The best venue in a SHTF situation is having 2 4 cyl diesel engines. Get 2 diesel engines from a auto wreaker or somewhere ( say the diesel Rabbit engine or Toyota from the 80s early 90s) refurbish them . Turn one into running a generator and the other can be retro fitted into any midsized vehicle. Then go to all the fast food restaurantes and mom and pop grills and collect their used fryer oil. Its super easy to proccess the fryer oil to run both diesel engins . The wood ethenol and wood grain aclcohol requires alot of work, parts and pieces, and the posibility of blowing yourself up making this. Work smart not hard. My friend ran a early 1980s suburban on fry oil for years.
@williamjenkinsiii70Күн бұрын
The fryer oil has to be cleaned and filtered plus to run efficiently it needs to be preheated to make it thinner and if you live in a cold climate it’s almost impossible to start a engine on fryer oil !

We’ve been off the grid since 2001. We built our own home off grid. Back then it was extremely expensive and difficult as there wasn’t any good information available back them. Our next project is an old steam engine from a 1940s war ship. If we have to charge our battery bank with fossil fuels, there is NOTHING more efficient than a good quality engine (Honda, Subaru etc) combined with an old style Ford alternator (no internal voltage regulator). I’ve installed and assisted with 100s of off grid systems using solar, wind and micro hydro. Nothing beats a cheap Ford alternator with a rheostat to control the field. Our battery bank is 48 volt. Greet talk on the alcohol and wood gas. We are leaning towards steam power with a Ford alternator for our emergency backup. We already have massive inverters etc

If I recall aright, the prairies have perennial switchgrass, which produces much more ethanol per unit of biomass than maize can and is a cut and come again crop which does not divert grain from edible uses. Corn is, by far, neither the only nor the best source of material for ethanol production, particularly for ethanol as a fuel.

Ive built several wood gasifiers over the last 15 year. They are great for static location engines. The technology has been around over a couple centuries. Fyi....the easiest way to use and store wood gas is as pressurized gas in cylinders and hook up to any gasoline engine just like you would for running on propane. For me, wood gas technology is definitely worth the time to learn. Oh and of all groups, FEMA has plans and sizing for basic gasifiers. I also have a still for producing nectar as well as a small solar system.

I don't remember the brand of it either but it appeared to be from the year range of 1920's to 40's. It was still running when I saw the video a couple years ago. To be commercially made like that it probably had to be fairly reliable..

FEMA in the late 70’s early 80s put out a book on making Wood gasification modifications to tractors. They did a number of things with gasification. One plan was to use a wood gasifier to run the engine of a pick up truck who had its back wheels off, but then would turn a shaft on a generator. Interesting stuff. The one big advantage of a gasification system is you can find dry wood in a lot of places

You can turn any old air compressor into a steam engine. If you have a welder you can turn any 4 stroke gas engine into a steam engine. You can use an LP TANK over a fire to heat the water. Or if you can. ,find any big tank.. with a big sealable lid. You can put anything in it. Like leaves,plastic,tires,wood basically anything that will burn. But it all is sealed inside the tank. Have a pipe hooked to the tank. That goes inside the tank. Put the tank over a fire. As long as the tank is very well sealed. When the fire heats up the tank. And the only outlet off the tank is your pipe. A gas with properties of natural gas will come out.
@simpleman52382 күн бұрын
You can also use steam to power air tools. Or also turn those into mini steam engines. Of course you would need to wear gloves to operate them lol.

A few comments: 1) wood gas does not require any chemicals or other supplies (other than wood) to keep running long term once set up. 2) Wood gas works well for both stationary power generation or for running vehicles. 3) A huge amount of info is available from the 1900s and WW2 for wood gas. 4) Fema plans exist for a wood-gas generator made from 2 metal garbage cans. 5) Ethanol production for fuel requires large amounts of materials from outside sources, which makes it a better short-term solution. 6) ATF license is required for ethanol pruduction in the quantity needed to actually run a farm or survival operation If you are doing it before shtf, ATF will make visits to make sure you are using a single distillation process. Double distillation is not allowed for fuel production. 7) Wood gas can be stored in gaseous form in tanks and bags. During WW2, airbags were used to store wood gas for use in buses and large trucks.

Pinball ,first this is a great video topic. There are a few points to consider , wood gas can be compressed into a cylinder like propane and used in a vehicle. The point you made that it depends on your local resources is key. Wood gas is a low tech option does not need special manufacturing or parts. solar will always need parts made for you. Almost forgot you can have energy when there is no sun...
@ericarnaud79832 күн бұрын
Morning Pinball. A wood gasifier is one of the projects I would love to do, but just never took the time. Just something I have wanted to do for years. Take your corn to make ethanol, how about eating the corn and gasify the corn stalks? Another project I would love to work on is a ramjet, not the most fuel efficient, but am curious if a ramjet can be run off of ethanol or a wood gasifier. 🤔

I have two old Ford trucks that are non turbo diesels. They will burn used oils petroleum or vegetable even animal fats. You do have to do some prep for the various fuels filter to some minor refining. These old trucks from the 80s are pretty tough old rigs with adequate power and good reliability. I have gotten 28mpg with the things. They have no electronics mechanical fuel pumps and injectors. They drive pretty well on old oils from behind the restaurants but you do have to do some refining but it's not hard. Diesels are not horrible in the cold to start with decent glow plugs and a block heater. I run half a bottle of atf in a tank of fuel or marvelous mystery oil 8 oz of that helps with the crappy diesel made nowdays. Just a good rig for what if.
