I am glad Dr. Marks at least talks about nutrition and natural options. That is rare for a psychiatrist. Most of the time they do not even suggest getting tested for ANY deficiency, much less discuss potential natural options. They usually just want to prescribe Lexapro or Zoloft and send you on your way. Thank you Dr. Marks for giving a balanced view of these options.

I’ve actually taken all of these listed with success. Usually on the lower dosage end. I definitely notice a mood difference between taking it and not taking it. The thing I had to do was experiment with them to discover the best time to take it. Also after having eaten or not eaten plays a part. They seem to be more effective on an empty stomach.

Jokes, Detox the mind from within with a simple practice. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety. For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. Slowly the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Day or night, when taking a walk, when reading, when on mobile, before sleep etc sit or lie down and observe your breath. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

@lisbethbird8268
@lisbethbird8268 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. Even a non slow release brand has a noticeable effect for me. It worked much much better than prozac. And I usually only take it once a day at night. It does make me sleepy and sometimes have more vivid dreams. Sometimes I add a morning dose (you should really take on empty stomach), but then have coffee after an hour or so. Two big pluses: it starts working almost immediately, and will not cause weight gain.

@lisbethbird8268 3 жыл бұрын
@@avill012 no,that hasn't been a problem. A cool thing is that you should know within just a few days if it's helping you or not, and if it bothers your stomach. No need to taper if you want to stop, just stop. But be very careful and check with a your prescribing doctor if you are already on antidepressant medication. A good reference on this and other amino acid therapeutics is The Mood Cure. By Dr. Julia Ross.
@lisbethbird8268
@lisbethbird8268 3 жыл бұрын
@Zafar Khan I found it very helpful and I know others who have as well, and none of us were helped by ssris. Prozac made me numb and fat. There's no harm in trying it out if you're not on antidepressant medication already. I have never had side effects, though Dr. Marks mentions nausea here. You should read up on it...highly recommend Dr. Julia Ross on this.

Thankyou Dr Tracey Marks, This video arrived at the right time, just as I have been having a bad episode of PTSD, due to having an eye op' last week. Have decided to tackle the effects with a dietary approach. Plenty of oily fish & greens & carrots, eggs & peppers, plus very high cocoa chocolate, walnuts & pumpkin seeds. Unfortunately lots of things good for gut health seem to be high in FODMaPs so I am constrained by that. It would be absolutely fantastic if you could do a video aimed at helping people on the low FODMAP Diet improve their anxiety & depression. There is a lack of information & advice for people with this difficulty. All the best.

Ive suffered all my life with bouts of clinical depression and anxiety, antidepressants have worked in the past but this time i couldnt cope with the vivid nightmares.. So im drug free at the moment, but each day i tell my self to get up, shower take the dog out for a walk no matter how bad I feel. Mornings are worse but evening it seems to ease... Im going to add some vitamins to my depression and anxiety fight list and see if it helps. My Calm app really helps with meditation, sleep and grounding techniques. Also Catching the negative thoughts can give you some control tell them.. Stop im not listening to you stupid thought, even try to laugh at yourself for them slipping into your head, their just thoughts which give you feelings.. Its hard but keep going.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B-3): "A number of practitioners have observed that supplementation with large doses of niacinamide can relieve anxiety in some patients. This anti-anxiety effect is presumably pharmacological, since patients who improved typically did not appear to be deficient in B vitamins, and “nutritional” doses of niacinamide (such as 20-100 mg per day) were of little or no benefit. Niacinamide in doses ranging from 500 mg twice a day to 1,000 mg 3 times per day is beneficial for some patients with anxiety, including patients with anxiety related to alcohol abuse.". "It appears that niacinamide has therapeutic effects comparable to the benzodiazepines, a class of medications commonly used for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Niacinamide’s therapeutic effects are likely not related to it acting as a ligand for the benzodiazepine receptor, even though it acts centrally and might have a weak binding affinity for the benzodiazepine receptor. Both the benzodiazepines and niacinamide exerts similar anti-anxiety effects through the modulation of neurotransmitters commonly unbalanced in anxiety."

st john's wort has enough evidence to make it a very reasonable medicine to try. I sometimes suggest it to some of my patients as a psychiatrist, but usually only if they are on no prescription meds, as it interactions with the liver in a way that can make it dangerous if you are on blood thinners, OCPs, etc. Besides that though what is not to like? Meta anayleses suggest it is as effective as SSRIs for mild to moderate depression with usually NO sexual dysfunction, which is the #1 reason people stop SSRIs.

