So good to hear them described as content cameras and the benefits on leaner shoots! I picked up an FX6 for smaller productions so I didn't always need to hire, and it's been amazing to use on these. The image looks great for its price, it's light, has lower power and data consumption, built-in NDs, and good ergonomics for handheld and shoulder work and even the AF in a pinch (similar advantages to the Canon's). Whilst the image is important, it's just so easy to work with on the smaller content shoots where we don't have all the resources and crew available. I built my kit, so the rest of the accessories and camera support is pretty overkill for the FX6, and this means I only need to hire the camera body and lenses for larger shoots/TVCs, Alexa Mini etc.

Nice one. 100% agree. On small team (or single op) shoots, cameras like the c70 and fx6 really tick a lot of boxes and create great images. Are they Alexas? No. Lol. But they're a lot cheaper, very versatile and enable you to move fast. Sounds like you've made a great choice 👍

If you are an aspiring cinematographer who hopes to shoot a Hollywood level production one day as a Director of Photography (or just wants to reach that level), a Blackmagic can be an invaluable and unbeatable asset. This camera is a like a grand matured teacher and the first thing a Blackmagic teaches you is that you can make any type of film without the need of autofocus. Good DPs control what is outside the camera and just use the camera as a recording device. For example, lighting, framing, blocking, depth of field, camera movement etc. True, they need something which can do justice to their creativity while keeping things simple. But, it's mainly colour science, type of codec and the post production ecosystem. Blackmagic offers all of it. Also, pulling focus is not that tough. It is a skill which takes time to learn and master. But, once mastered, you get exceptional fulfilment while capturing life in front of the lens. I think Sony and Canon with their toys, which they release every other day at exorbitant prices, are lowering the bar. We are much capable whether as an artist or a creative professional. Don't lower the bar people. But, thank you for sharing your thoughts and making this video. It starts a conversation.

You're welcome! Thanks for taking the time to share your perspective! Appreciate it. Like I say in the video, the Canons are our content cameras (not our cinema cameras). there is a persistent opinion out there that autofocus is somehow “beneath” skilled camera operators and dp’s. Ive worked several jobs with an AC where they were pulling focus, ive pulled focus many times myself on solo jobs, and ive used cameras that have good face-tracking autofocus. let me just say that on some of those stressful, distracting solo jobs when there are a million things going on at once (im worried about sound, lighting may need a tweak, my talent is going off-topic, and i need to come up with five more questions) not needing to worry about focus all the time is a GODSEND and very PRACTICAL. No, OF COURSE pulling focus is not that hard. Its MAINTAINING focus through rushed, complex shots with shallow depth of field and difficult shooting situations. When I get to Hollywood OF COURSE im NOT using autofocus. but when im running a tracking shot on a ronin by myself and my talent is moving in unpredictable ways, autofocus is a godsend. Maybe some of you have a magical power to deal with all of that with zen-like calm and hit the focus mark perfectly while working solo. I for one will take the super-accurate canon face detection af. (btw, Im an Ursa user lol).

I'm alone in virtually all my shoots. At most I'll have one extra person on set. I've chosen to go with the Sony FX3 - Bias af... I've always been into the sony camera world in one way or another. - Already had E-mount glass - Compact body with cinema look to the camera body itself. - Great codec with enough colors for my workflow. - Easy to throw on a gimble or rig out. But... if money wasn't a factor, I would have sold my glass and gone with the C70. Big fan of the image, built in NDs is just revolutionary for me. Great camera overall. At the end of the day the FX3 is a brilliant camera that does exactly what I need it to do and that's enough for me. I'll probably stick with it for at least another 3 years.

