His goal in life to purge the planet mobius of wildlife and leave a grey polluted wasteland for him to rule over. The Chaos Emeralds are the only thing powerful enough to fuel his machine to poison the planet's wildlife Personality: cold, un-merciful, easy to shout at another, will hurt anyone to achieve his goal and doesn't matter if they die or not. This is why I love Eggman from the Archie Comics because the effects of his destruction are everlasting. The invasion in Archie Sonic by Robotnik caused civilizations to collapse, families to be torn apart, Mobians living in constant fear of his wrath and even having Eggbosses that act like warlords that control his conquered territory for him. And even if Sonic beats his latest plan, it doesn't matter because the world isn't anymore free than it was before. It's probably why I dislike IDW Sonic because of how it takes place after forces where Eggman has taken over the world and yet things just seem to go back to normal. Worst of all he isn't taken as a legitimate threat; his biggest plan so far was the Zombot virus and he gets sidelined half way through the arc by the Zeti. I know IDW is still young but we are almost at issue 50 and we have yet to see why not Starline, not Mimic, not the Zeti, but Eggman is the real villain of the series. But what I love the most about Eggman as a villain is the relationship between Eggman and Sonic. In IDW their rivalry is that of reacting to a roach; something that just annoys them and will not go away. But in Archie it was very personal as they saw each other as the vain of their existence. For Eggman he saw Sonic as an attack to his intelligence, as he despite being the smartest man there is can never account for Sonic who always ruins his plans, and for Sonic he sees Eggman as the man who took everything away, he lost his parents when he was a baby, lost his home during the invasion, spent his childhood in hiding, losing many friends on the quest to save the world and all because of the desires of a selfish man.

The contrast between Eggman and Sonic is brilliant, Sonic represent freedom, for everyone and himself, while Eggman represent order, to everyone and for himself only. Both of their ideology clash because their resolves to achieve their goal both always causes them to butt heads. It also stands to reason that both Sonic and Eggman balance each other out, if the world has too much freedom, Eggman takes his opportunity and put in order, HIS order, and if that stays for too long, someone (Sonic) will eventually rise up to give freedom back to the world.

@@hightetrisbeatboxrevived1648 "Depth" has nothing to do with it; it's a theme. Any kind of passable media uses broad themes to keep their ideas coherent and easily understood, even at a glance. The simpler the narrative, the broader and more easily recognized themes are used. The fact that Sonic uses a universal concept like order verses freedom is a consequence of it being a game for children that needs to be super obvious about everything so you can remember it. The wonderful thing about Eggman is how flexible he is as a video game villain. His abilities set a common occurring theme with enemies within stages, that being his robots and the freedom of engineering means that the doctor can manipulate his weapons in any way he chooses. The tone and amount of industrialization in the stages can reflect Robotnik’s progress and evolution. By this standard, Eggman can easily be a reoccurrence in the games for the series. An issue along with what was mentioned in the video was that these features feel poorly utilized in meta era games. This is more of a direct result of Sega’s “play it safe/simplistic” attitude, but it canonically portrays a doctor that makes the mistake of using the same plans while hoping for different results. Robotnik is one of my favorite villain characters and I want to see his writing improve.

The Egg Dragoon is probably my favourite Eggman encounter and the peak of Mike Pollock's Eggman (don't get me wrong, I still love him to death and am glad he's still voicing the character. This is just way too hard to top). His voice really shows off hoe much anger and destain Eggman has in this moment and how he's stopping Sonic once and for all if it's the last thing he does. With context to the story, Eggman was supposed to win. He got the jump on Sonic. He drained the Emeralds. He launched Sonic into space careening towards his doom. He should've won.....but he didn't. Sonic somehow survived and has slowly been reawakening the power of the Emeralds, putting the world back together and thwarting his plans. Victory was basically in his grasp but that spiny blue pincushion somehow came back and started ruining everything, just like he always does. This come to a head in the Egg Dragoon fight where instead of sending the rat off and hoping he perishes, he'll personally makes sure that Sonic never sees the light of day again. Eggy busts out probably the coolest mech he's ever made with the sheer intent of stopping this assinine back and fourth they've been doing for all these years. Every single threat Eggman gives doesn't seem like his usual "I'll destroy you" act. It feels like there is meaning behind these words. Eggman, in this moment wants Sonic's head on his wall and will do anything to get it. What makes this even better is that there's a time limit. The amount of ground you're fighting on is finite and if you run out, you fall off into the Earth's core and it's game over. Let's not forget about the hedgehog himself though, he's great to. He goes absolutely feral on the Dragoon because he doesn't have much of a choice. He's on time limit and is sure Eggman isn't messing around this time. So he use everything he's learned from the Werehog form and goes to town on the doctor before it's too late. And the music *chef's kiss* perfection. It displays both sides desperation and anger in this moment perfectly, especially Eggman. The gloves are off, the chips are down. No more petty insults or comedic banter. This is serious. Both sides give off the feeling that they're scared of one another but are too stubborn to back down and will fight to the bitter end, showing why they truly are meant for each other......to fight that is.

