Keen to see how this pans out. I’ve got a duel cab Ranger that I’d be keen to do something with. I’m thinking chassis extension and build a pop top camper back on it. (I don’t think my Defender will cut it with 3 of us travelling)

I wish you all the best with your new Hilux- Looks great! How heavy is the AluCab? I have a friend who mounted a trailer Cabin on a Hilux and the frane broke in Northern Africa. However thus was a non-foldable carbon fiber cabin and I assume, this was much heavier. So I guess you will not have that problem. However Defender frames are signifficantly stronger than the ones of Hilux or Landcruisers - Everything is a compromise in one way or another...
@lewieandtheroverКүн бұрын
The Alu cab is 300 kg, fully loaded around 500kg but good one the hilux can take around 1000kg so we have to keep an eye out

This is a very similar set up to us. The Defender 90 will get you further in the sand and mud BUT the Toyota will be almost as good. However, living and long road journeys will be sooooo much more comfortable. Our Alucab setup has been amazing. The shadow awning is superb and can withstand high winds. We bought the side awnings but only ever take 2 sides with us and use them if we are staying a day or two somewhere. It means we can park to the weather side and get out of the wind/ rain and cook etc in comfort. The mattress IS great and sleep better than at home. However, we found it uncomfortably hot and bought a cool topper….game changer! We uprated suspension to Old Man Emu for lift, weight and comfort…..superb and brilliant on washboards. One MUST do for the Hilux is gearbox and diff breathers. Cheap and simple to do BUT will prolong life of both. Also uprated the underside protection and recovery points. You’re going to love this over the Defender. Not as much character BUT you won’t need a Chiropracter and a shower at the end of each journey!😊

Wordt wel mooi, een 110 met hefdak was slimmer en zeker comfortabeler geweest. Maar, Alucab is een goede keuze. De awning is niets, gehad en snel weer verkocht. Daar zijn veel betere in, maar is vervangbaar.

Congratz ! Now the rover worship gang is and will always be after you for betraying the brand, you will miss doing hairpins in one turn, you will sh*t yourself much more often on traverses and sketchy tracks, but overlanding is not about brand love nor making yourself purposely miserable being stripped out of any conveniences on the road - its about being on the road, seeing places and meeting people. Having bit more comfort, more space, be able to have water reserve to take a shower and bear with yourself bit longer on remote trail, cook and sit inside when weather goes south, slap bigger fridge into the rig with more food supplies to be able to enjoy real, cooked meal in a stunning place instead of dehydrated-read-meal on a roadside parking and maybe even do such outrages things like have a huge inverter and battery and run a coffee machine or a hairdryer in the rig - these are not a bad things, especially doing it long term as you do. Ignore all the hate and have fun 😊 PS. you will be able to find a machine gun mounted hilux all over the world, so parts will no longer be a problem (not being in Toyota gang, still needed to admit this) :D
