This video is kind of a part 2 to my basic gear placement video, I talk about more agsillary climbing gear that you would use in more advanced climbing. Things like Tricams, ballnutz, micro stoppers, offset stoppers, and offset cams.

Love tricams. Especially in horizontal cracks. Absolutely love simple but super efficient physics of these bad boys.

Really glad that you’ve got these videos up. You’re really the only person talking about specific gear for this type of climbing. It’s good for those of us who want to branch out from bouldering and sport. Especially on the east coast where most of our stuff is trad

Gasp! Tricams are absolutely fantastic protection in the west-coast. Tons of volcanic and limestone rock that have pockets which suck to protect with just about anything other than tricams. Sure you can put a standard cam in a bunch of them, but you also risk destroying the stems doing so. Even really flexible stem cams take a beating falling on them in pockets

Actually I totally agree with you now, I brought them out a few times when guiding and teaching some trad classes and I pretty much always found a little pod that couldn’t fit anything but a tricam worked perfect for.

with the active placements on the tricams, sometimes to remove them you'll need to hook the nut tool behind the pointy tooth side, so that it doesn't cam as you slide it out

Man, tricams are amazing. Always come with me on multi pitches with gear anchors. Also, can't beat them in horizontal placements.

Tricams are the shit! I say that as an east coast climber though haha and the black one will definitely hold a fall I've taken a few massive whips on black tricams, I say black tricams because I've welded two now, thats my favorite piece haha

Fallen (trad) on a 00 wire many times - not far but they do work. They tend to stay in the rock once they take a load.

Another piece of trad. camming gear that you didn't mention is kong gypsy, I think they come in 3 sizes, simple design but big range, lightweight, and hold 15kn...

Hello Mr. Tilley, if you allow I would like to ask you a question, since you have a long experience with nuts and friends! Question: if I have not misunderstood from your video (sorry but I don't speak English) you say that both nuts and friends offsets are higher, better, they fit better in the cracks than traditional nuts and friends (I have many friends and nuts traditional, but no offsets (which is unfortunate) So, given his enormous experience, offsets are better ??? Thank you so much for your answer Best regards.

Hey man, I think the offset nuts are useful to have, and lately I’ve been bringing them out with me all the time instead of the normal ones. As for offset cams I personally havn’t been bringing those out with me on every climb, I will only bring them out when I know I’ll need them. I usually have a rack of normal cams with me and offset stoppers now.

I still have 2 each (6 total) of the original models - 2.5 (blue) 1.5 (brown) 0.5 (pink) they have "Lowe Mountaineering" branding as well as Made by CAMP on the label. Thought they were worth trying out - and they did work well just had to make sure to "set" them with a sharp tug, otherwise they might wiggle loose as you climbed.

I was sort of basing the “alternative” around being separate from my video on cams and stoppers, the title was more in the context of my videos than anything else.

Force = mass x acceleration. If you're falling and being belayed you take the force of the falling climber and the equal and opposite force of the belayer applied to the piece of protection. So it doesn't take a 600 lb person to generate 2kN of force.
