hands and feet, and then moved up then now it is going for my throat. My type of ALS appears to be related to toxins, not to what you are talking about. I lived next to a cotton farm for many years. If you look into it, there is also a connection between toxins like agent Orange, and many diseases. ALS is supposedly not one according to the VA website, but there is enough people exposed to Agent Orange and other toxins that get ALS that it is hard not too see some relationship there. Getting back to me, in my case the M.D. that I am seeing linked mine most probably to toxins. Luckily we caught it early. I cut out all artificial colors, preservatives, and am trying to reduce the amount of food with Glyphosate. Oats have tons in them, as does wheat. I am not allowed oats anymore, even organic. I get heritage grain organic wheat from a local farm. It is very hard to do on my budget, but I am way obsessed with cutting out all chemicals I can. Yes, this has not included cutting out fish, but I never eat fish much anyways. Organic as much as possible, and beware of all cheaper meats. In my life, this is certainly not a cure. The disease is still progressing, but far slower than it had been. My symptoms are 100% better. I cheated once with a few brownies and I was stiff and sore for days afterwards. If anyone is getting ALS that reads this, I would also immediately cut out ALL food that has high levels of Glyphosate or that has artificial colors or preservatives. Yes I personally know that is very hard, but I do that myself because it makes a night and day difference for me. Again, everyone may have different triggers, but there is NO good reason to eat artificial chemicals. Distilled water helps for me as well. It has no added fluoride, as many brands of water can (Even though it is not labelled). Fluoride is a neurotoxin, and not a nutrient. Much of the fluoride you get is not medical grade, but rather industrial waste grade anyways. Do what you will, but this works for me. Cut out artificial chemicals as immediately and drastically as you can. Also, check your environment. Do you live near a farm or some business that uses a lot of chemicals? Do you use a lot of weed killer or other chemicals yourself? These are important questions. Doctors will not admit the cause for the most part. It is up to us to be extra careful.

i think as he mentioned mercury is linked to ALS and I have seen studies recently regarding pesticide consumption and links to ALS . I think the BMaA connection is just one MAJOR cause of this disease but might not be the ONLY cause. Also it may only take one bad piece of seafood that is loaded with this stuff to cause this disease. Im sure there are different mechanisms at play within each persons body also. Also of note is I saw a study where it showed that some animals didnt exhibit symptoms of ALs until many years after consumption of BMaA

Hunter spent all of his non-baseball life on the coast of North Carolina, eating a lot of seafood and also hunting and eating the animals (ducks especially) that survived by getting their water and food from that same coastal area. @jcm9698

I have to disagree. I hate seafood, I don't eat it! Though I believe I got ALS from my time in the military as the vaccines are loaded with neurotoxins like mercury and aluminum, amongst the other insidious adjuncts they add to vaccines. Also, 60% of ALS patients are veterans irrespective of age, gender, length of service etc... I am curious to your thoughts on that?
@MictheVegan
@MictheVegan 8 жыл бұрын
+Janet Marcella Glad you brought this up! There is speculation that the same neurotoxin, BMAA, that accumulates in seafood also accumulates in deserts, i.e. Desert Storm. It is breathed in as dust. But as you say, irrespective of length of service means that's probably not the main reason and that dust just isn't concentrated enough - especially when compared to fish. Any neurotoxin probably increase the risk of ALS, so toxic load from vaccines could certainly do it. There is no denying that there is mercury in the vaccines. They absolutely need to test toxin brain levels in soldiers before and after vaccines. That could give the answer. However, I do not believe that this discredits the BMAA cause. It probably didn't cause your ALS, but not everyone slips on a banana peel :)

EXCELLENT question! This may be one of the reasons why Dr. Greger advises against spirulina. Not because spirulina itself produces the toxin, but other competing algae can live in the same water and do produce toxic compounds. It all depends on where and how it is grown, but how does one know for sure? Eat your kale and leave the expensive supplements alone.

Hi Mic, after learning that most cyanobacteria produce BMAA, I am very worried that my B12 supplements could be introducing unsafe levels of BMAA into my body-- owing to the fact that cyanocobalamin and others are harvested from bacteria and it begins with "cyano." I'm not sure if the bacteria that produce cyanocobalamin and methylcobalmin also produce BMAA. Could B12 supplements pose a risk, especially the cyanocobalamin kind? I'm very troubled over this as I've stopped taking my B12 supplement for now, but I don't want to become deficient either. 😕 I know you said water laced with cyanobacteria probably isn't posing a harm and that it's the meat that is the real source of BMAA, but could the B12 vitamins have higher concentrations than plain water that's been contaminated?

coworker was diagnosed about 8 years ago --- he was 40 then and died about 4 years later and I do not recall this topic ever coming up though we talked a lot over those last few years. I do not recall if he ate a lot of seafood etc. though he was in the navy for many years I suppose he could have been in the position to eat more when he was at port etc . Also anyone who was ever in to salt water / reef tank husbandry will tell you as I was until about 10 years ago that Cyano was the arch enemy of a healthy tank! We generally called it Red Slime and once you got it well you had better take drastic steps to rid your tank of it quickly before it took over the tank.... I had a 300 gallon tank and got it once and ended up doing massive daily water changes for a month (which is not cheap when you throw in the cost of salt and the hour plus a day spent vacuuming out every spec of it that appeared before it spread) ....There were for sure toxins in there that would kill things that ate it pretty quickly (within weeks) as well as it taking over any coral.... So I for one have no doubt this is a candidate for sure as to root cause or at least a contributor to ALS

+Dean Johnson Aww man sorry hear about your coworker. Yeah cyanobacteria seems to a pretty gruesome, but widely overlooked issue. I wonder if some people are more sensitive to BMAA than others. He could have been eating a normal amount of seafood but reacted to it. Who knows.

Do you eat a lot of meat? Most factory farms feed their animals large amounts of seafood to fatten them up and give them easy protein. So the BMAA builds up in them too. Maybe try cutting out meat for a while and see if it helps anything.

Fascinating video and definitely seems like a pretty solid theory.... I wouldn't be drinking spirulina either. If it came out that seafood was a cause for even 10 percent of als cases, it would destroy the seafood industry and there is no way they would let that happen.

Good info. Will have to investigate more. I'm showing both upper and lower motor neuron symptoms. I'm a very big seafood eater. More in the last 5-10 years of my life than the rest. Maybe there is a genetic predisposition if this is part of the cause. Otherwise we'd have a lot more people than just 30,000 out of 320,000,000+. I'm studying Nervous System Introduction through Khan Academy to help put this all into perspective. If you're going through this and searching for answers, I highly recommend this. It's really helpful understanding what's going on on a cellular level.

It is a puzzle. Does BMAA contribute to ALS? Yes. If you were to completely remove BMAA from the planet (impossible), would people still get ALS? Yes. Would less people get ALS? Most likely. It is absolutely dependent on the genetic composition of your own DNA and your susceptibility to toxins (neurotoxins) and contributing factors in the environment that lead to your ALS. If your als is sporadic. If it is Familial, it's different- which is very very interesting. How can something that can be caused by environmental factors also be genetic? *not* *so* *wise* to polarize everything like this video did.