I believe in taking prescription meds, but those type of meds make my anxiety and depression spiral, not to mention horrible side effects. I can't see myself returning to work if I continue to take the prescribed med for a month or two. Nausea, vomiting, splitting headache. My work position is very demanding on the body. Loads of walking. Movement. I actually tried Sam-e and it's been 4 days, but already sleep better and have much more focus. I can take nausea as a side effect of the AD, but can't take dizziness, headache, everything heightened,muscle cramps,extremely high blood pressure and heart rate, etc. It just does a severe number on my anxiety. It would be nice if doctors actually made a prescription meds for mental illness with least amount of side effects. Safe for those with heart condition, thyroid, cancer. Also, don't makes your immune system go down. Thank you for bringing this up. It is heartwarming to a psychiatrist with an open mind, who is not against taking these types of meds.

I drink saffron- tea and find it helps against brainfog. I now only use 8-12 small saffron-threads in hot tea a day (tastes better to make two cups with half the dosage in each) when I feel the need. And I don't do it every day. I had no idea it is an anti-depressant. For me what finally cured my depression was to stop using wireless technology (I use wired etehernet-connections) and to move to an appartment with no smartmeter and low mobile phone reception. I have also started to turn off the power in my bedroom before I go to sleep, which seems to have cured some chronical pain problems in my legs and feet. Quality of sleep is so much better.

Hey Tracy! Thanks for your videos. Simply love them! As far as I know the serotonin hypothesis was rejected in the 1980s. There are studies that show that the concentration of serotonin in the synaptic cleft has nothing to do with actually suffering from depression or not. Plus, it’s not connected to its severity, that is very low concentration equals severe depression. In fact, these studies don’t even see that there is such a thing as a „normal“ or average concentration. What do you make out of that? Best, P.

I noticed that St. John's Wort has positive effects when it is boiled over low heat for nine minutes. Although I heard that St. St. John's Wort should be boiled for nine minutes, I drank St. John's Wort without boiling for a long time, but I did not see much effect. Onion juice is incredibly gut and brain relaxing, but it is very difficult to drink onion juice. Onion juice creates a feeling of nausea and distress. But if you are patient after drinking onion juice, you will feel very relaxed after half an hour. Onion juice can be less nauseating if you drink it with yogurt. Onions are in layers. The intestines and brain are also in the form of layers. Our gut is our second brain. Cabbage is also in layers. This is my own personal experience. For this reason, I cannot guarantee anything. These days, I have some thoughts about taking a shower with cold water. Cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure "rise", fats "increase" by growing in the body, diseases multiply by "spreading" in the body and can threaten life. Fire multiplies and spreads by "rising" by its nature. The movement of the fire flame is from the bottom up. Fire burns and destroys. Diseases can be devastating if not controlled. "Water" puts out the fire. Fire gives "heat" and "heat". The opposite of heat and heat is "cold" and "coolness". The movement of water is from top to bottom. So the opposite of fire. Disease represents "fever" "heat" "destruction". Just like the flame of fire spreading uncontrollably. Illnesses are often the reward for sins. Sin is identical with hell and the devil. At least the suffering of illness does not belong to heaven because all suffering is in or reminds of hell. "Cold water" can lower the spreading, rising, destructive cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, reduce body fat and cure or at least alleviate diseases. (This is just an assumption. Cold water can shock the heart. The truth is that cold water boosts the immune system, boosts metabolism and increases brown fat, which promotes fat burning. ) Plants growing below ground level, edible seeds, root crops are related to "down". These plants and roots can represent our organs such as stomach, kidney, intestines, which are located "under" our body, or it can be a sign that it will lower "down" by lowering high blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar. Increasing, expanding body fat and diseases are included in this. St. John's Wort may interact with medications. I've heard that St. St. John's Wort will not interact with drugs if it is boiled and drunk in small amounts like tea. Eating plenty of walnuts and almonds can be effective in depression. Walnuts are similar in shape to the brain, lungs and intestines. The gut is our second brain. Nuts such as walnuts and almonds have thick and strong shells. These strong shells protect the fatty tissue inside. It is fatty in our brain.(omega 3) Nuts can protect our brain and make it healthy.( walnuts and almonds) Almond shells are very hard. I am not talking about American almonds, because the shells of American almonds are thin. The holes on the almond shells resemble hair follicles. The green shell of the almond is soft and velvety like the hair. I liken walnuts to tortoises in shape. Land turtles live very long. Land turtles are very resistant to starvation for long periods of time. Walnuts can keep people full for a long time. Land turtles withdraw into their shells. In this way, tortoises are in the dark. Darkness evokes the night, the night evokes sleep, and sleep evokes serenity and peace. Walnuts increase the amount of melatonin in the blood three times. Melotonin is essential for regular and good sleep. The shells of tortoises are very hard, like almond shells, which are very hard. Honey is dense and slow flowing. Honey can slow you down. So honey can calm you down. Bees collect pollen from flowers by flying in nature and come back to the hive. Bees do not forget the location of their hives and they are very hardworking. Honey can strengthen your memory and give you the peace of life in nature. Honey never spoils. Honey can prevent your organs from deteriorating. When honey comes together with walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts that represent organs, it can prevent the organs it represents from deteriorating. Honey Walnut, Honey Hazelnut, Honey Almond... I don't speak English. I hope I write the sentences clearly.

