We have had a string of BC's starting in the 60's, they were all individuals. Some athletic frisbee , etc., nuts, some quiet companion dogs. All were endearing "characters" that loved affection and "going somewhere" . They do all right without constant vigorous exercise but benefit from obedience training. Most important is to teach them "come!!" when called.

I have a black female short haired border collie, 1 year old. She loves Tennis balls, also play fighting with my cat. She is very confident and very stubborn but I did break her of her nipping habbit early on. Her biggest issue is other small animals, she wants to stair them down and taunt them but she rarely ever barks and would never hurt them. Good dog over all. She loves to play rough and pretend to be tough but she is a sweetheart.

Just wanted to add that I taught my dog the command "calm" early on... I play fight with her get her riled up and then tell her to calm. It took a while but she responds immediately to the command now.

I adopted my bc, Finn, 4 1/2 years ago from my local no kill shelter. I wanted a smart breed and was so happy to find him. Sadly, within a few short months, i found out he has epilepsy. It's pretty bad and i have to give him 2 different meds every 12 hours. I'm not rich but i make it happen. When he's not in seizure (most the time) he's so joyful and active. Even though epilepsy is a bc risk, i can't see my life without one. They are wonderful ❤️

Just wanted to say I am really appreciating your videos. I have a 6 month smooth coated BC and training him has been a wonderful experience. After having 2 Golden Retrievers, I find the BC's little quirks, the intense stare and their attentiveness to be such a endearing thing.

We crush water bottles in my house and my bc hates the sound. If I count to three before I do it, it’s less of a jumpscare. If you know a trigger is coming, that might help with sound sensitivity :)

I had a collie for 18 years. Best dog I ever had. He absolutely loved swimming. And I found giving him tasks in shallow water was better for him he enjoyed it more than having lot off walks

I've just lost a 17yr old bitch in Feb n I miss her so much but I need an other heartbeat in my home so I picked up an 18mnth Collie Dog from the rescue centre 2 days ago, we are getting to know each other and he has a lovely nature so I think we will rub along very nicely once I get him trained!

I really just love your channel so much! I’ve commented before, but I just had to say again how wonderful your personality and love for BCs truly is. This video is great and you’ve got such an amazing way of being both informative and also kind about it too. I cannot stress enough how right you are about the “overselling” of physical activity for BCs. When I got my Riley I was WAY out of my depth, and the hardest part was that so many people were telling me to just walk her more lol! I’ll tell you what, if I play with her for 30 mins with a frisbee (by which I mean doing little tricks and surprises that make her think too along the way), she’s WAY more happy and tired than she would ever be from even a 2 hour straight walk. Physically, Riley could and WOULD go until she dropped over, even at almost 12 years old. A stimulated and tired brain is where it’s at! That said, walks are definitely important too, but I think people make a mistake by regimenting it too much. If I take Riley on a walk where I’m just making her stand bolt upright, that does next to nothing for her. Letting her sniff and work out her environment is truly the gold ticket item. Dogs noses are their greatest strength and I think it’s a shame that in the post-dog whisperer world, so many people think that every dog should be only walking as a cardio activity, and not as something they can truly enjoy.

Very interesting 🤔 Thank you for making this video, I've learned a lot from it and I hope there are more videos like this one to come! I see my dogs in a different light, as it's always good to have different point of views on things especially regarding to our beloved doggos and training. Also to anybody who has a very sound sensitive border collie, I feel you there and you aren't alone! My Maisie is 1 years old now and she is still nuts for car sounds and other sounds. However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel! She is less distracted and most sounds that used to bother her a lot and loved to bark at don't phase her anymore and just ignores them. ^-^

Thank you so much for your detailed answers, what a great video! I hadn't realised that there was controversy around breeding, talking breeders was big at our obedience club... Which should have been called the border collie club 😅. It came to mind because my first collie was an unplanned litter at a remote farm, she is working line and is ALWAYS on. Fantastic dog, but I could literally be watching tv and I'll hear a ball drop and look up to see her staring at me even after hours of exercise, her instinct to herd is very impressive and her chosen job at home is bird patrol haha. My second collie is from a small breeder that focuses on temperament for family pets, he isn't as intense and is just very chill and is happiest to just sit at your feet at home. I'm from Australia, so swimming is a big part of our life - my dogs go to the beach or river almost every single day to keep cool in the summer so, still a mystery about the lack of doggy smell! Looking forward to your next video 😁

Thank you for your response. Yes, there are some BC's that don't have an "off" button. My Keegan is like that and I have to really work on calm time with him. But he actually was a working dog and his intensity was useful in that capacity. So we can't always have it both ways but we can harness their energy. :) I left out a section accidentally about breeders. Basically, I wanted to emphasize the importance of breeders who do their research, and who take seriously the genetic issues that are preventable, and who continue to develop a better version of the breed. Without great breeders, we lose our great breeds! And the doggy smell, yep, even though my dogs aren't swimmers they get wet frequently in my creeks and pond and no doggy smell here either. I do think that oily skin can be a factor, maybe BC's have a drier skin?