When you talked about Eggman's desperation, it really hit me why I felt he was so threatening in the adventure games. And I'm not even talking about THAT scene in Adventure 2 that you mentioned. During the final Fight in SA1, in sonic's story, (which to be fair was included footage of in the video), I remember how scary he was. Paired with the menacing music, I remember how when you deal your last hit, the whole place begins to shake, with sirens blaring. Eggman's machine is already beginning to blow up, but rather than just going down, or escaping as quick as possible, Eggman instead thrashes the machine around, and tries to hit sonic with it in last desperate attempt to kill him, almost destroying all of the platforms in the process. Or in Tails' story, where Eggman already lost. His Egg Carrier is down, he has no idea where Chaos or the Emeralds are, so he lost. So then he decides to NUKE THE WHOLE FRICKIN CITY. Luckily, it was a dud, but to save Station Square Tails has to race against Eggman to the rocket to deactivate it. And when he does that, Eggman is done, and beings out the big guns. He doesn't care about damage or casualties, obviously, so he brings out a big machine (Egg Walker) in the middle of Station square, throwing bombs everywhere. And the way he threatens Tails before that was just chilling... So yeah, I think the Eggman encounters are at their best when he is desperate. When the whole place is collapsing, and his machine is already beaten down, but he still puts up a fight

The ending made me see how much of a PERFECT villain Eggman is to Sonic: both stubborn, both insistent, both powerful and with big egos. They are two sides of the same coin personality-wise and that is incredible. Eggman is a perfect foil to Sonic, making him shine brighter in every way: as many missiles he may throw, as many robots and machines he may create and as many times he may bolster his ego, he will never beat the blue blur. Thank you for making me see that. Another reason to L O V E Eggman

I LOVED Dr.Eggman in SA2 the absoloute most... He wasn't as goofy as he was the game before it. But this time it felt different. He still had some of his goof BUT it wasn't a game anymore to him. He wanted to finally achieve something great and not only that live up to the legacy of his grandfather and in the end come to think his grandfather even went too far. He had an actual character arc where we got to see more than two aspects of the character. I know that kind Eggman is probably one to go home and give it up after SA2 but man I miss that, I miss having it ALL.

SA2 just has such a good pace that's set with Eggman, really makes you feel like the reason why Sonic is needed so desperately is because Eggman moves his plans so fast the only thing that can keep up is the fastest thing alive. Eggman is the very definition of guerrilla warfare hitting you at all times while also working off plans that would need an entire generation to figure and sort, he is such an all hitter that there is no combatting him with things like GUN all you can do is go directly into his traps and be confident enough that you have what it takes to avoid them.

I always appreciate the stakes of the Classic and Dreamcast Era games giving Eggman a proper, threatening presence. He enslaves animals in robots, burned down an island and tricked a powerful rival onto his side in Sonic 3, worked to make and raise a monster that would destroy the city in Adventure, came from a legacy of world-destroying power in Adventure 2, and responsible for creating Metal Sonic, a robot that was playing all four teams like a fiddle. Mediocre and/or bad games in the series are always the ones that diminish this dynamic between Sonic and Eggman through a few flaws in the Modern era that I don't need to list.

I think the pre-adventure games got Eggman's comedy the best. While other games nailed different aspects even better, Eggman's comedy was best done in his reactions/expression, every time you hit Eggman, it's hard not to smile a little when you see him give a moment of "ohhhhh shit..." and go back to what he's doing. If it can be done by any other character, it's not good Eggman comedy and belittles him, give it to a robot instead. Secondly his style is also inherently funny, you can't tell me that seeing yet another motobug where a true war machine should be isn't funny. Seeing his stupid face plastered on everything he makes is hilarious, imagine being in a war and finding out your rifle was designed and manufactured in the Eggman Empire by seeing his face engraved into the handle. He's not even actually there but just seeing his stupid face on the battlefield out of place is hilarious.

