I won’t mind if it’s a one time thing like ubiquity or tp link but if it’s a recurring bill then it will possibly kill there products

It will only be a one time fee! And it's multi-site deployable so you can manage all of your accounts from a single self-hosted key.

@@SPXLabs Appreciate the video and feedback. We will definitely not be moving to a recurring model and it will remain as a one time payment. The other thing to keep in mind is we offer free support (including phone support). You have to pay a lot more to get that from other vendors out there 😉.

I've been interested in checking out Alta Labs hardware but was waiting on the self-hosted controller as I personally avoid any network hardware that can only be cloud managed. Seems like a really strange decision to charge for it - make the cloud version (which will cost Alta money to host long term) free, but then charge for the self hosted version? Especially disappointing since Alta appeared to follow up all of the early "cloud only" criticism with stating that they're releasing a self hosted controller soon with no mention of this not being free. Just seems like Alta sits in a strange position in the market where I can't really see a scenario where I'd ever use them - UniFi and TPLink have a larger range of products and free local controllers, and if I'm happy with cloud management, there's products such as Aruba Instant On.

Agreed, they are in a precarious situation. I fully suspect tp link to move to 100% paid cloud service. Just don’t know when. Charging for self hosted was a weird move but if they charge $49 for a license for life…. Okay fine not a big deal. But yeah I want to tread lightly. Great comment dude!

Thanks for the feedback Cameron! We'd love for you to test it out and get your input on what you like and where we can improve. While there is a small one time fee for the local controller, we also offer free support to our customers (something you typically have to pay for with other vendors). But if you really are interested in testing out Alta but aren't ready to pay the one time fee just reach out to us and we do have some ways for customers to get a free license.

There are a few things bothering me about all those Hardware Controllers: - More Hardware, wiring, Rackspace, Powerbrick & Plugs needed - more Power draw, Heat (vs none for a VM or Container) - IF it breaks you need to Rush order another one (higher cost?) - Not expandable - you can not just plugin more RAM or a faster CPU into it
