I'm kinda surprised that you didn't talk about how some games let you make your own color palette like Rivals of Aether, Melty Blood, Capcom vs SNK 2, and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum.

I was about to bring up one of those, specifically Capcom Vs SNK 2. Isn't that new Fatal Fury: Mark Of The Wolves doing a whole color palette editing thing too? 😮 I might've been seeing things, but I saw a clip of a character having the color of their attire changed, even adding patterns, like tiger stripes.

I'm a real odd one out when it comes to alt colors. I absolutely cant deal with them. It throws me off so much if something isnt in the default color, because my brain just keeps nagging "No, it's not supposed to look like this". And I literally cant concentrate on the match. Thats why the ability to lock opponents into a certain color and outfit in Street Fighter 6 is such a godsend for me.

This makes me wonder how you feel about alt colors like ones on the marvel side of the sprite-based MvC games, does it still mess you up to see spider-man slightly hue-shifted? Where’s the point where it will?

@@CitrusBone_YT It's mostly from completely different colors. Taking your example spiderman from MvC2. I'm fine with the all colors except hk since those are basically just spiderman with different saturation and contrast. But a completely different color like hk throws me off

I used to mod Super Smash Bros for Wii U, and was specifically a texture modder. Just seeing characters decked out in different colors, often referencing something that either only I would get or that just looked much nicer to me felt pretty good. In particular, though, alternate colors are also functional. Doing recolors for Sm4sh made me appreciate how the devs often tried their hardests to give each character's 8 different alts a different color, mainly so you can tell apart the two Marios at a distance to know which one is being played by your little sibling on the couch who is your teammate in this fight, and which one is a computer player you added for the sake of having a quick round. This also applies to other fighting games to a lesser extent, where if both players just had Ryu with his white gi and brown hair, telling them apart in a match would come down to memorizing what each player did in the *entire* match so far, making it really inconvenient.

True! I never thought about it, but with 8 player smash its much more important to have distinct colors than in a traditional fighter where youll only see 2 characters at a time, cool insight!

GGST's colours are definitely my favorite and what I love most about some skins in fighting games are when they change the colours of attacks it adds a whole other layer of aesthetic to the character. Testament colour 10 is my favourite with this cuz it makes their attacks a purple-ish lilac colour its so pretty

0:30 speaks so much facts. I'm a Strive Bedman player today simply because someone made a palette based off Date & Mizuki from peak fiction AI The Somnium Files. I was on Umbrella in Skullgirls for her Mitsuru palette but then saw Eliza had a palette based on Red from Transistor - another of my favorite games - and I picked her up right there and then. Hell, I was really big on modding BBTAG & making custom palettes there when it was still fresh. I learned music modding for that game just to fully immerse myself in the All-Star Battle/Eyes of Heaven hybrid of a JoJo game I had in mind long before ASBR came out with palettes for the Investigation Team based off Bruno's part of Passione (simply because Narukami's JPVA also did Giorno in the games) and their IK theme being a custom mix of Il Vento Doro I made to sync with their win pose at the end. I miss those days - still very proud of that Yukiko Abbachio & Azrael Diavolo I made back then. Even expanded it to the other parts - made a Josuke Kurogane for the same shared VA reference (;-;7) Sorry for the ramble, I'm mildly autistic about alternate palettes.

Palmod is a great tool for a lot of old fighting games. It lets you change the colors the way you want. It's especially good for the Marvel Vs Capcom games because you can make your team wear matching colors.

So glad someone brought up Palmod! The first thing that got me into making modded fg palettes was making palmods for jjba:hftf, and later, third strike. Truly a fantastic tool

Great title, immediately caught my interest. The first thing that came to mind with letting people create their own colors is them making the color palette as unreadable/dark as possible to gain an advantage. On the flipside, colors that use green, in my opinion, are a mild handicap, because green is the most visible color on the color spectrum. (Think a traffic light or a fps crosshair)

While I am not the greatest at King of Fighters XIII, I absolutely love how the cast have insane colour costumization, down to even things like the sole of the shoes, the studs on a belt or even other cool details like Kyo's clan symbol on his gloves and jacket being costumizable, you can even set it as the same colour of your jacket to get rid of it entirely (or color in the empty space inside the symbol), which allowed for all manner of crazy stuff. A bunch of characters had EVEN MORE options if you press start when selecting them, such as K' suit getting coloured in halves for each arm and leg individually, a tiger stripe pattern for Joe's pants, or even removing Raiden's mask to reveal Big Bear. I wish more games, 2D or otherwise, would strive to get to that level of customization again. I've pretty much filled up all the custom colour slots for my mains.

great timing, ive been playing super smash flash 2 my whole life but about a month or so i started thinking a lot about the palettes i use for each of my characters, i even played a friend in samus dittos to determine who kept gravity suit (i lost, tbf it was our 2ndary skin in a character neither of us mains lol, BUT I LOST :,c )

My favorite alt color/outfit system was in KOF Maximum Impact 2 where they also change character outfit textures and also sometimes the nationality of your character

1:02 I don't know which you meant but MK2 and after had alt colors for Player 2. Subzero and Scorpion had very slight brightness and hue changes Subzero being a lighter blue Scorpion being closer to an orange yellow. Liu Kang even had a blue outfit in places the red was.

There's also KoF and their color schematics in all of their games from 94 to XV, even majority of them are super obscure reference colors, and some well known. Heck, Raiden has a Venom and a Pooh skin in XIII that made me curious to play him, and that's just enough for me to tell. Oh and KoF XI has RoA levels of modifying colors, it's nasty (good kind)

one of my favorite bits of melty blood TL is the fact that you can make custom palettes, to the point where i have 2 palettes for my main, one that just looks kinda like me for when im playing normally, and this other much more pale and purple palette that i use when im playing inebriated, its fun

This one facet is a good example of why French Bread is still the best fighting game dev around. Thirty free colors out of the box and the ability to make your own versus just two and please buy the rest, or just ten with a few DLC ones sprinkled in over several years. This is partly why I have no qualms about buying multiple copies of their games across different platforms.

Noooo I wish you mentioned the color customizing in MBTL! You can make your own references with that, it was so great, makes you wonder why don’t all FGs have this! I put Kouma into some Super Mario overalls, and Miyako into Danganronpa 3’s Angie colors. Of course a lot of people just did Batman Joker colors though. Anywho, it doesn’t get anymore personalized than custom colors instead of choosing preset ones. Any other FGs that do it? I think SFxT had it. I definitely remember old fighting games doing colors by button instead of menu, and you couldn’t change it once you selected your character because arcade design. Unappreciated modernizing right there.

In third strike they are 7 color for each character so basically i choose one of them for each day of the week : Monday = lp Tuesday = lk Wednesday = mp Thursday = mk Friday = hp Saturday = hk Sunday = lp+mk+hp

This is why I stopped played Street Fighter 6. You have to pay money for alternate colors. Each character only starts with one other color option. It's some of the worst monetization I've ever seen in a full priced game. I can't wait for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves...you will be able to freely customize a characters colors to your hearts content.
