That's my dad on bass with Mel in the first clip and when they go back to the conservatory, Harry Babasin... he is the credited bass player at the end of the film... he met a Brazilian guitarist on this film, Laurindo Almeida, and were the first to fuse Brazilian rhythms and modern jazz a decade before the term Bossa Nova was even coined with the Laurindo Almeida Quartet, on Pacific Jazz in 1953... Hollywood jazz history at its finest!

The Louis Armstrong Lionel Hampton routine makes me wish Louis didn't go to the All Stars and trad reportoire in the late 40's (as good as it was) and kept his wonderful big band. For my money Armstrong sounds best in that sort of hard swinging circumstance like a Lionel Hampton Duke Ellington big band (Paris Blues) or Louis Jordan's jump combo (the 78 on Decca around 1950). Terrific music by all the groups here - esp Charlie Barnet and Armstrong w Hampton.

This is based on "Ball of Fire" from 1941, with Gary Cooper in the professor role, and Barbara Stanwyck as the femme fatale. Originally based on a story by Billy Wilder. "A Song is Born" is directed by the great Howard Hawks and has a constellation of great musicians, including Benny Goodman (with mustache), Louis Armstrong, Lionel Hampton (vibes), Mel Powell (piano). Danny Kaye plays the shy guy prof role, and Virginia Mayo tries to carry the smolder on her shoulder, but isn't as incandescent as Stanwyck. Nice movie for the music!
@vonbabasin95445 жыл бұрын
Both films were Howard Hawks... my father was the bassist and he said they would literally watch clips of Ball of Fire and then improvise the dialogue for this film... Danny Kaye was famous for his improvisational technique
@esmeephillips58883 жыл бұрын
Virginia Mayo was always dubbed. She could dance but does not do much in this movie IIRC. She was too much the nice girl. Barbara puts the sleaze in.
@srothbardt3 жыл бұрын
@@esmeephillips5888 THANKS for this. Very interesting. You're right about V. Mayo. Maybe they used her because Barbara Stanwyck would steal the show from Danny K
@esmeephillips58883 жыл бұрын
@@srothbardt 'Ball of Fire' had come out only seven years before. Don't think Missy would have wanted to revisit an old part (with singing dubbed at that) so soon. Besides, Kaye's was a fragile ego and he would not have wanted to work with a woman who boasted she could steal any scene- and Stanwyck often did. Danny was happier to appear with gentler ladies such as Dinah Shore and Doris Day. He lacked sex appeal. Virginia Mayo was in four films with him, so they must have been simpatico, but is she remembered for more than her beauty? (Btw, some of her maquillage in 'A Song is Born' is awful.) The film broke Danny's run of hits under Goldwyn. He restored his reputation with a smash season at the Palladium, like Judy later. But when he came back it was as an 'all-round family entertainer' rather than a romantic lead.
@sirmontyrock2 жыл бұрын
I always likew A Song Is Born. fun film. Great music, too. Tommy Dorsey, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton and Mel Powell all in the same band? Can't go wrong there. Fine performances from the mind-blowingly talented Danny Kay and the mind-blowingly beautiful Virginia Mayo.

Well great music of all times, pity that just a few people looks at good and I would say sustainable music, because this was the base of the good music at all times. Example Laurindo de Almeida which has greatly contributed to the so called modern jazz, and later on Bossa Nova, we can say is one of the highest contributes for the guitar playing music all over the world. My congratulations to all of these great artists which really mad3 good and soundable music....