My border collie knows what belongs in the neighborhood and what doesn't. She is an extremely good guard dog. Very alert, and won't let birds come within a mile radius of my house. She is very vocal when she needs to be to keep me alerted to what's going on. If you don't have something for them to herd get them a medium sized ball that they can " herd". Kick it around the yard so they can exercise that part of their natural behavior. ( When she gets bored she'll move it around the yard on her own )

Great video to help border collie owners, actually mine is only part border. Behaviors you've mentioned I have seen and we are working on them. The biting is common, always likes some thing to chew; she's still just a pup. But the whining is what can get to you - bored, need something been hard to figure out. Overall good dog tho, part lab and I think she is very trainable, but have to agree with one of the comments "Come when called!"

Great video and you show that you have experience with many individuals. No matter the bread, some individual are easier than other. Same with any other creature including humans. Learning to deal with a specific personality is comming with ... experience. I had a few dogs in the last 40 years and I have my second Border Collie. Those dogs are amazing but they still have their own personality.

I found the same thing from the beginning…i know some dogs need to learn to relax, so I started nap time from the start, after being awake for an hour my pup needed a nap, so I’d put her in the crate and she’d fall asleep. Now she’s 19 months, i was a great bed where I work and she will come in for an after lunch nap… But i want to train going to a spot to relax, especially when the grandkids are here, or when I’m outside working….if there’s a remote chance i might play she’s super alert to be ready. Planning to watch your training suggestions for that.

My Zeke is wonderful and smart as are most BC's but confidence is not an issue LOL! H's wonderful with all other animals! He's mad friends with wild bunnies that live in our yard and I'll find thm all laying in the yard just feet apart and these rabbits coming right up to him for attention! it's hillarious! I had a BC for just over 16 years, he 'aged out'. Very sorry to see him go. I have many funny memories of his exploits and one KZbin video. See '(dog and deer playing by Glen H)'. He was 14 at the time of this video. The biggest downside for me was his shedding. I am convinced he would shed enough every year to make two more dogs his size. It was a constant battle to keep him groomed. But... I think I would do it all over again.

I’m working on this right now…i am whistle training her for a recall…started in the house, whistle from another room, she comes and gets a fantastic treat, same for a recall from the back door to come in, whistle, she runs because she knows when she gets inside and goes into a sit, there’s a treat….so now when i see someone I’m going to recall her, treat and hold her if I have to…that’s a start, getting her to run away from the stimulating thing. I had a golden retriever I taught to bark on command, then you can teach quiet, the opposite of bark to the dog, so that would be useful. I taught him that because I didn’t want to teach him to never bark, my dog may need to alert me. My goal is for a strong recall, because sometimes i just want her to leave it….if people are in the distance she can watch them, just do it quietly….I’ve built an inside fence, probably 6-8 feet from the outside fence because people were walking up and petting her, teaching her she can visit anyone she chooses, plus killing my plants(it’s the flower beds). But also, since she’s further from the edge it’s reduced some of the intensity, she knows she can’t get to people. I’ve planted lots to block the view, that has reduced her obsessive running the fence line with another dog on the other side…that’s helped a great deal.

Read that some lakes had a great deal of algae that had caused the deaths of many dogs during the warm seasons so I was hesitant to take my Tess and her son to the nearest lake. My Tess did run around a pond at a park, chasing the geese back into it, believing it was her job to not let them terrorise the children. The parents and children loved watching her and she was very sweet towards the kids and their parents.The mgr. was not amused and told me to leash her so I did before we left. When my pups-Gem, Tess, and Gypsy-were puppies and were nipping fingers, I'd give them a nylabone toy.