I especially loved him laughing at the camera every time he hits you in the classic bosses. He was really well done comedy wise in the Adventure games too, the scene in SA2 where he just scratches his ass makes me laugh every time, yet he is amazing and super badass in that game. The series used to hit a perfect balance between moods, SA2 could be funny and lighthearted in a really charming way then flip to being serious and kind of tragic whenever it wanted and it basically always worked, the Last Story cutscene is a great example of this. Now they are incapable of doing either.

It's pretty hard to take an overweight, bald dude with a strange moustache weird getup seriously. But why it works is because he's a massive threat. He's an unpredictable genius who's: -Blown up a large piece of the moon -Chained an entire planet to mechanize it -Gained control of multiple different planets in order to enslave tiny alien creatures and suck them of their power source -Broke the world into pieces -And erased time and space All of these things with a grandiose, shove it in your face nature that I love. Eggman doesn't need to look threatening. That's not how he makes his presence known. His actions are what makes him a threat. As long as his big brain can think of it and make a plan around it, he's near unstoppable and wants everyone to know that while he laughs straight in their faces.

Eggman is by-far my favorite character in the series, mostly because of his vibe of "having the control" even if he isn't at control (remember the final scene of both eggmans on Sonic Generations). And as a fan of him, I would love to see him more threatening in Sonic Frontiers.

Sonic and Eggman are almost complete opposites: one is good, the other is evil; one is a nature supporter, the other is an industrialist; one has an army of mutual friends, the other dominates over subordinates. But there is one key similarity that connects the two. They both plan on completing they're mission having as much fun as possible.

I love that you addressed the duality of his portrayals, both threatening and comedic, it felt like the perfect rebuttal to another video I saw that posed the comedic side as the inherently worse part of his portayal, when in reality, it all works when you see what he's capable of and they work hand in hand for his character and add to his appeal.

I think the original source of the whole "theme park" runnig gag was a scrapped idea for a live action Sonic movie; it was supposed to be the first half of the story to "Sonic Xtreme", and had Dr. Eggman use the theme park idea in a sinister, evil way - roboticizing the patron while they're in the park. Along the way, however, we all lost sight of the original purpose...

That ending perfectly nails what the Joker said to Batman in the The Dark Knight "You just couldn't let me go, could you? This is what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. You truly are incorruptible, aren't you, huh? You won't kill me out of some misplaced sense of self-righteousness, and I won't kill you because you're just too much fun. I think you and I are destined to do this forever." I'd say that Flynn's era of Archie Sonic nailed this perfectly and its exhibited in full display during the Iron Dominion saga. Sonic has won and despite having the perfect opportunity he chooses not off Eggman, instead capturing and locking him up and the moment Eggy has regained his self Sonic is ready to treat it as their usual game of back and forth. Eggman could nuke the kingdom off the map and be done with it but he wants to break Sonic because he doesn't want an empty W. These two truly are driven by their ego and it makes an entertaining timeless back to forth.

Especially since his lab coat isn’t the generic lab coat, it’s the ring master’s coat mixed with a lab coat. It’s the uniform of a genius circus ring master, it’s such a unique and genius design choice since it plays so naturally into him, of course he always gets bested in a humiliating and funny way since it’s part of the show, intentional or not. You highlighted one of many reasons why Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the best game in the entire franchise. Robotnik does not quit. He is absolutely hell bent on keeping the Master Emerald for himself, even it means dying and taking you with him. The stakes, the mind boggling epic proportions and Robotnik's sheer maniacal stubbornness, are all portrayed so well in the final moments of the game... All of it without a single line of dialogue. Absolutely zero exposition. Visual storytelling at its finest. Illustrated in simple, now seemingly outdated, 16-bit graphics. This is why the original Genesis games, especially S3&K are so special. It's what is lost in every game since Sonic Adventure, sans Sonic Mania.