Did the same. Used to shoot m32 and eventually that led to the P4k. Great camera and format but having used other cameras it always felt like it was missing a few things. I protested AF for years because in my day there was no such thing as AF. When we did start getting AF it sucked. Then for fun and missing a photo camera I bought a Canon M6 mk2 to also see for myself what all the hype was over DPAF. Despite the line skipping and lack of log of the camera I was immediately blown away with the color and ability to focus insane;y well. I then sold it and bought a Canon R6. Absolutely loved the photos and video out of the box. C-log 3 was vastly better and easier to use than I ever experienced with m43 V-log L. Only problem is it didn’t have raw. Not a huge deal for content creation, or run/gun work but it was definitely a reason to need to keep both. I have since picked up R5 and I can’t believe how darn near perfect the camera is for me. 8k for over sampling, 8k true raw internal, 8k or 5k cropped ProRes raw external to a Ninja V. It really had it all plus amazing photos. Now I know it’s not a cinema camera and I recognize that and still like many aspects of the P4k but I think it’s time to move on. While slower the R5 has true raw video while BRAW is a debayered and partially processed in camera. Not a big deal but it’s enough of a deal that many P4k shooters are using really old firmware so they can keep using the true cdng raw format. It’s just nice knowing we can have true raw again. I also feel like C-log 3 gets a bad reputation because of the visible noise at ISO 800 but that’s by design. Canon packs a ton of stops above middle gray. 6.3 to be exact. ISO 800 is similar to ISO 800 or 1000 on the Pocket cameras with a ton of visible noise. It’s that level of ISO that gives you a similar over 6 stops above middle gray. When you compare the two that way it really puts into perspective how much C-log 3 does. We don’t get to remap the stops with ISO like we do on the Pockets but c-log 3 needs to be treated the same way. Shooting a stop over essentially gives the same cleaner look and 5.3 stops over of the P4k at its native ISO 400. Two stops over is like ISO 200 on the Pockets and 3 stops over is like ISO 100 or 1250 on the Pockets. Same limited highlight range but insanely clean shadows. C-log 3 is not a one size fits all log format. Much like the Pocket cameras you need to decide where you need the stops to be. Do you need to protect highlights or shadows? A low contrast green screen or dark house horror movie shoot could shoot 3 stops over since there is hardly any specular over 90% reflective anyway. Shooting outdoors you may want stronger highlights. Thing with Canon is since it starts higher at ISO 800 that about as worse as one may ever need the noise to be. 6.3 stops over is a ton and there is almost zero need to shoot under to gain more highlights. The dual native ISO on the R5 is amazing as well. While ISO800 may have the noise of ISO 800 on the Pocket cameras it’s ISO 3200 where the true strength of the R5 shines. It looks vastly cleaner than the P4k at ISO 3200 with the full amount of dynamic range. I trust ISO 3200 and even 6400 on the R5 a lot more than I do on the Pocket cameras. To me the second native ISO of the Pockets was always about having a cleaner ISO 1250 and 1600. Highlight detail was pretty crushed at that level however. Now I get the insane low light of ISO 3200 with the full dynamic range of the sensor. Even ISO 12,800 is usable on the R5 is some situations. Now keep in mind I believe light takes priority over sensor ISO. The reason we have dual native ISO however is so we don’t need as much light output. We still want to sculpt the shot with light but now we can do so with smaller LED lights that can run off a battery. This is where the ISO 3200 is pretty amazing on the R5.

Hi there, I’m considering going from my BMPCC4K to the Canon R5C, but I’m hesitating bc the image from the BM cams are so filmic, whereas much of what I’ve seen from the Canon cams looks a bit too digitally sharp and plastic-y, less organic to my eye. I prefer a softer film look. Any thoughts on this? I understand much can be achieved in post, but curious what you think, having worked with both cams? Thanks!
@AlucinorProductions
@AlucinorProductions 6 ай бұрын
The r5c is a VERY sharp camera. I would say the Canon C70 is closer to BM in terms of the image. The C70 looks sharp compared to an Alexa 2k, but is noticeably softer than the 8k sensor on the r5c, even if you're recording in 4k. We've kept our 6k pro but it barely gets used at the moment, but still can't see the point in selling it. A 1/8 promist or other filter can be a godsend on a camera like the r5c for a more organic look... But, and I know this can be a pain to hear. I would rent one for a day shoot both cameras under different conditions then use the next day to go through it and see what you think. We definitely favor the C70 over the r5c most of the time.