I walk my dog 30-40 mins 3-4 times a day seven days a week. During our walks we play hide and seek, tag you are it, freeze--I yell or give the hand signal for freeze and he has to stay until he is released. I started during this from day one while teaching the recall command, the result has been a dog that turns on a dime every time I whistle no matter what. People see this and they tell me they want a dog like mine, and I tell them if you are willing to put in the time every day no matter what then sure a bc is for you, if not go with a different breed. Our 'play sessions' are training sessions. And that is while we are outside, when we are inside, we do a lot of nose work, puzzles etc, and very importantly: we sleep just as hard as we play. You have to have balance, it can't be just be go, go , go all the time. My dog is not a social butterfly, he is very aloof with people and other dogs, and that is okay with me, I don't force him, and I go out of my way to make sure during our walks he has the space he needs. Being owned by a bc has been the greatest honor and privilege of my life. Will be very sad when I can no longer have a bc because of age and health issues.

We have a 5 year old rescued BC. She is wonderful. Very calm, doesn’t bark, but is difficult to engage in any kind of play. She’s very affectionate and has to always see where we are, but isn’t clingy like our Goldens were. Her biggest issue is her noise sensitivity even to the point where if she knows it’s raining, she almost anticipates thunder. She has improved over the years, but is still very fearful of thunder and fireworks. We have tried just about everything. I tend to ignore it where my husband gets anxious and worries about what she’s hearing and her reaction. She no longer barks at the thunder, but will just go into her “safe” place and shake until it’s over. Is there more we should do? We’ve tried giving her her favorite treats when she’s exhibiting fear, but I think she’s onto us.

I don't know if this will help your girl but I have a video that talks about what I do when I know there will be fireworks. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nIqxaKumr6mkb6s Also any games and training that help build her confidence will help with sound sensitivity too. I will be posting a video about novelty boxes soon, that could be a fun one for her. Basically fill a cardboard box with a few soft things (toys etc) at first then add some kibble or treats that she loves. Let her sniff and take the food. You can add plastic bottles, crinkled paper, things with various textures and let her go through it as she is comfortable to find the treats. If she is afraid of some things then you can remove them and keep it fun for her. It helps them get more comfortable with new sounds and textures.

Hi, I have a few questions, sorry. My Sheltie Toby passed away this year and I've just bought a BC puppy, Molly, she's 11 weeks old and I'm having trouble getting a collar on her. If I do not practice tricks with my border-aussie and then ask him to do one he has forgotten he starts to do other tricks he knows and becomes frustrated, I think it is sometimes best to take a step back and re-teach your pup how to do the trick, sometimes you need to take a couple steps back and just have a treat and lure her into doing a roll over as if you were just teaching her, then she may get it again. Or maybe she had a scary experience while rolling over once? My dog one time rolled over and knocked something over that scared him, he wouldn't roll over for a long time after that because he was scared.

23:09; I'm glad you support *responsible* breeders as well as rescues. I'm the same way. I've heard some people say that breeders are evil and there needs to be mandatory spay / neuter laws. My response to that is similar to yours. There has been careful breeding for centuries in many cases and if there weren't any breeders, all these wonderful breeds would disappear. That would be a tragedy of epic proportions! I've mentioned it before, but I think the book, "Successful Dog Breeding, the Complete Guide to Canine Midwifery" by Chris Walkowics and Bonnie Wilcox should be on the bookshelf of every breeder. It's a fantastic book!

I realized while I've been editing part 2 that I actually left out a section where I spoke more about the importance of breeders who do their research and their testing, and who really care about the breeds. I do want to do another video specifically about this. There is so much misunderstanding about breeding, and while as I said, you can end up with an amazing "mutt", you do reduce chances of genetic disorders by using a breeder who is aware of the breed's genetic problems and does their best to keep them at a minimum. I have a 3 month old border collie that I am training as my service dog. Currently we are working on calmness and focus when I am with my wheelchair and electric scooter. Do you have any tips on teaching calmness and focus... Especially from passing cars, squirrels, other people And dogs... His lack of focus could be dangerous for him getting caught in my wheels or pulling me off of my wheelchair. Tips and advice please? Thank you

I want a collie bit I don’t know if I can exercise a collie like people say to. I get up at 3AM to find parking and start my shift at 6. I wouldn’t be able to get home until 3:30PM so that leaves me with an hour or two of play if I’m not busy on the week days.