Eggman imo needs some slight tweaking. I think game that does the threat of eggman justice, is colors. For example at the beginning of the game in tropical resort it’s an innocent theme park in outer space, but as you progress especially into starlight carnival you see a fleet of starships coming through a portal and at first you think oh it’s some spectacle for the visitors but when you realize the size and amount of ships you come to the conclusion he could conquer a planet with these, and then planet wisp the final safe haven for the little aliens, starts with a lush and beautiful landscape that transitions into a factory pumping chemicals into the water, it emulates the show don’t tell story telling of the classics that while eggman can fake an innocent park builder the real robotnik while goofy and carasmatic is a cold calculating mad man that will pursue his goals until at any cost.

I keep coming back to this video over and over again. The editing has been praised by many other commenters, which is thoroughly deserved, but I want to talk about the combination of comedy and theatrics. The way this video is presented is a mirror of Eggman himself: making the audience laugh while also making us go "holy shit" at the same time. It perfectly emphasizes the point this video is making, and is probably the reason why this remains one of my favorite videos of all time.

I've found that recent ones have just been trashing on the story of everything colors and after and praising the Adventure games instead of staying neutral, whilst this video takes the upsides of all games whilst also pointing the downsides to how characters are written in ALL Sonic games. Plus the editing is top notch, egg/10.

I love the way you explained exactly how Eggman should be when it comes to being a force to be reckoned with, he may be a goofy ass character, but he’s more than just a villain who has all the comedic qualities to himself, but his true colors show that he is this dark and dangerous man who causes carnage to the universe, he will do whatever it takes to destroy Sonic and anyone else who gets in his way, failure by failure he would always keep his ass back up and keep pushing forward to finally see his enemies fall, suffer, and die the worst death imaginable. That’s what I want more of when there is a new Sonic game, I want to see his true SA1/SA2 self shine through again and create oblivion towards the blue spine cushion, hell, his own theme song in SA2 tells you exactly what kind of a person he is, a man with no limits, someone who will eventually succeed! I love how he just shows so much hatred for Sonic and how he’s sick and tired of him getting in his way.

"ATTENTION CITIZENS OF WINDMILL VILLAGE- IT IS I, YOUR BELOVED MR. TINKER. ...you all took such good care of me and as the old saying goes... no good deed goes unpunished." This was Eggman's message to a small sleepy village that chose to believe in him and protect him after a fit of amnesia in IDW. If this speech does not perfectly display the humor and evil Eggman has I really have no idea what does. He also has a bunch of fun hammy quotes that I feel don't diminish the global scale destruction he continues to pervade that chapter.

I wouldn't mind the frenemy status of Eggman, but I'd like it to be earned, gained through story where he does learn to appreciate his new "friends" even if he'd never admit it. I also see this frenemy of Eggman still being a threat and not entirely learning from his old habits, cause his ego would never let him stop trying to take over the world. Some of the alternate comic stories and older animated shorts and films kinda explored this but never fully embrace or earn it. Also the idea of Eggman in the middle of a legit threatening scheme only to get caught mid planning by one of the heroes stopping by to check on him with a hand in the cookie jar style gag I find personally amusing lol

The contrast between his looks/humor and how goddamn threatening he is is so crucial to Eggman's character. Unexpectedness makes a character more engaging. I've heard him described as an Inverse Bowser: while Bowser looks terrifying and has lofty goals, he's ultimately a softie with a crush on Peach who loves his kids and plays golf, tennis, etc. with the heroes. Meanwhile, Eggman's the opposite: his humor and goofy design make his competence and ruthless nature unexpected. Pushing the balance too far in EITHER direction makes him lose so much impact.

I love this video (just like all of your other content, lol) and I enjoyed how you touched on the fact that Sonic and Eggman DO share many “general traits” (stubborn, witty, cocky to a fault in certain situations) and views of their own efforts (Sonic of course would help someone in need/he likes seeing people happy, Eggman revealed recently in IDW that the real reason why he’s so obsessed with amusement parks is because he wants to see people happy + some other spoiler-y things). I really feel like their dynamic specifically might be my fav in the whole franchise and it’s def a much more nuanced one compared to other heroes and villains of the genre. There’s a specific interaction they have in Sonic X (the original Japanese version haha) that I always go back to because it’s so….casual? Like it’s just them and they really aren’t fighting, but Eggman just kind of “emotionally confronts” Sonic. I feel like Eggman knows that he understands Sonic on a deeper level and that they are (for lack of a better phrase) the same person, just in a different font.