I have an R5 and a R5C. I was very close to getting the C70 over the R5C but ultimately settled on the R5C as the image quality is not that much worse than the C70 and kit size was an important factor. Also, down the road I could always sell my R5 and the R5C could become a true hybrid and I could move up to a newer C camera if one were to come out.

Sounds like a good way to go, with great forethought built in. The big benefit the C70 has for video is those dual mini XLR inputs and ND's built in. I haven't used the r5, but expect the r5 and r5c would be an easier/faster match in post for two camera shoots

Thanks for this info. I’ve used canon since 1999. Since over 10 years I shoot video and photos. In 2018 I bought 2 bmpcc4k. I love them, and for a while I was happy with it. But i don’t shoot cine or anything close to it. I do live events, corporate and some low end commercials. So I have 3 concerns about them. 1- I miss autofocus. 2- Can make them look exactly the same when I’m doing live events. For corporate I don’t mine because I shoot in raw. For b-roll I found myself more comfortable with ProRes. 3-After you rig them, they are heavy and the monitor is extremely hard to see when outdoors. I’ve been looking at Sony Fx6 but as you said, there is something in Sony colors that doesn’t convince me. Now, people are saying that the r5c autofocus isn’t as good as the r5. I have an r5 at work and I love it. But it overheated. But video quality is amazing. I want to keep the bmpcc4k and add something like r5c or c70 but I’m not sure yet. Is an investment for the next 4 to 5 years.

Imagine that’s stills vs dedicated video mode differences with the AF. But as someone who never shot with AF before, I find both to be superb for interviews. The C70 just got face tracking at 120 too so it just keeps getting better and better. Both great cams with different strengths but if it’s dedicated for video it’s hard to go past the c70

I‘m thinking about getting the R5C or BMPCC6K Pro. Autofocus and stills/video cam in one or better codecs, cheaper, built in nds? Smaller canon or bigger BM? It‘s such a hard choice and often it is the price that lets me tend towards the BM, but somehow I don‘t want to miss autofocus for gimbal work or interviews where you have to take care of 2 cameras at once. I had the Pocket6K in the past and of course often did not bring it with me on „smaller“ shoots or travels - but the 5c I could just take instead of my R6 and go everywhere and still get the best results…

Both make great wedding cameras. The resolution of the 6k can be great for the wide of the ceremony. I do think having the option to shoot 100-120 fps is handy if you want those super slomo posed moments, in which case I think the C70 is better... but the 6k pro is a bargain.

The r5c is sharper. Shadows are cleaner on the C70 at iso800. The C70 has slightly more DR (mainly in the shadows), but they aren't drastically different and we've done plenty of multicam interviews using both. I haven't used the R5 so can't comment on that, but you need to shoot raw if you want to process clog2 in post. I would say with the C70 you can under expose a little (to protect highlights) and bring it back up. But with the r5c you don't want to underexpose as a general rule. Unless you're leaving it there in post for artistic reasons... I will say we have since bought a second C70 since making this video. A few reasons. Way better power (batteries), built in ND's are just so vital as is mini XLR connections. And matching two C70s (one often handheld and one often on a gimbal) is easier. r5c becomes a Ccam or Bcam when the team has two shoots on one day. Love both cameras. I use the r5c in 8k raw for my bits to camera on the channel. But for general video work the C70 is the better all rounder IMO... Also just got the Canon RF-EF variable ND adaptor for the r5c so that will likely now run with our Sigma Art EF glass (as our Canon glass is RF).