I'm thinking about adopting a one-year old collie from a local shelter but concerned because we live in the suburbs with a very modest garden. She was found as a stray and is currently very nervous but very sweet and affectionate too. She won't walk on a leash and doesn't know any commands. I'm worried that as an inexperienced dog owner I won't be up to the challenge of training her and keeping her from becoming bored and that her instinct to herd could be a problem where we live. I work as a childminder so it's important that she doesn't start herding (and nipping!) kids. Am I right to be worried?

Love your takes on the worlds smartest pup! I have subscribed. We just purchased a 4 year old brown and white female named Zoey. She is our third Border Collie but the first female. We’ve discovered that she has a couple of quirks.. show me Border Collie that doesn’t, right? Anyway, do you think that because she is an adult, we will have a more difficult time tamping down some of these quirks? The one that we're dealing with now is that she will tear through the house from front windows to the houses back windows. She’s looking at birds fly up and away and she thinks that she will spot where they went from another window. Unfortunately, our windows are tall and start about 16” from the floor, easy for her to look through. We’ve tried closing off the bottom slats so that she can’t see while standing but she still goes from window to window. Please note that I have tried tying her leash to my belt loop to keep her by my side. She calmly walks along with me everywhere I go and loses interest in flying from window to window but as you can imagine, I can’t stay leashed to her all the time while I’m inside. Do you have any ideas what we can do to try and quell her desire to do this? Just so you know, we have played with her for hours in the back yard and when she comes into the house, she’s off and running.

I don't think there's anything you can do about the attachment. Mine blocks off doorways and is Always by my side ... Even though it can be annoying at times with having to ALWAYS watch she's so smart she knows the Exact spot she's allowed to lay in the kitchen without being underfoot...I joke and say she so far up my ass that I need an elephant suppository to get her out!! Lol but I wouldn't have it any other way. As for your bird issue... With Olivia it's Squirrels and it's hard to be mad about it because it gives her joy. Having a back as bad as mine I'm unable to play fetch and take very long walks etc So something so small that gives her so much happiness it's a small price for what she gives back

My 15 month old bc is not interested in chasing ball which is very surprising to other bc owners we meet on our walks. Is that normal?? Other bcs seems to be obsessed with this type of games.

My long-coated BCs didn't smell bad at all, though their feet did smell like potato chips. My red/white BC developed Old Dog Vestibular Disease 2x, but none of my other dogs did. Is thus genetic? One dog died of cancer and he was the only one; he loved his Kibbles&Bits-which has caramel colouring and supposed to be cancer-causing. I doubt if his owner knew this as his parents (Tess son and LittleBoPeep) who ate only Kirkland or Iams and didn't get cancer.

Thanks for this information! I was too late for your community post, but I do have a question. Are male border collies prone to dominance problems towards other males? I've got a male, castrated greyhound (a retired racer) and am on the waiting list for a border collie pup, but I'm still unsure if we should choose a specific gender. I know some breeds have a lot of problems with dominance if you get two males, but my boy is still very much affected by the smells of bitches in heat.

I haven't really had any male to male issues. I have 3 boys right now who all get along fine, 2 are neutered, one is still intact. Of course every individual dog is different and it also depends on your other dog. In the past I did have a neutered Aussie that reacted to my existing neutered male, but that could happen with a female too.

On this note. You know about my BC. He’s almost 4 and not neutered. I’ve had no issues with him. Is this a bad idea? My opinion is Why fix him when he ain’t broken? My real reason is that if I ever meet a great breeder who really is interested in helping breed the perfect dogs. Aeon is the dog. Yes, some vanity but he’s so smart.

@@michaellawrence6677 To me breeding is a huge responsibility. I've always thought that if I was willing to breed then I should also be willing to take back or deal with any "problem" pups. As for neutering, in the past I have always neutered. There is some new research about that though. I don't regret neutering my previous dogs and my first dog lived to be 17. But my youngest dog Raven will be left intact for awhile unless I find there is good reason to neuter him. If I do, I will see if chemical castration is a possibility here first since it isn't permanent. I have a non-breeding contract with him so he won't be bred.

Assuming you train a border collie properly from pup to adult...are these breeds capable of being left home alone for an 8-10 hour work day? Both my wife and I work from home currently, which is ideal in raising a collie pup. We don't know how long we'll have these kinds of opportunities though, and whether commuting will be in our future again. This is our biggest deterrent in selecting this wonderful breed. Outside of work we are very active.

No, Border Collies are not suitable for leaving for long hours alone. In my opinion no dogs are. However Border Collies are definitely not capable of been left alone for long hours. They will become destructive and stressed resulting in excessive barking and other behaviour that is unwanted.

