Alterac Valley: Then vs Now - Gorak's Guide to Classic WoW, Episode 12 (WoW Machinima)

Is there anything quite like a week-long Alterac Valley fight? Forming inter-battleground PVP-rivalries and friendships, summoning the Ice Lord or duking it out with Korrak the Bloodrager (rest his soul).
Alterac Valley sure has changed a lot since people discovered 'optimal' PVP- and honour-gaining strategies. One wonders if 'optimal' means not having fun! It remains to be seen if the longer tug-of-wars desired by some will make it into WoW Classic or if Blizzard wants to leave it as is. Personally, I'd like to see a return of some of the quests and NPC's!

Ah, old AV... I once spent over 18 hours in an AV in vanilla, the battle ranged back and forth getting all the way to the inner holds of each keep more than once but the defenders could always manage to rally, regain control of the points and force them out. Back then people still summoned, upgraded troops, coordinated via the chat, and really fought hard. As a hunter I remember going through entire bags of arrows and having to go back to buy more at the vendor several times. I must have had over 1,200 kills from that battle alone, damn that was fun.

That sounds like one of the games I played back in retail vanilla. The game itself lasted for 4 days. Towards the end, I ended up staying in for 12 hours because I did not want to miss the end. What's funny is that I don't even remember who won that epic game. But it was fun. I still like AV, but it just is not that epic experience.

As funny as it is, it also nails down MMORPG players then and now. Back then there was a certain fascination, then fun of just playing and enjoying the world, athmpsphere and lore peeps were adventuring in. Whilst nowadays it sometimes seems like the whole game is a speedrun to the end...

My fondest memories of WoW was recruiting a bunch of players for this guild I joined, nurturing it to become on of the biggest social guilds on the realm, and becoming well known throughout the ranks. I never got past level 19, and the lands beyond those of men were foreign to me. Now every guild is massive; the chat, silent. Everyone is in Discord. The only time people log in is to grind, then log out to do the same on an alt before playing a different game. The magic is gone, lost to time.

@Jonny Croxville Tires started way before mythic plus, it goes back to WotLK, the lfg dungeon queue killed having to make social relations to do dinner. I remember wrath dungeons becoming nothing but speed runs, it's where the content speed run/optimize mindset really took off

Not true lol. You people talk out of ass and probably didnt play the game since cata. - Guildchats are still alive, since many people dont like to talk on discord. - group finder is a list of active groups that are looking for players, you still have to travel to the dungeon and interact with people - huge farm groups and communities for people with the same mindset (achievements, mounts, pvp etc) The infamous "dungeon finder" is only relevant in low lvl content and not on max lvl since it only works for normal and heroic dungeons which almost no max lvl player does. If you want to join a mythic + or a raid you still have to interact with people and travel there. Where do all these misconceptions and straight up lies come from?! People just spreading false Informations to get some KZbin likes. If your guild chat is not active, maybe dont join a dead guild? "guilds are massive but nobody uses Chat" is probably the biggest lie i ever heard from a classic andy on here. My guild has like 30 players online during the day time and its full of jokes, memes and people helping each other. Were a mythic raiding guild. Fuck my life, you classic Andys are really one of a kind.. Imagine spreading that much misinformation..

05 AV was the BEST! I remember starting an AV before work, playing for a few hours, going to work for 8 hours and returning to the SAME AV and rejoining it. It was amazing.

Spot on. AV back in the day was insane. Four minute match nay four days straight one match and das dee way we liked. Spoiled heros now with their quick matches. Back then it was a war! Battling back and forth for every inch of digital ground. Matches lasting days at a time. You didn’t quit you played 24 hours straight.

Man this is spot on. Loved those days I could join AV then quit and come back literally an hour later and still see the same fight going on, and this was during BC when it was shorter. Trying to make it end actually destroyed those epic tugs of war. I would barely get any medals for gear but I'd give up loot to experience diving into something like that again. Honestly, they should rework the battleground to where your participation is the thing that counts, not when the battle ends.

The Unstoppable Force Epic Frostwolf warhammer was such a beautiful thing for warriors until they nerfed it. When combined with our Warhammer proficiency we had a 45% chance to stun per hit. For 3 weeks warriors ruled the servers who geared pvp warrior arms with Unstoppable Force.

We used to draw a line and go back and forth in Alterac Valley. I once healed like for 10 billion. If you kept the battle going you earned more honor. So ending it wasn't really worth it. Now that's not the case so ending it is all there is. Back in LK era... It was epic.