@@doktorr23 No worries. We have moved away from using the full frame adaptor. There seems to be a bit of a loss of contrast and some softness towards the edges, at least with ours - so that's basically not getting used. We do use EF lenses with an RF adaptor with control ring... But main lenses would be the zoom trinity 15-35, 24-70 and 70-200. I use the 15-35 and 70-200 far more than the 24-70 as 24-70 not quite wide enough on s35. I also use the 50mm RF a lot. The 85mm 1.2 RF for interviews (not broll) - I use that more for stills on the r5c. I'm also using the Sigma Art 18-35 1.8 and 35 1.4 a lot... still waiting on Canon to release a new RF 35mm prime. Will pounce on that. If I'm shooting 100fps broll 18-35. If it's 25-50 I use the Canon 15-35 for the lens stabilisation. We also have the Sigma Art 50, 24 and the 24-70. Canon glass definitely delivers though but I use the 18-35 A LOT for broll and the Sigma Art 35 a lot for interviews (until Canon releases the new 35)

You will miss the screen and the internal ND's for sure. I haven't used other current stills/video options enough to advise. I love it for stills, but the C70 is my go to. (Shane shoots on the r5c more than me for gimbal stuff. I use the r5c for talking to camera on youtube though and the 8k is VERY handy for that). We'll be making a new video soon testing the r5c, C70 and BMPCC 6k pro as b-cams for our Alexa Classic (for an upcoming short) that might give you an idea of how the r5c performs next to the 6k pro (and Alexa)...

@AlucinorProductions Жыл бұрын
Personally I loved the Fuji xt3 for personal use. Stills and isolated video work. But we often struggled to grade it alongside BMD cameras. I think a key factor is do you want autofocus on a second interview camera with reliable face tracking? If not the new 6k could be great. But, I do think sticking with canon (or all BMD) makes grading easier. We literally just got a second c70 as although the r5c is great and we’re keeping it. The NDs save us time and time is saved in post bringing the cameras into line. The dual gain sensor on the c70 is just so nice too. And now we’ll often have the full frame adaptor on one (with sigma 24-70, 35 or 50 art) with RF lenses on the other… or all RF depending on the needs of the job. I know that doesn’t entirely answer your question but that’s what we’ve landed on. The r5c will still get used for light gimbal work and Ccam but I expect the main A/B cam option will be c2 C70’s

Great video and interesting timing for myself. I have been in the Black Magic ecosystem for some time now and I am considering a move to an FX9 to fill the space of my G2. I am all Sony for stills so moving over to the Canon feels like it would be a double change up.... One additional concern for me personally is the lack of support from BMD on their older cameras. Not long after the G2 came out, BMD dropped support for the G1 and would no longer service it, meaning if anything broke it was a paperweight. That is something that certainly gives me pause from continuing to purchase from them as a full time professional who relies on my gear for work...

Interesting. We've found the digital IS to work well with the optical IS but have ended up deciding its pretty much not worth using on the primes as it just doesn't feel natural enough and jerks around. And the optical IS is pretty darn good that the digital doesnt add much. TBH I'm not using it at all now (digital IS)... I find shooting off the shoulder mostly eliminates micro jitters, but I'm waiting for a new zacuto grip to come in so I can run n gun with one arm/grip... sold the others with our Ursa which was a bit dumb... but I find shoulder with an evf brings so much stabilisation... and the added weight with a vct pro baseplate helps stabilise for underslung shooting. I'd been doing shoots (whilst waiting on new gear) with a very bare bones light weight setup. Just using two hands out in front to get certain angles and the jitters were there for sure

