I’m in San Jose ca and I always see people running on the trail when I go hiking . It all makes sense now , I’m going to try it out myself !

I go out to Denver every year to ride with my buddy, that’s altitude!

I have Polycythaemia which means I have a natural Hematocrit level of 58%. I still train at altitude at home because I know the benefits of this. It’s def worth the effort. You only need to train at 2700 metres. You won’t get sick at this altitide(shouldn’t). Part of the issue is your leg power always lags behind your cardio fitness. Live and train at altitude but do your high output workouts at sea level.

I don't train at altitude because I forget to breathe half the time while riding anyways, dig me a grave on that moutain if I go. Also was wondering why Canyon didn't send them some Ultimates to go up the mountains, but then realized I was on a triathlon channel 😆 ..guess they gotta train with those TT bars to keep form optimal.

Enjoyed this but couldn’t help think why not a pre altitude blood test and performance test and post altitude results. 😊

Please excuse the probably stupid question but when you said hypoxic training I immediately thought swimming. Do you get an aerobic benefit across all three sports from doing a lot of swimming off very reduced breathing? How much of this kind of training would you do to see a benefit? James mentioned it in passing in a recent video. I’m not suggesting it replicates altitude but if that’s not an option for you would this help?

HYPOXIC TRAINING (Post 3 of 3)... Benefits of hypoxic training! The effects of breath-holding can simulate the same benefits of altitude trainining. Research by Balestra (2006) in the Journal of Human Kinetics states that during a strong breath-hold as blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) starts to decrease (80-87% SpO2 equivalent to being at 4-5,000m altitude) the kidneys are stimulated to produce more EPO. This increased production natural of EPO triggers the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells and hence increase the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. The same effect sort after with altitude training. Breath-holds performed after a normal exhale, as per the @oxygenadvantage techniques, creates a hypoxic (low oxygen), hypercapnic (high carbon dioxide) affect that causes adaptations within the body that enhance sporting performances by; 1. Spleen contractions to immediately release addition red blood cells for increase in oxygen carrying capacity of the blood (short term effect). 2. Stimulate natural production of EPO which results in increased red blood cell count with a 3-4 day delay from the performed breath-holds (long term - altitude training effects). 3. Increase in carbon dioxide tolerance from increased exposure to hypercapnic environment. 4. Increase in lactate acid threshold, VO2 max and time to fatigue due to enhanced buffering capacity effect from H+ ions created during hypercapnic environment. *Balestra et al.(2006). EPO stimulates proliferation and maturation of bone marrow’s red blood cells. Journal of Human Kinetics volume 32/2012, 197-210.

This type of things make triathlon look a very elitist sport. Training in exotic location with expensive bike... Not something I can relate to.

If you're from Britain, Southern Europe is a very affordable holiday: a flight is only a couple hundred dollars and B&Bs aren't expensive.

@@wilfdarr Thanks, that's exactly what I was talking about. Too elitist.

@@3WalkingPoles Altitude training is not exclusive to triathletes. Cyclists, runners, swimmers, and other endurance athletes benefit from it, as well. It's also definitely not a must. As with most sports, there's cheaper options and then there's more expensive options. I'll be hesitant to spend money on altitude training but certainly appreciate GTN's effort in sharing the benefits of it.
