Altra Outroad Review by Run Moore | May 2022

So, I asked questions using Run Moore's web site, and got responses (very quickly!) that helped me decide which Altra model to buy next - folks, nothing beats good customer service. I bought my shoes through these guys, and I intend to continue to do so for the foreseeable future. I encourage everyone landing here to do the same, regardless of where you live. Thanks for the overview. Shoe companies really should just name shoe models the way you described them here - i.e. Torin and Torin Trail, Rivera and Rivera Trail. I think Brooks started doing that with their neutral and stability models. Would make it a lot easier for consumers to decide 😅

Love the comment about "there's enough people that come into the shop an say these shoes are too wide". It's all about how the person wearing the shoe perceives them! It's no Lone Peak, but we're not talking La Sportiva! Thanks for the video

Nice review ! Not tried the Rivera … liked the Timp 4 but found it almost too soft and a little too safe. Personally, and I am generally on my own here but I love the Mont Blanc - covered over 400 miles in my first pair, still going strong but just picked up second pair - flashy red. 👍

The Rivera is definitely worth a try, it's not quite as soft as the Timp.

I never really found the Timp that soft, but I only tested it. Did it soften up over time, or was this your thought as soon as you tried it?

@@illnesstoultra I think it definitely softened up within the first few miles, this is not uncommon with the Altra Ego midsole.

I am planning on transitioning to Altra shoes from brook ghost 14. My running form is midsole, but will still take it easy. I am between getting the outroads or Rivera. I do most of my running on hard dirt roads, with some asphalt.

I thought this had to be next on the trail side. Very interesting shoe for me as the Lone Peak doesn't rock my world as it does for many. I also really like the Rivera 2.

Hello! The shoe has a very good fit. But there is a problem, after an hour of running a considerable humidity builds up inside and the foot is almost wet. Has anyone encountered this unfortunate inconvenience?

Right fit, but would be great if they were water proof. The only water proof shoes Altra make are the Lone peak All Weather (All WHTR), as far as i know....

I found out they had a quality issue with their lacing system so they delayed the release of this shoe. No ETA.

I like the width of lone peak because I have high arches and a bunion. But due to the stone guard I returned them. Very uncomfortable I need them for work not walking on trails.

If you want a non-trail shoe with the same width, you might want to look into the Torin wide, it has plenty of width but no stone guard.

How much wider is this Altra outroad shoes compared to a standard Asics trabuco ?

The Altra isn't too noticeably wider than the Trabuco based on measurement. They are both close to average in terms of the forefoot width. The Outroad will feel wider because of the squared off toe. However, they are quite narrow for an Altra.

Normally all altra models have size 15...some are 16... but imo they all run short comparec to traditional brands

Thye should be available in 15, Altra makes almost all their models in 15, although sometimes they are only available for special order so give us a call if you don't see that option online.

This shoe looks like it has some light guide rails like the provision 6. I need stability shoes as I am heavy pronator on my right foot. Am i correct in my observation?

It looks like it but it’s more an aesthetic design. It’s not really going to provide the same guidance that a provision offers. The Olympus 5 is the only trail model in the Altra family that has actual stability in the shoe.

What UK size would you recommend for a 27cm foot length?

A 27cm long foot would be UK size 9 or 9.5. We recommend going up a half size from your exact foot length. However, we know some people like shoes fitting a pinch tighter. If you like a snug-fit shoe, size 9 should work for you.

It is a little less flexible than the Rivera 2 due to the thicker outsole. It does not have a stoneguard

@@bettyb1581 I finally tried a pair of these at home now that the new version is out. I felt the same odd feeling under my midfoot, like my toes kind off drop off a cliff? They might have been ok but ultimately other shoes felt better. Really wanted to like these! I think that sensation was the same in the Lone Peak.

Cross Country capability?

Technically yes, but honestly it would be low on my list of XC shoes. If you are using it to train on an XC course it would be fine but for a race situation, it is awful bulky and probably overkill on the cushion and weight. For racing, we have a lot of success with something like the Brooks Draft XC. It's cheap, light and fast. It can be worn with/without the spikes too.

This looks really interesting, but man, Altra seems to be placing themselves on the high end of the price spectrum on all of their shoes. I understand that inflation affects everyone, but geez.

The Inflation in fabric heavy markets is insane atm. Your looking at 20 percent in raw goods alone. Plus it's a rotation of back orders after backorder for accessories like grommets, zippers buttons.

Altra is not alone, across the board brands are increasing at about the same rate, it's just a product of supply chain issues and inflation.

@@RunMoore I understand that but Altra doesn't have any options in road or trail under $130, and most are much higher than that. I'm currently running in the Torins (and love them - except for the tongue). But at $150 will probably explore other options before I buy them again. Your content is awesome BTW.

I will pass on all slim fits from Altra,wish altra R&D dept see comments from its users....even standard fit is narrow....we need old altra fit....if you wish go on torpedo-fit, just add it separately, but all models shoulc be og fit as well