Thanks for the video! Some random thoughts as I was watching it.... -- I've got two C70s + one r5c, and currently considering a third C70. Wouldn't get a C500 ii or C300 iii (or another r5c -- just not as reliable as C70, especially for long recordings -- it still has limited record time, and still overheats). And I'm also still using 1DC and 5D3 cameras for particular jobs. So, that tells you what I think of Canon. But, that said.... -- Autofocus. So, you emphasised that you like autofocus during interviews, especially for shallow depth of field. It gives you peace of mind, etc. Personally, and maybe it's just me, I switch off autofocus during interviews, and I wouldn't recommend it for this use case. The thing is, if the talent leans forwards or backwards, and you're using a photography lens, well... Maybe the talent stays in focus, but you also get this obvious, artificial-looking, shot-destroying lens breathing, especially for shallow depth of field. Not only does this breathing make the shot ugly, but it makes it difficult to do any sort of "replacement" work (if you need to cover up something in the background of the interview -- like signage outside a window or a power outlet on a wall). And if your interview subject is a leaner and does this all the freaking time, then it's not the sort of thing you can cover up with a bit of overlay. Perhaps that's down to my settings, though.... Maybe you could set the camera to not adjust focus so quickly.... But, then, does that defeat the purpose of leaving autofocus on at all? But, yep, autofocus is indispensable for gimbal work. Don't leave home without it! And it's also great for initially acquiring focus; none of us is getting any younger, and everyone's eyes succumb to age-related myopia in the end. The green box that assists manual focus is great on the C70, by the way. -- Digital IS. I wouldn't recommend this either!! Maybe if you're doing a macro shot and want a bit of extra smoothness. The problem, as long-haired you mentioned, is the jumping. Particularly if you're using a close-up lens, you're going to get this all the time... And definitely if you're on some other form of stabiliser, like a tripod or a gimbal, turn that damn thing off. Even with cameras from 20 years ago, it wasn't recommended to have IS on with tripods. -- Cheers for mentioning that 50p to 25p in post doesn't have the same motion blur. A lot of people I know simply shoot in 50p as a matter of course for the option of slow-down in post, but, yup, it doesn't look quite the same. -- Three negatives with RF lenses.... Firstly, cost, when compared with EF. Secondly, with the C70, you get the extra stop when using EF + speedbooster. That's a big deal to many people; I guess it depends what you're shooting. Thirdly, the RF 70-200 can't be used with a doubler (again, your mileage will of course vary as to whether this is a turn-off). Otherwise, the reduction in weight with the 70-200 is welcome.... -- Your Arri Alexa Classic -- gorgeous images. Better than everything else in this video! Thanks for sharing.

Agreed the Arri Alexa Classic still has the nicest image easy. (Just not in low light). I've literally shot hundreds of interviews on the Canon's with autofocus. Haven't had leaning be an issue. Maybe I've been lucky with the leaners lol... The peace of mind of the AF is huge especially when shooting at F1 (with speedbooster) or 1.2 on the RF 50mm. I've predominantly shot with RF lenses, with a Sigma Art 35mm standing in until Canon release their 35. However I've recently had a bunch of doco/promo corporate shoots in uncontrolled (sometimes dim) lighting. Recruitment videos for different industries in places like big kitchens and underground mines (sometimes quite dark). For those shoots I opted for the Canon speedbooster and shot solely with EF Sigma Art 24-70 2.8, 35mm 1.4 and 50mm 1.4. I don't have a 70-200 EF so missed a few shots that I would have shot on those, but I spend most of my time between 18-50mm so the compromise was worth it. I could have hired one but didn't lol. Last week I switched back to S35 as I was predominantly outdoors in sunlight and knew I'd need the RF 70-200 for a bunch of shots. I find the Speedbooster a great tool for the right project. And the IS on the Sigma 24-70 (compared to my most common s35 Corporate lens, the Sigma 18-35mm with no IS) is very handy when shooting standard frame rates. I do A LOT of 100fps Broll and don't need any Lens IS for that. But when shooting 25fps it comes in handy for sure.

@@AlucinorProductions Re the leaners, I've got a suspicion.... You mention you've shot hundreds of interviews. But is it possible that in every one of those interviews, you always had at least a few metres' separation between your interview subject and their background? If so, then I think having that separation is a handy tip for anyone wanting to use autofocus. In my normal setup, I've got a window about a metre behind the interview subject, and then the background in the far distance. It's on the window frame that the effects of breathing are most noticeable. I'm usually using a 50mm at around f/8, so it's not super shallow.
@AlucinorProductions
@AlucinorProductions Жыл бұрын
@@artstories5828 I usually aim to have as much depth as possible so yeah backgrounds are usually at a distance. I'm also most often at 1.2 - 1.4 so that may also limit the visibility of breathing as the backgrounds are most often extremely out of focus. Just seems the look clients like the most.

