Part 1 of Women Around the Messenger: see the full course with Shaykh Akram Nadwi at bit.ly/sahabiyyat
***
This course examines the lives and contributions of several major female Companions (sahabiyyat) as well as their relationship with the Prophet. The introduction clarifies issues we face when analysing this subject historically such as the impact of culture upon our religious understanding as well as the contrast between earlier and later practices. The lives of the major female Companions are covered individually as well as their role and impact upon the Prophet, the early Islamic society, and their legacies. Topics such as gender equality, parenting, flexibility of the Islamic framework, as well as the importance of context are thoroughly discussed.
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
• Understand the role of the female companions (sahabiyyat) of the Prophet
• Understand the importance of retaining proper perspective in study and analysis
• Understand the uniquely central role of women within Islam, both of the sahabiyyat and today
• Understand the fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) relating to parenting in Islam
• Understand the fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) relating to gender equality and responsibilities

In 2018 Shaykh gave a lecture on women's rights and dignity in India. At the end of the lecture, it was evident that most men were uncomfortable after listening to his lecture. One of them justified it by focusing on the relevancy of Indian culture.

They probably felt guilty about their own behaviour and were thinking how to change it.Not necessarily because they did not want but how it will look to the people around him(family, friends, even own wife)when he will start to be unlike him.

Shaykh Jazakallah, Thank you for enlightening us! I have two questions: 1) You taught us that we should follow the Qur'an and Sunnah, I understood. But if I question someone about the authenticity of anything regarding any belief, I will be told that "Qur'an is also interpreted by Ijtehad, so whatever is the fiqh is the Qur'an". So then does it become Fard for me to follow fiqh blindly? What about our heart, when our heart doesn't settle on fiqh rather prefers to know exactly what is Sunnah, what do we do? 2)Sir, you said there is no teacher and disciple, but the Prophet (SAW) called himself a Mu'allim. How will we approach that Hadith. Jazakallah, I hope I get an answer. It would be an honor.

I believe shaikh meant by Ustadh and deciple is in the sense people follow the teachers blindly and students are expected not to question the teachers. This is my understanding. I would love to hear from Shaikh too.

@@mohammadsirajuddin1342 Shaykh is my ustad since 2005 and I have been regularly attends to his classes. He encourages and prepares his students in the class to raise the question and he always answers them. He teaches us to read carefully, study properly and then think properly. Use your mind and if you have any question please ask me in answers time. He isn't never expected and never said to follow him blindly. His purpose to teach it properly and then it is entirely up to us.
