That's subjective . You don't need to be the best singer to be a great frontman. David had attitude in his singing and it made VH raw and great. Sammy was too polished. More pop than rock. I love Sammy and despise David, but i always prefer David with VH. At his peak, NOBODY was a better frontman than David.

I'll take Sammy any day over David. Better singer by far, and a better person from anyone who talks about knowing each. Eddie chose the direction of the music, so blame him if anyone thinks it got fluffy. Eddie and Alex are typical rock stars.....you only matter to them when it's beneficial.

@@sashlipinski7034what I have said before & slush24 is correct, is that musical opinions are subjective (redundant I guess). VH’s music became more melodic & sophisticated with Sammy. Sammy definitely has more vocal range. The other thing that Dave seems to get a pass on musically, and to me not desirable, some of his solo work was schmaltzy, Vaudeville, self centered & cringeworthy. That was Dave’s musical direction towards the end of VH. Dave liked to cover tunes that were already major hits & play the role of an irresistible sex god. His songs were, hey look at me. Just a Gigolo, California Girls & Tobacco Road to name a few. Let’s remember that the gorgeous women in his videos were paid. My point being that they were there to do a job, not because Dave was an irresistible stud. Eddie was a great guitarist, & musician that loved to compose. I think it was Dave’s idea for VH to do covers of the Kinks, Roy Orbison, The Beach Boys, Linda Ronstadt & others. Eddie wanted to grow creatively & to continue to write his own music.

It's interesting how Alex says in his recent interview that the original Van Halen lineup was the "real" Van Halen. However, in 1986, Alex then proclaimed that "Van Hagar" was the "real" Van Halen. So which is it? Maybe it's the "Best of Both Worlds"!

Sammy served a purpose, for the music to evolve, but it wasn't the same live, not even close. You can't compare the Sammy era to the first couple of albums, and I love all eras. Sammy joined when Van Halen was one of the biggest bands in the world and the reality is in 1986 it was all about Eddie. Ed made great music in all the eras, but nothing matches the monster they were from 1978 - 1984

In addition to being a great singer, Sammy Hager comes across as one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. (Mike Anthony too) The Van Halen Brothers long had a reputation for being very difficult to work with. They even fought with each other. Alex beat up Ed back stage a few times. There is a video series called 'The Tapes Archive' and on that channel they do some DEEP dives into the inner workings of Van Halen's early years. There is an interview on that channel with DLR and in that interview, he confirms many of his insecurities about his position in VH. DLR never liked how he got into VH, he sort of 'back door'd' his way into the band and he knew that Eddie was the real lynch pin and he also knew that Eddie was SICK of Roth's crappy ideas about doing covers of old dance songs and he also knew that Eddie was sick of DLR and Ted Templman pairing up and pressuring him in the studio to create music that he didn't like. DLR was planning his exit as soon as Eddie began building 5150, he saw it for what it was, Eddie wrestling control back away from Templeman and Roth. Roth also knew that discussions had taken place early on about replacing Roth with Sammy Hagar. Roth wanted a situation that HE controlled and he had Billy Sheehan and Steve Via working up music in a warehouse on the other side of LA and it was all on the DL. Roth used 1984 to promote his OWN star, making sure he was featured in ALL the video's and the 'big cheese', so when he dumped VH, he'd scalp tons of their fans. The truth is, Alex is bitter and being petty about all of this. He hated that it was his crappy decisions that got Hagar fired and that it was his crappy advice that led to the crumbling of the band. It was his humiliating idea to do a 'reunion tour' and to treat Michael Anthony like garbage. What a sad way to go out.

I'm of two minds on this subject. First off I can understand a book that is going to about a band of kids getting together, slugging it out on the club circuit in the mid 1970s, paid virtually nothing and doing it with no more than a Pie in the Sky dream of making it BIG one day. The band's rise to popularity in Southern California, a record deal finally made and then the stories of working to keep an early lit flame alive as a new band in a supporting role, opening for bands that were "Rock Heroes" to a group of young guys. Then the band is head lining and on it's way to becoming what could easily be argued as the most significant Hard Rock band of that time with that last David Lee Roth record "1984". The break up story and how finding Sammy Hagar, almost by chance, is a whole other chapter in the Van Halen story. Very different story and band. The struggle was never there for Van Hagar. 5150 was incredibly well received and I'd argue the band was PERFECTION with the vocal prowess of Sam and Mike along side Eddie's amazing riffs, solos and super creative song writing in general. The book could have covered EVERYTHING.......but in doing so Alex would also have had to write a lot more about the ugly stuff too. As Sammy often says in interviews, "the band had 11 amazing years from '85-'96". The story didn't end in 1996 but there really was a long period after that I'm betting Alex figured he really didn't want to reveal any more of than is already out there. The split with Dave, after the release of 1984, scared and pissed off Eddie and Alex for their future as a band. Both have talked about this in interviews. Sammy coming into the picture saved the day and as result any problems with Dave at the time have had no lasting impact that made writing about the Dave era too hard to write about. You really can't same of the split with Sammy Hagar. If Alex had chosen to include this time period of time as well, a lot of pretty ugly stuff concerning the total screwing over of Mike Anthony would have been impossible to omit. The other glaring problem. Dave was THE ENEMY in 1985 but success with Sammy in the band allowed Ed and Alex to get past it quickly. Van Halen wasn't nearly so blessed with Success after spitting with Sammy Hagar. We've all seen the ugly interviews and comments. Alex and Eddie never got past the break with Sam. I'm betting the difference is found in everything from drug addiction to a complete lack of any success that came close to the 1978-96 run the band had. They say, "time heals all wounds" but in Van Halen's case it's more of a "time + success" heals wounds inflicted in break ups. In this thought I find my most likely explanation for how Alex can easily write about the Dave era and yet he couldn't write about the Sammy Hagar era.