The autofocus and stabiliser functions as demonstrated by your Canons have really come a long-long way. My recall is that from go with its original XL1, the Canon color rendition was the best. My camera assets are distinctly low-budget. More recently I have been getting by with multiple copies of dead cameras and arriving at enough bits and pieces to build a goer. That tends to leave a person several generations behind the latest and greatest. Recently I have managed to upgrade to the Ursa Mini Pro G1. My previous camera is an Ursa Mini 4.6K which is also a bitzer put together with some Mini Pro pieces. BM must have sold lot of Mini Pro G1s or they might have had a high mortality rate as I have had a bountiful harvest. Sadly for me but good for BM and owners, the Ursa G2s and 12Ks seem to be staying together much better as distressed examples are not turning up on eBay. Your G2 experience seems to be an exception. I would like to have used the Mini Pro ND filter wheel assembly on the Ursa Mini 4.6K but there was too much difference between the two types for this to happen. Whilst essentially keeping the same form, BM does not seem to have sat on its hands. There have been many subtle changes, redesign work and generally the product seems to have matured. My compromise with the Ursa 4.6K was to add an internal IRND filter on the back of the anti-reflection cone in the camera throat and shim the mount forward to compensate for the change in flange to focal plane distance the filter introduces. I did this to bring the intensity of outdoors daylight down to sensible levels without having to cart matteboxes and filters around or use fast shutter and pinpoint apertures. It is as expected not so good in low light conditions but for my purposes I can live with that. The "new" Mini Pro has BRAW, so I shall have to come to grips with that in Resolve which I in my geriatricy have finally just managed to learn my way around.

Also a one time owner of a Canon XL1. Loved that odd little beast. Left Canon during the DSLR video era when the video was line skipped and looked like artifact filled 720p video. It was an interesting creative look but the purist in me just couldn’t accept the artifacts of line skipping and over sharpening. After many years on the Panasonic side Im now back 100% Canon. Canon had a rather dark era where they purposely limited their cameras and refused 4K but those days do appear to be over now. Still a few head scratcher decisions like a histogram that disappears while recording but for the most part I have learned to live with those issues.

