Thank You! Although I am certified in electronics, I don't know Jack about automotive. On my own I only knew up to doing an accessories load while measuring voltage to confirm the alternator works - idling versus revving the engine should cause the voltage to go up a couple of volts - if it doesn't your alt or alt buss fuse or maybe alt wiring/connector is failing. But you brought it to a new level with all the rest of the measurements on either side of the alternator to ground, getting current draw measurements by opening the circuit at different connection points and inserting your meter in series... and what it all means... Those who work on cars part time or for a living will gladly pay for this level of knowledge. Great presentation, very clear delivery, easy to follow! You earned me as a subscriber from this one video alone!

At idle my 2001 Camry battery light on the dash comes on but when the rpm’s are raised the dash battery light goes off. I checked the alternator and it was just putting out a title 11 then if I raise the rpm then it’s putting out 12.5 volts . Do these alternators have a regulator brushes on the rear that can cause this? My alternator is just 2 weeks from being 2 years old. Just wondering if could be voltage regular brushes.

Great diagnosis and im gonna check out your other videos with this impression. I have a 2009 camry I4. It's got a NAPA alternator. Upon starting the car i see that the voltage is 14.1-14.5. But after 30 mins of idle/driving the voltage drops to ~13.5 (no lights or blower motor on). Is this a sign that the alternator is degrading? Battery shows 12.5-12.56V when the car is shutoff

Thanks for the quick response. I wish you were in the northwest. O'Reilly was telling me that the voltage regulator is faulted and alternator is nearing its end too. But all that they did was hook up a tester and tuned the CCA and tested with engine on once and off once. Is their test result reliable?

Man thanks for the video.. I am an Automotive tech also, but I havent worked on many asian makes and a family member of mine bought an exact 10' camery XLE from a subaru dealership with a 30 day warranty. This family member asked me to look at the vehicle, so I did and i noticed when testing the alternator with loads on it would drop to 12.3v. I tested it also using my snap on battery, starting, charging system tester and failed for low out put. So I told them bad alternator, She then take it to the Subaru dealer she bought it from to get them to cover it. The service advisor told her it tested good no problem and asked to speak to the person who said it was bad. So I call up there (I never play the Iam a automotive Tech I know what I am talking about ego) I explian what I found and she asks me well how did you test it? I told here my DVOM and Snap on system tester. She tells me they used the same tester and it tests good. I told her look this is a 2010 toyota so it doesnt have a Smart charge system on it so the rule of them of 13.5 to 14.5 is in play here and it drops to 12.4v with loads on, thats not good. Well she says no thats fine its not going to kill the battery. I told her not today i wont but if it works like that for 1 year i bet it will. Anyway it drove me crazy what she said so I looked in the Toyota University Electrical training manual I have from a Worldpac class I took and it shows a 2010 charging system and even says at no load idle it should be 13.5 to 14, with load at idle should be 13.6 to 14.5.

Are you Jiveny Kit... in Frederick Maryland? We are in Baltimore County and have been fighting an intermittent charging problem in my sister's '09 Camry for at least 2 years. I think she had an alternator and new battery installed back around 2021 or 2022 and it never seemed to be 100% fix. I could have "guessed" that it was the alternator after testing with my multimeter like you did, but without a scan tool, I haven't been able to back test the connector on back of alternator. Also, I watched a different video a few weeks ago, that one says that the large wire you first tested is always HOT. They mention that unless you disconnect the battery, one has to be super careful not to ground out that hot wire with the wrench/ratchet or anything metal.

14.5 at the battery would be an inaccurate assumption. Some of the hondas will only have around 12.6V at idle with no loads on the vehicle. They do this help save load on the engine for fuel economy and emissions. I would expect the opposite. 13.6 at idle and 14.5 with loads on the vehicle.

Did you ever solve it? Any other symptoms? I had low idling that would cause my car to stall in the middle of traffic or at stops. Cleaning the throttle body solved that issue. However, now my alternator has gone bad within a year. I honestly believe it was b/c something was splashing antifreeze under my hood before I replaced my radiator(and perhaps some liquid got into it). I'm going to buy a multimeter first to check the fuses for appropriate voltage (to the alternator) and then proceed to use my warranty to replace the alternator as well.