I'm on my 2nd bc. The first was a mix but acted. More bc but sadly got hit by a car because she was very close to my lil MR BORN FREE. I searched for another and got my 2nd. I wasn't aware that I was going to Amish people. I'll never know what the man did but quickly learned she was VERY fearful of Men especially Men with beards. She's actually 1/2 pomsky but physically looks bc except for her legs are a bit shorter. To add to her anxiety a neighbors 110lb pitbull charged out his door and attacked her during a walk. I immediately went down trying to get the ex fighting dog off of her. I believe her massive amount of hair.... By the end my poor baby was covered with blood.... And coming out of her mouth. Thankfully. The blood all over her white bib was mostly mine and knocked a tooth a lil loose. It took the owner and another neighbor to throw their body weight to STOP CUJO on his mission to kill her. She's now 5 and sadly has never gotten past what happened but has improved.... Aside from her traumatic early life. She has been the most LOYAL PROTECTIVE over me that I've ever known. They say that owners are matched with their dogs and I'm disabled and she has bad knees so Long walks don't happen often but we go to every store with shopping carts (for me) and she loves it!! However she's weary of strangers and doesn't warm up to anyone quickly (except for mellow children) otherwise she LOVES stores but she can't be touched and will Bark at quick movements which she's overcome and she's seems to be VERY PROUD to protect her mommy and i know she understands the Never Ending compliments on her beauty. Overall aside from her barking (which does make me feel SAFE) She's the best near Perfect dog I've ever had. Her intelligence is astounding! But BCs Are Not for everyone! She's truly a 1 person dog the attachment we share is unimaginable! I had a heart attack a few months ago and my son stepped up while I was in the hospital... It was the FIRST time we've ever been apart since I adopted her at 12 weeks (shes now 5) the first day or so she sat at his back door Waiting and if outside she sat and Waited at the gate. He took pictures and we had a few video calls...lol she's never had any separation anxiety (i don't work) but I've told her since day 1 that Mommy ALWAYS comes back... My Son is only 1 of 2 men that she Loves and Trusts and it helped that there's allot of activity at his house between his 2 dogs and his family including my 3 yr old granddaughter whose very sweet and gentle with her that helped her to keep her mind off of me.... I stayed for 5 days and they would've liked me to stay a few more days or so but I Missed her So Much. Plus my son told me she barely slept and i didn't either. My first night home we Both Slept like a rock. Over all if you're looking for a EXTREMELY SMART dog but KNOW that you Must not have a problem with constant BRUSHING and if you intend to complain (then a BC ISN'T the dog for you) twice a year they Blow their coat ... So Brushing just IS! They are VERY VERY clean and neither has ever had any odor. It's ALSO forbidden to shave them! Their coat and my Olivia seems to have a double undercoat is said to help keep them cool in the summer and no doubt warm in the winter. It's also said that it'll grow back wrong and kinda crazy. My first BC i took to agility training which was so much fun. There aren't enough Good things i can say about them!!! But they do need to be taught boundaries and rules when puppies and you'll wind up with the BEST DOG EVER! I Love her so much Id take a bullet for her.... Hey I was Bitten during the attack and i know you aren't supposed to try and stop a dog fight I went into auto pilot mom (dog mom in this case mode) in return expect Loyalty beyond compare... She's never more than 6 ft away and the first dog I've had who insists on being in the bathroom while I shower. She took on the role of watching over me herself. I'll be having back surgery soon so it'll improve but I know she'll NEVER quit. I have learned to make peace with the fact that I'll outlive my fur babies but while I'm honored to have them I'll give them the best life that they deserve! Thanks for listening

My vet says my 2 year old border collie has ADHD. He just won't settle at all. Pants all the time, even during winter. Pants after play (understandable) but pants and bouncing off the walls every day. Heart is fine. I'm worried he could pick up on my sevre anxiety and my high heart rate? I got him originally to train as an assistant Dog. But he is never calm, I get too overwhelmed by him. I love him, he gets plenty of exercise, but vet suggested only 15 minutes free running. A lot of border collies are like this including one of my own. Boundary and crate games are good for teaching calm as well as nosework. Using a crate or xpen for quiet time and training “go to mat” or “go to boundary” can help a lot. Long lasting chews help too. All the best to you and to your special boy!

I wouldn't be concerned about mumbling and grumbling. Lots of dogs vocalize in different ways. Try to observe what is going on before the grumbling. He may be trying to tell you something.