On the documentary that's on my channel, we used two BMPCC 6k Pros, the two-pin 12v power supply stopped powering my camera and it wouldn't turn on. I can only use a d-tap to dummy battery with it. Then my buddies started having glitches and artifacts on his footage during recordings. Black Magic was no help when I asked them to repair my camera. The image is great but I don't trust it. I like both the images for different reasons. They are really hard to compare, and I don’t favor either. To me the ergonomics / reliability of the c70 wins over image. One thing to keep in mind with the 15-35 CanonF2.8 vs the Sigma 18-35 F1.8, since it's a full frame lens you can use it fully on the R5C its important to consider the crop factor effecting the effective aperture. The Sigma on the C70 would be equivalent to a fullframe f2.5 (because the crop factor of the C70 is 1.43) so the Canon lens on a full frame body will provide a very close look to the R5C in regards to background blur and similar fields of view. Also out of curiosity, did you discover the luminance (LCD backlight) setting in the C70 monitor settings? I found I needed it set to +2 for anything outdoors, but I've seen a lot of reviewers of the camera complain about the brightness of the screen not knowing you could increase it, since it's a poorly named setting. So just curious if you found that setting and what you send to run it in +1 or +2, thanks!
@AlucinorProductions
@AlucinorProductions 2 жыл бұрын
I did discover that setting! Then forgot about it lol. I'll go back into it tomorrow. Still a lot dimmer than that bmpcc 6k pro monitor qhich is bright and contrasty... but normally have a ninja v on top... waiting for my zacuto kameleon LPe6 power adaptor as not running with vlocks like I was with the Ursa... As for the 18-35... it's def just for the 6k pro and the c70. Not going near the r5c. But it's a great match for the c70. I can shoot a lot of 50-100p broll on that and the 50mm. Actually thinking of picking up a Sigma 35 1.4 art until Canon releases an rf one. Just to use with an ef control ring adaptor which we have for the 18-35. Be nice to have a 35mm prime for the r5c too (as of course the 18-35 doesn't cover it and isn't as fast)
@avdcam
@avdcam 2 жыл бұрын
@@AlucinorProductions Totally, I just try to remind myself, that if I'm on a full frame camera, the f2.8 lenses are a lot close to the field of view and depth of field control as the F1.8 on a crop sensor. So often much more comparable than otherwise. It's more like comparing a 15-35 f2.8 to a 25-50 F2.5, if all things were equal. I still can't believe they haven't released a 35mm, but if the rumors are true maybe it will be an f1.2. Might be worth getting an ef art lens, and hell while you are at it, pick up the speed booster canon makes for the c70, I do find the occasional ghosting flare that hurts contrast a bit with it, but overall it really performs decently with the old canon ef primes. And to be honest, I sometimes find the sigma motors a little loud and breathing just brutal. It's also great to hear someone finally mention shooting wide open in full daylight, and how 6-7 stops of ND just isn't even close to enough at 24p. I used Sony cameras for years and while the vari ND system is powerful and kind of magic, I still prefer having the option to drop in 10 stops of ND on a whim.

@@avdcam 100% on all fronts. I'm gonna be soon happy if they release a 35 1.2. That's why I thought go the sigma route for now (cheaper, and have sigma zooms for 6k) as I know ow we'll fork out for the 35mm rf when it arrives. We do have the Canon speedbooster. But the only lens I'd use on it atm (due to selling ef zeiss lenses) would be the 24-70 sigma art. Which if running on a gimbal we might do... 🤔
@avdcam
@avdcam 2 жыл бұрын
@@AlucinorProductions AN F2.8 on a gimbal at full frame is a nice fit. The speedbooster does limit AF performance more, but I really like that extra range sometimes. Your RF 24-70 would be excellent on the R5C for gimbal work I would imagine. Since sometimes the build in IS can help, sometimes it doesn't, depends I think on the gimbal settings and operator. Sometimes they fight each other, other times it adds a noticeable smoothness. I wish you could power the R5c from the ronin, but I think the USB pd off the ronin isn't powerful enough. Could be worth looking into tilta's accessories for unslung mini v-mounts and quick releases so you could keep the R5C ready to rock at a moments notice on the gimbal and power all day.

Also I really wanted something more rugged and weather sealed for shooting in the PNW weather as I've always felt the c70 really lacked in that area. The R3, while expensive, check all those boxes and has great battery life. Miss some of the video features(false color, etc) but I've been working around it. Might eventually add an R5c as my C cam. I actually left Canon for Blackmagic. Canon has a very high end video camera look where Blackmagic has a very filmic look imho. I’ll probably Aquire some Sony FX cameras later on to compliment my BM cameras for documentary or Events. All cameras are just tools. There is no perfect camera.

Agreed. Just shooting a short on Venice 2, FX6 and Alexa classic (for flashbacks). Def just about going with the tool that works best for the job. Either Canon or Sony are great all rounders for video production. We still have the BMPCC 6k pro (it’s so good), just not the Ursa

Definitely a downgrade in image as far as narrative work goes but needed if you're doing wedding/docu work that requires quick setups.

Yep as I say in the video they're our content cameras not our cinema cameras. (Have an Alexa for that... will do some tests to see what works better matching in between our 6k, c70 and r5c) Do you mean downgrade from the Ursa?