As far as recommendations, one of the biggest natural antidepressants with extensive research behind it is exercise, specifically cardio. It is proven to have short term and long term benfits on mental health/illness. Also, you could try vitamin d supplementation and a light therapy lamp. Doctors can also prescribe you an emotional support animal. I have two dogs now, one an ESA and one is a service dog in training. They have truly made a difference on my mental health. Today, the mushroom compound is being used in clinical trials for end-of-life anxiety, treatment-resistant depression, addiction, eating disorders and other conditions with unprecedented success, and psilocybin-assisted therapy has been given FDA “breakthrough therapy” status as a treatment for depression.

Have been watching videos and reading a lot, taking natural supplements, and it didn't help me with depression. I think it's better to consult with a mental health professional.

I'm interested on your thoughts on exercise for depression. In the UK they're obsessed with it as a cure all. However I've read that in the US, research found a daily routine that also involved activity you found pleasurable like a hobby or meeting you friends was far more effective than exercise . (My worst bout of depression I was getting lots of exercise & had a very healthy diet )

i agree exercise is good for overall general health but it has no effect on depression i exercise everyday get my lung and heart rate up but i still depressed, i eat a strict vegan diet also for 36 years yet i still got depressed, i'm not going to give up my diet and exercise i believe if you cleanse the mucus out of your body by eating lots of fruits along with exercise it will help but it takes years to do based on how old you are and your weight and what your diet was before you started the cleansing diet!

Silly me, I thought this would be like make lemon balm and orange marigolds for herbal tea. I grow both and make iced and hot herbal tea with them. Works for anxiety

What about acupuncture for depression? I have a cousin who feels it has been very effective for her when other things have not. A couple friends have also had success with it for depression.

This is good info, but when are you gonna post on self-medicating and mmj or even cbd treatment for mood and pain alternatives. Thanks for sharing, rock on!

Hi Tim. First of all thanks for bench watching my stuff😀. Self-medication is an important topic to talk about. I need to think about how to approach it in a way that it's informative and doesn't sound like I'm judging people. MMJ It is also a tricky topic to talk about. I would need to do some research on CBD treatment. It's certainly not mainstream or accepted here in Georgia. So I will need to see who's using it and how. Thanks for the suggestion.

Cannabis does not help everyone. Cannabis can actually make one more depressed. It does that to me.

@@e3befree there are many options, currently I am rocking keto and walking my tail off. CBD also helps me sleep. The discussion was in reference to medical applications. Cheefin' trees is a very different thing. I hope you find a solution to your dis-ease. Exercise always helps me feel great. A combo of gym session and then rifle range time is always a great day. Be well @Angel Audio, you got this!