They did and it was poorly received. I think by 1986 DLR was well past his ability to write new material. 10 years later by 1996 EVH and SH were both in the same boat. The band was poorly managed at times and people within the band (the VH bros) failed to maintain stable working relationships with their peers thus resulting in the revolving door of singers they had. Sorry guys but the common denominator as to why people could get along was the Eddie and Alex. It’s a different kind of truth but it’s the truth. What made the band was the ability to come together and create that spark doesn’t matter what era it was the band was stronger together than it was apart and they all couldn’t see that at the time. That’s the benefit we have now of hindsight.

However, if one were to avoid history and not talk about either era is completely wrong. Clearly, Alex talks out both sides of his mouth in this regard when you look at the historical video interviews. Hey, if there's a part 2 book about the Hagar days - great! However, I would not hold my breath. I guess you would go read Sammy's book.

I did not watch all of this. But keep in mind both of these guys are in their 70s, their prefontal cortex is not guiding their social skills as it once had. Alex I think is doing better, while Sammy is stuck on feeling he needs recognition and more kudos. And he has lost the ability to hold back his egotism. Sammy needed to let this go years ago, and certainly now it is time to stop, leave his ego at the door, acknowledge the Roth years were special. His years with band offer something, but it is different, as Alex says.

What's the name of the album that Wolfgang played on (a simple truth)? or something like that I loved everything Van Halen ever did even with the stuff with Charon I liked a lot of it, but that album they did the first album with Dave and Wolfgang together I don't like, I don't enjoy it. two songs on it are cool tattoo and she's a she's a woman, the rest of it's terrible of course the music is great the drumming the bass and the guitar is always awesome but the songs I don't like them I don't I don't feel it.

Dave was the raw unfiltered VH singer that was what a frontman should be. Sammy was the fine-tuned pop rock guy that came later. Who held up better? Sammy hands down. Who's a better singer? Sammy is. I prefer David with VH though. I like his voice with those older gut punch rock anthems in early VH. I was at the filming of Live Without a Net.... Both nights. It was ok. Nothing great.

Eddie was a fantastic, innovative guitarist. Van Halen music from both era's was great. All this shit talking and ego bashing some 30-40 years later? Who care's? All you're doing is tarnishing the legacy of a great band.

Well, he was right about it being not the same as the Roth era. But it certainly wasn't any less. And putting Hagar aside for a second, you guys really sh*t all over Mike Anthony for what appears on the outside to be no good reason whatsoever, so that's something that would bear explaining someday...or maybe the explanation is that you simply weren't good people. Still, as someone very wisely pointed out, all of your drama is meaningless ... we got the music to enjoy, all 3 eras, and thats what counts anyway.

Alex can feel how he likes about things. It wasn’t a snub to Sam in my opinion. And as much as I like Sam… He is the one that decided to stir up stink in his own book. And I enjoyed his book. I enjoyed Roth’s book as well. Can’t wait to read Alex’s book. The other books from Noel Monk.. and.. I can’t remember the other authors name… were great books as well. There’s a lot of inner workings in a band. Especially one as huge as the mighty Van Halen. I kinda do wish that Sam had waited a few more years to drop his book tho. He obviously needed just a little more time to properly heal. I guess it doesn’t matter now. This is where we are. Where things are. Not where we would like things to be. But it’s the reality of it nonetheless. The music will live on. Just don’t tarnish it further with useless fighting and blaming. Wolf is the continuation that Ed wanted. Not tributes and multiple guitarists. And it’s sounding really great so far. Can’t wait for the third Mammoth WVH record.

I agree Alex that band was amazing did anybody check out the demo tape yet? Called ZERO. Check out the demo version of House of Pain. Modern metal light years ahead of its time. The fast forward to the '80s with the cradle will rock,.. They were probably the best classic rock band that ever existed.

Van Halen songs Suck !!! --- They wrote "CLOWN" lyrics. --- That's why 1990's music blew them away. I was working backstage at a concert at the Nassau Coliseum 1990/91. The person in charge of all operations said to me - "Very soon you will see that these BIG band concerts will be a thing of the past". "We just had Van-Halen in here and they couldn't fill this place past half". - Well, the man was right. What happened just very soon after? - That's right - MTV Unplugged. A nice small quiet intimate setting. EVH never needed a singer. He should have took a page out of Les Paul's script and played a nice small quaint venue in L.A. or New York and demonstrated his skill and invited some musicians up to jam. Hey, I would have bought a ticket for that!!!

Alex is not getting any attention now that his brother is dead so he hast to stir attention up by saying ludicrously nonsensical crap here’s a guy it had to have ours an hours of practice to accomplish anything and how many overdubs will never know and now he wants to rag on Sammy and Michael, Anthony Talon, and their little fingers. Let’s face it if you get a drum machine today it’ll have more personality than Alex.
