Actually, Kenya's growth prospects are on its human resource which is the country's biggest foreign exchange earner. Besides outsourcing which you covered in barely 30 seconds, the country has a rapidly growing diaspora that contributes at least 3% to its GDP. Another thing is that Kenya's companies are heavily investing in the region more than any other East African country. Alongside joint infrastructure projects with other EA countries, the increased integration could dramatically improve the country's economy. Informative video though.

The "pay yourself first" strategy involves making a budget of wants and needs. Once you budget your needs, you know how much money you can pay yourself first before spending on wants. Pay yourself first, and pay bills when they are due...
@summerfield012 жыл бұрын
I know what the strategy is. Learned about it back in 2014 while taking an economics and finance class. Also, now that it was first created in the early 1920s when we were living in a very different economic state. That strategy should not apply to people where we are currently. I agree with everything else you said though and think this was great content to share. 🙏

The idea to increase manufacturing sectors' contribution to GDP is a challenge. India has Make in India scheme to improve productivity locally. As for Kenya, if it's natural resources are less compared to Niger, Ethiopia etc., importing raw materials and producing finished goods need a good comparison if cost efficiency with other countries. Arguably technology is an answer. Still Kenya needs lithium, iridium etc., to make high quality products to compete with high income countries and China. Focus on small scale industries and clusters to produce consumer goods. That way consumption can be matched with production. Slowly exports can be encouraged. Improve product and service quality. Include IT. Less of corruption and ease of going business can encourage foreign investment. Local employment with increase in farm income by modernizing agricultur is a must. Women labor has to be utilized by farming women entrepreneuriall groups and banking facilities can increase GDP.

Development Economics 101 from forever, which is not followed by most countries or printed by developed ones: Industry should focus on low value added areas for export. This is how all countries move up the value chain and industrialize. A lower exchange rate is also key to making the country competitive in terms of exports so it can attract industry. Evidence: Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, China.

The lamu port is fully government-financed, Kenya is not seeking to be a middle-income country but it's a lower-middle-income country. Before the post-election violence of 2008, the country's GDP growth was at 7.2%, it was among the fastest-growing economies in the world. I believe, we have great potential in increasing our manufacturing level. Income inequality is a monster that the current regime can't slay because it will be like someone trying to cut his own hand. But overall, Kenya has made great development in road infrastructure, energy and we are witnessing more and more Kenyan companies move to invest regionally.

fun fact Kenya did become an independant country in 1960 as a multi ethnic nation within british made borders. But before that the british empire gave Jubaland province to somalia as it was a somali inhabited region. The somali ihabited NEP of kenya (modern day garissa, wajir and mandera counties) also wanted to join Somalia but got almost ethnic cleansed and forced to stay in Kenya. The region has now no major importance to kenya but one might say that kenya is a bit of modern day colonial empire.

The part about the port of lamu was funded by the taxpayers money but built by a Chinese company

You cannot have the first opening words in your clip wrong. Kenya is the third largest economy in SSA. GDP nominal is what is used to measure how an large an economy is. If you were using GDP PPP as I have seen you defend yourself in the comment section, you should have stated so as you spoke.This type of mistakes makes some of us skeptical about the rest of the info in your video.
