If you're not already familiar with the Altra Lone Peak, It is the number one selling shoe from Altra for road and trail. The Lone peak is sort of the gateway drug for many people who have never worn an Altra before because it is so versatile and well built.
It was designed to be a moderate cushion trail shoe that could handle a wide variety of terrain from the smooth buffed out trails of northern California to the rooty, rugged hills of the Appalachian trail out here on the east coast. Even though this shoe hasn’t changed radically over the years, Altra has paid really close attention to the important details that make for a comfortable and fun trail running shoe.
Just like all of the other offerings from Altra, the lone peak has their signature Foot shaped toe box and Zero-drop balanced Cushioning system. I find the Foot shaped toe box particularly helpful for trail running because it allows my toes to splay out and help stabilize my body when I’m running across variable surfaces. The Lone Peak’s midsole is now made of Altra Ego Foam which has a nice responsive quality to it. This is the same foam that you would find on the road side in the Escalante or the new Rivera. The MaxTrac outsole has relatively aggressive lugs that are more than enough to handle most any terrain that I've ever encountered on a trail run. With a stack height of 25mm the shoe definitely offers quite a bit of cushioning and separation from the surface you are running on but doesn’t make me feel off balance or at risk of rolling an ankle when I'm running over roots and around corners.
The new model of the Lonepeak has a couple of subtle changes from last year's model but maintains the fit and feel of the previous models. The most significant change to the shoe for 2021 is the addition of the Ego Foam midsole because it gives the shoe a much more poppy, responsive characteristic. As far as the upper of the shoe goes, one notable difference in the lone Peak 5 is the lazer cut drainage holes that they have added to the toebox of the shoe. Sometimes when you’re out running trails you are inevitably going to run into river crossings, puddles or wet, muddy conditions and running around with wet feet can lead to blisters and a whole array of other problems that can ruin your day of running. This updated toe box is designed to help drain out any water that gets in the shoe and keep your feet nice and dry. Another very subtle change that they’ve made is that they have sewn this little flap of the outsole to the toebox where before this piece was just glued on and sometimes people were having issues with it coming unglued and separating from the shoe. It's little details like this that help give trail runners a bit more confidence in their gear when they are planning their next big race or adventure.
I know I, for one, am super excited to put some big miles on this shoe in the coming race season and see how they perform out in the field. Great video. I use Lone Peak 4 and Olympus 4 for the trails. I was a big Timp fan but quality is not same as previous years

Looking forward to wearing it. My gripe is that lame colourways except for the red option. Altra should look into more on its design and add some color flair coz I intend to use it performance wise and casual engagement. Give us what we want Altra. 🙏

Ruel, some additional color options would definitely be welcomed but a good coating of mud can add a unique flair to any trail shoe! We'd love to hear what you think of the shoes once you have a chance to put some miles in them.

I am not a runner at all (cyclist) but my son likes to run so I decided to start also. Yesterday I was in the store trying on some Salomons and they fit really tight. And another customer was there and out of nowhere recommended this brand. Not being into running I’ve obviously never heard of them, but tried them on and the wide fit was AMAZING! I went out today for a very short less than a mile run in them and they felt fantastic. I’ve been wearing them all day now breaking them in and I’m very impressed! I would definitely recommend them to anyone.

How are these suppose to fit? A bit of room in the toe box or skin tight

Do the LP 5's still have a narrow toe box or did Altra go back to the wide toe box like the LP 2.5's?
@runningwildpensacola3437
@runningwildpensacola3437 3 жыл бұрын
The Lone Peaks have definitely continued to get narrower and narrower over the past few years but this year they have actually started offering them in wide sizes as well which is a complete game changer for the folks who have been missing that old school Altra fit! If you have a shop locally that carries them it would definitely be worth trying them out in the wide size!

So I wear a 10.5 in most shoes. Do these fit true or will I need to adjust?
@runningwildpensacola3437
@runningwildpensacola3437 3 жыл бұрын
They fit pretty true to size but obviously the foot shape toe box will have a little bit more space than a more traditional shoe. If you have a shop locally, it would definitely be worth slipping one on to give it a test. Good Luck!

I'm torn between getting the Lone Peak 5 or the Superior 4.5. I'm curious about the differences between the two if anybody has any input?
@runningwildpensacola3437
@runningwildpensacola3437 3 жыл бұрын
Scott, They're both awesome trail shoes. In my personal experience, I usually prefer the superior for races up to about the half marathon distance because they are just a bit more nimble and you can feet the terrain underfoot a little bit more. The superior also has a more form fitting upper to it so if you like that really roomy feel you might prefer the lone peak. I find myself reaching for the superior more often than not on training runs and then I'll get the lone peak out if the conditions call for it. Hope this helps!

@@runningwildpensacola3437 thanks for your reply. I live in Indiana where we have some nature trails that aren't too technical with very mild elevation changes but the trails are mostly crushed stone, some gravel, dirt, sand, slab limestone, mud etc (pretty much a mixture of everything along the way). I have actually used vibrams for many years but they just don't hold up on the trails that well and do not provide much protection when there's no other choice but to run over rocks. My head says go for the superiors but for some reason another part of me wants to try the lone peaks. Eventually, I will buy both but I am trying to figure out which one to get first.
@runningwildpensacola3437
@runningwildpensacola3437 3 жыл бұрын
@@IndianaNaturalDog IF you have already been running in some Vibrams then the Superior will have more of that "minimal" feel that you are used to but both are great options! You can never have too many Altra's in the closet!

The undoubted king of trail shoes is the Hoka EVO Jawz!!.. Bouncier, more responsive, much lighter, much better grip in soft mud, also runs like a road shoe on pavement absorbing the hard surface since the lugs sink into the midsole despite it being thin. Absolute perfection & I have tried other Altra & Salomon & Saucony’s best shoes. Hoka have the holy grail of trail shoes that transition well to all terrains. The only weakness perhaps is the Hoka EVO Jawz maybe lacking for very long runs?. But then again the South American’s run 200+ miles in a day on old solid car tyre hand made shoes, so really we’re just spoiled in the 1st world society expecting total comfort. Plus the Hoka Jawz are so cheap...

I wish Hokas had more room in the toe box :( I must say I absolutely love the Torrent 2s but they'd be 10/10 if they were a bit more wide.

How do they fit in the length? I have always found the 4.5 just a little short on steep downhill sections.
@runningwildpensacola3437
@runningwildpensacola3437 3 жыл бұрын
The fit on the 5 feels very similar to that of the Lone Peak 4.5. If you are having issues with your foot running into the front of the shoe when you are running downhill you might consider going a half size up in size or maybe give the marathon knot a try to help keep your foot locked in to the back part of the shoe. Here is a link to my video on how to tie the marathon knot/ runners knot if you aren't familiar with how to do it kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4KxdJ6PZbxmoqc I hope this helps! Happy Trails!