@@AlucinorProductions All Canon = pastel video. 'Cinematic' video, but video. KZbin is full of these tests and it is always the BM cameras that wind up taking the B-Roll to Alexa's sensor trophy. British drama sets are what pulled BM from closing down when the original 2.5K was picked up by Luther, Sherlock and a few other productions to run with their Alexa lines.

@@acedia4453 very cool. Certainly not selling our 6k pro. I was just giving a talk at a Tafe this week recommending they buy one if buying a camera for Indi cinema. Yeah Canon certainly has a look and it's great for corporate work imo

That Sony ND is magic stuff. I agree the new Sony line - FX9, 6, 3 etc are huge improvements in color. Still happy with Canon for now (I'd likely adapt and be happy with Sony if I went that route) but very VERY happy with the C70 and clients are happy too which is awesome. When the cost makes sense we'll pick up a used Alexa Mini most likely, our classic is just too darn hefty for a lot of our work. But color wise it honestly smokes both Canon and Sony

@@AlucinorProductions Great to watch aussie perspectives on these cameras. we do real estate/wedding videos, some corporate and regional TV ads with an R5, DJI RS3pro and our EF lenses. Was just about to pull trigger on ronin 4d with e-mount and FX6 until I was cruising US ebay for cheap ARRI's and saw your channel. Now after watching your stuff I'm back to agonising over whether to get the c70 and BMPCC6kpro instead because we have so many different lighting situations I'm scared to go Sony. The rs3pro lidar autofocus might make the blackmagic useable and get us into more narrative stuff that I dream of doing. Also we've already got EF and RF glass.... fuck! lol I don't know what to do. I can see you guys have agonised just as much from your knowledge and great videos on this stuff. Cheers from Central Queensland!

@@AerialEyesProduction yeah it’s always such a tough call moving systems. I’m happy with our decision but there’s still things I miss about shooting on the Ursa and Zeiss lenses. They were great for single operator manual focus. I knew the 50 like the back of my hand… I do think the C70 is still the best all rounder around especially with autofocus face tracking now active at 120p. Yes the c300 is better but way more expensive. One thing, if you do end up with a c70 make sure you use a hdmi clamp or protector. I didn’t at first and broke two or three cables quickly.. I’m just used to have Sri which is far more robust. Other than that, no complaints really. It’s not as sharp as the r5(c) but it’s a lovely image. After the CineAlta primes vid (back at work next week) I’m planning to test the canons and the 6k with the aero to determine their usability alongside the aero for a pretty big short we’re doing in April. Thanks for watching mate! Always great to connect with fellow Aussies on here!

@@AlucinorProductions Yeah I used the demo in the Melbourne D1 store and I had my gimbal rig there to compare (r5+15-35+ninjaV+battery on RS3pro). It's not only heavier but kind of awkward to hold compared to the smallrig handles most of us use on the DJI gimbals. The grip is narrower and to hold at a comfortable height and distance from body you have to tilt the screen up a lot. No xlr and internal sound is crap... Apart from that it was incredible. From inside case to hitting record in less than a minute, the UI/menus is fkn awesome and the lidar autofocus was great, including slow racking and sticky object detect (but I only tested at low range under 10 metres) using a Samyang Xeen 24 f1.5. At least a stop more dynamic range than the R5 (which is big for us shooting real estate and weddings). Can't speak to the colour science much as I didn't get shots in multiple locations or any DLog files but felt like Mavic Cine prores colours without noise in the shadows. I Was (am? lol) planning to use it for important movement shots like Day/night transitions, high tension wedding moments and fast tracking while running etc that don't require holding onto it for half an hour at a time. Inspire 3 is launching at CES this month I heard... If it uses the same zenmuse mount but with new better lenses then maybe you get away without having to go E mount lenses and none of use have to deal with jaundiced skin tones hehehe... Btw I just ordered a C70, thanks for the great content and inspiration from your short movies! Back to pondering on BMPCC6k + ARRI classic VS Ronin 4D
