I live in Colorado, elevation of 5,280 ft and spend a lot of time hiking at 10,000+ feet. So, I am very familiar with the effects of altitude training. The huge win for me with these masks, is that it forces me to pay attention to my breathing while under exertion. Just learning to breath more efficiently has had a massive change in my performance. When I use my mask regularly, I notice a dramatic improvement in my hiking ability and how long I can sustain exertion. All said, in my opinion and personal experience, while they don't literally do what is claimed. The results often create the desired effect. Great video!

If your run is recovery you shouldn’t really feel like you’re breathing too much and your HR should remain relatively low. Great. As a pulmonologist and triathlete, I’ve thought through this a fair amount when planning for a race at 7000ft(2100m). I have mountains close by and could train at that elevation, but live at the base at about 1000m. Because of the way and time required of exposure to hypoxia, one would not anticipate any significant improvement in altitude acclimation from training high and living low. As you mentioned, the opposite is true. If these masks did decrease the oxygen content, one would also not expect altitude acclimation benefits as you would not have the same stimulus at other times.

You mentioned oxygen in the air, and how the mask only gets less air to your lungs. That is the same thing that happens with altitude. At sea level or the top of a mountain the percentage of oxygen in the air is still 20.9%. At elevation the air pressure is less, and therefore the partial pressure of oxygen is less, which is what makes it harder for oxygen to diffuse get into your blood.
@Kamicassie4 жыл бұрын
I believe the difference is based on the volume. Persentage wise when comparing oxygen at sea level vs at altitude both might make up 20.9%. But at altitude the density of air is lower than at sea level (1.225 kg/m3). This would then in turn mean that per breath you are taking in the same volume of air but the amount of air is less at altitude. The mask however reduces the volume of air that you take in due to the added resistance and your lungs and other muscles working harder for less volume of air
@markthrelfall35774 жыл бұрын
Cassie has beaten me too it. Yep the difference is the volume of air you breathe in remains the same whether you’re at altitude or sea level, but the oxygen content of that air differs
@pokekraze3394 жыл бұрын
@@markthrelfall3577 Thanks for the reply, Mark. To me, saying "less" oxygen in the air is misleading. The composition of air is the exact same at sea level and at altitude, but the atmospheric pressure is lower at altitude, meaning the partial pressure of oxygen is lower and hemoglobin won't become saturated. Also, you stated that altitude chambers pump oxygen out of the air, which implies that they are not pumping out nitrogen, carbon dioxide or any other components of the air. Altitude chambers pump normal air out of the room which lowers the air pressure and thus lowers the partial pressure of oxygen.
@markthrelfall35774 жыл бұрын
@@pokekraze339 Of course you are correct, but imagine saying that to all our viewers that haven't studied this. It becomes very long winded, and overwhelming. I think it's fairly obvious that it's not just the oxygen content that differs, but we're focussing on that purely from a hemoglobin and fuelling of muscles stand point. It's also how most literature explain and refer to it. So, this is in no way misleading, but of course I could dig far deeper...but then risk the video becoming incredibly dull!

I know it's been a year, but breathe through your nose. Even when the intensity is up, PREFERABLY you want to maintain a, 4/6 sec inhale, 1 sec pause, 6/8 sec exhale. Where your nose hair is barely moving, that's how less the exhale and inhale is supposed to be, but it's hard to keep that up at higher intensity. There's videos about this on this site. I bike 3 days a week, where 80% of the time I'm biking uphill, I used to breathe through my mouth because it felt right. Saw vids about this and started breathing through nose. First session was really hard, you have to fight your habit, and also it feels you are always out of air. BUT, after the exercise, my body felt better also less tired in general. I also recover very fast in terms of my breathing when doing it through my nose. Normally I would be beat. Don't quote me on what's I'm saying next, these are things I kinda recall from the videos. But breathing through mouth we traditionally used for survival, high stake situations, where there's a predator or we are going for a prey and our instinct kicks in and we breathe through our mouth to take in as much oxygen as possible. while that sounds good, we actually need a set amount of carbon dioxide for our muscles/body to absorb the oxygen. What happens when we do cardio and breathing through mouth is we overload our supply, and our muscle isn't actually taking as much as it should. I'd encourage you to search this up yourself though, like I said these are just things I barely recall. But from experience, it is effective. Can't quite do it on weightlifting though, what I'll do is inbetween sets I'll breathe through nose instead. This makes sense for me since like our instinct says, we may want to overload the oxygen when we need strength instead of cardio but maybe breathing through nose is more effective on that as well I'm just not used to it.

BLUF, it's not analogous to being at high altitude. It has a training benefit of forcing your diaphragm to work harder. It cannot replicate the expansion of the air molecules at high altitude which would trigger the increased production of red blood cells. Getting less air is not the same as getting air that delivers less on a physiological level. You may see cardiorespiratory improvements with training, but this will have nothing to do with hypoxic effects. It is not a sufficient substitute for altitude training and will not directly impact your VO2 max as quickly or significantly as actual altitude training, if at all.

No. It does not. Masks simply increase resistance of breathing. It causes lungs to work harder. High altitude completely changes physiological processes within the body due to atmospheric pressure changes. Differences in pressure result in circulatory changes within the circulatory system and organs/tissues within the body. When someone gets injured, doctors put them in a compression chamber to force more oxygen into tissues and accelerate healing. If a mask worked, they'd just keep a steady flow of O2 flowing through their mask/ventilator. This is just a fitness fad.

The purpose of the mask is to make breathing harder. Lung workout.

A full lung of Air with half the O2 in or a half a lung of air with all. Available O2 I. Don't see the difference. Hopefully a peer reviewed triple blind study will be done soon
@mnbv5555cxz4 жыл бұрын
the difference is at altitude there is much lower partial pressure of O2. This will alter the way red blood cells can grab it and transport. half a lung full of sea level air will still release O2 to blood more easily (I think...)

Came here just to say NO, they do not. Altitude has more effect on your body vs simply reducing oxygen in the air. As an asthma sufferer, it's bananas that somebody would willingly restrict their breathing (which is all these do) - cos I can tell you there's no benefit! All it does is hinder you from doing your specified intensity.

Do you think nasal breathing would induce similar effects? Why spend money on a mask if there's a more natural way)

If you wore this all day except when training for say 6 months. Will that have a positive effect on your red blood cell count?

Well there was a little more to it than that. But yes, in summary, "no they don't" :) But the debates are interesting, and the idea of RMT. Unless of course you knew all of that already

Well, every time you breathe out, the mask is full of “used” air, so next time you breathe in some of your intake will be this used air, so your oxygen intake levels will probably be lower, plus you will be working out your breathing muscles, as the mask makes it harder. I’m no doctor, but this seems to have positive effects if used correctly. This needs to be researched though. I have this mask, and it definitely makes training harder, but I used it when I was training for anaerobic sports (all in 5 min runs & mma), and was a complete noob in aerobic&cardio departments. When I got into running I realized my cardio is very bad, I got very high pulse at very low paces, My hr goes up very fast, but I can tolerate 90%+ max hr for periods well above average. Now I know that’s neither healthy nor efficient endurance training. It still interesting how 90%+ effort training made running slow harder for me.
