Gotta love some of the other comments trying to critique Kenny's work ethic? He has been wrenching for decades more than the age of most those commenting. Show the man some respect. There are many ways to go about doing certain jobs, most of what I see him doing, is the proper way. I can relate to his logic, like most experienced mechanics, he will make the job go as easy as possible and safely.

Kenny great idea with hot water to clean battery terminals. I’ve found the 12-20oz of water with 1-2 tea spoons of baking soda stir it up and pour. It neutralizes the battery acid and cleans better than store bought cleaners do. It’ll probably work better using hot water as you do instead of cold water!

When you’re checking the other pulleys, also check the tensioner itself. Move the pivoting mechanism thru it’s travel and feel for smoothness or signs of binding or sticking. Tensioners can be the source of the noise you heard as well.

My stepdad had a auto repair shop I've done auto repair work all my life I'm 62 now a wooden dowel works very well instead of metal the wood will give you a truer sound because metal vibrates you take the stick and put it to your ear and take the wooden dowel and put it on whatever area you want to listen to for example you can listen to your alternator you can listen to your power steering pump AC compressor put it on your rocker arms or valve covers anywhere you think you are getting a unusual noise I hope that this will help people that are working on their vehicles I have wooden dowels that are different lengths and I different lengths of wooden dowels to check different parts of the motor for example if I want to put the wooden dowel at the base of the motor where the oil pan is I just make a longer wooden dowel always make the dolls a little bit long so you do not get too close to the motor you do not want to have an accident I never wear long sleeves when working on a car and I always put my hair in a ponytail so I cannot get caught in the motor so I hope that this information will help people

The belt failed on my 2013 cummins. I have changed several belts over the years on many different trucks easy right? NOPE. What a pain . No diagram and nothing in the owners manual. Limited visibility with very little room to access. 2 hours of frustration later I gave up and took a break. Checked out KZbin and found the perfect video. Got it first try after that. I looked at my duramax today. Another 30k and I will change the belt. It’s worse then the cummins lol.

Clean lightly lubricated threads are the correct way, that is the factory method, with new bolts that come in to the line with a light coat of lubricant on them already, ready to use. Dry is not good, and dirty is worse, so clean them, and lube, for those I prefer a copper based lube, as it will at least not cause any corrosion, and allow you to loosen it again later.

On these Toyotas I've found that replacing the belt tensioner with the belt itself is the best way to go. Their hydraulic design goes bad and fails over time. Installing a new tensioner with a good quality belt will give you 100k miles of quiet and trouble free service.

@SeanBZA

Yes a little between the contact surfaces helps a lot, then tighten, clean with more of the brake cleaner to get excess out, then the terminal spray, which then will do the job of protecting the exposed metal from acid. It only works on clean surfaces, applying dirty is why it does not work well, and a nice easy way to see that the terminals have not been disturbed since you last touched them. You can use 2 half coats of different colours to show your shop work from others, just let the first one dry before the second.

What is the point of those stupid one way bearings? I can see it serve a purpose on a V-belt setup, but not on a large serpentine belt? It was made so there is no slippage of the belt? What is your take on this OWB? I think it was just another way to add approximately a $100 to the cost of an alternator?
@roberttoews2775
@roberttoews2775 Жыл бұрын
They are designed to decouple the alternator from the rotational forces of the engine crankshaft pulley and serpentine belt. Supposed to reduce clattering and squeaking of the serpentine belt and help extend the life of the belt. For my '06 Grand Caravan, alternators can range from $275 for a remanufactured unit up to $600 for a new one (in Canadian). I replaced my failed clutch pully for $40 (I did the labour myself). It definitely can pay to just replace the part (when you can).
