2,500 years ago the Buddha said 'we are what we think, all that we are arises with our thoughts, with our thoughts we make the world' ..is that not an inside out approach?! Meditation is about being present, its not a technique or tool. But knowing that you're creating your own suffering doesn't automatically mean you can stop the momentun of habitual thinking... that takes time for most people. Mindfulness training is a good start!

Sometimes we know its our thinking but it still takes us over, and the more we try to drop the unhelpful thoughts, the more they come

Dom WAIT! Not sure where you GOT your information from BUT.... I suspect you REALLY don't know! You said: "sometimes we know..." I suspect: you only "think" you know... Nevertheless, you don't know... SERIOUSLY -- HEAR ME OUT! 1) You're NOT being asked to "drop" anything. - there is NOTHING to drop... (simply observe, just look... ie: observe and pay attention on a deep level) 2) you're being asked to pay attention to how your thoughts R running your life. Again (no dropping anything - no action necessary - seriously, SIMPLY observe) got it? Please, OBSERVE - nothing more. (look deeply at what u are really doing) 3) Now --> IF you really followed what Dr. Bettinger said, and u paid CLOSE attention - honestly, u really paid close attention, THAT is all you need to do. 4) The actual "realization" aka: "an insight" essentially means that your ENTIRE life is -> - > made up by YOU (and your thoughts) Nothing more... Just YOU, and your thoughts.

Dom Mccaffry says: "we know it's our own thinking..." -- nahh... u only "think" you know it's our own thinking... You are BSing yourself... You're really NOT believing this paradigm...

U need to inherently know this not just intellectually xx

Yes great observations! By “trying” to drop the thinking, we’re doing more thinking.. about the thinking.. Thus energizing the original thinking and creating more thinking. The realization is there is nothing to drop.

Our mind runs our brain 🧠 I used to think 🤔 it was outside circumstances that made me feel that way wow but now I know it’s not that 😮. It’s my thinking that creates my feelings 😉

If feelings and moods come from thoughts, howcome babies have moods - as they don't yet have "thoughts" per se, they don't have a language to conceptualise their experience. It seems to me we still have moods even without prior thoughts then, only the consciousness of something that bothers us. Like hunger. Babies cry when they're hungry, which must mean there is a discomfort in them even without the thought. But they still need the food. Of course, hunger can subside and the baby goes back to sleep, but eventually no food will lead to death. So I still don't see how we can't have moods without thought, and that we don't need to act upon them. Maybe it's wisdom that tells us to go eat chocolate when you feel bad, because often times it helps - it also helps without chocolate, but with chocolate the good moods come quicker. That's where I lose myself in should I or shouldn't I...

I see this differently. I don’t see it as babies having moods; I see it as babies communicating. Babies cry to communicate that they are hungry, need changing etc, and the cry is effective as it connects with adults in a visceral way. It’s designed to elicit an immediate response. That to me is the innate wisdom of mind. Babies I feel are living in the present moment. They feel physical discomfort, then they communicate this to their caregivers. They don’t analyse, blame, procrastinate etc. It seems to me to be a beautiful state to be in 🙂 As we get older that’s when we start to pick up ideas that our moods and experiences are wholly coming from outside of ourselves.
