Canon R5C vs Canon C70 - Which One Is Better?

It’s easy, have them both! For some work the C70 is the “best” For other work the R5C is the “best” I have them both to, and I like the softer more “movie” look on the C70 for some work. And the sharper more “clinical” look on the R5C for other work.. I mostly use RF lenses, and I’m very happy with them! Thanks for the video, and all your other videos, they are grate👍

Hey Josh! I've been going through all the C70 videos I can find and just stumbled upon yours. Thanks for the thorough comparison. I've pretty much come to the conclusion that I will get both. I need the audio ports and convenience of the C70 for my A-cam and I see no reason to not go for the R5c for my B-cam. By the way, your camera presence is great. I was like no way this guy hasn't been doing this for a long time then I saw your farm channel. Great stuff! Just subbed to both.

Those are all great cameras. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. If you need photo, then the R5C or R3 would obviously be better for you.

i fixed the R5C hdmi port problem. 3d printing and some hdmi adapter makes it even better than if it had full sized as the HDMI port is angled in parallel with the body meaning you can leave the monitor plugged in without snagging the bag

The samples were telling. The text on your hat with the R5c is really crisp. The R5c may be the new A cam and my C70's the B and C shots. Can't go wrong is a nice feeling. And the matching... sweet.

Just got my R5C to replace my A7SIII and A7IV alongside the BMPCC6K Pro. What a culture shock this has been after shooting the Canon system for the first time in 5-6 years. The inbuilt ND's would be great on the R5C too.

Or well, there are things that are not that great with Sony but then again there are things that are not that great with Canon so its just about picking whats most important to you. The main reason for me was just that I've wanted a Blackmagic for quite some time and my partner is getting a Komodo (but I also need a great hybrid for my personal work). It just makes more sense for us to invest in EF/RF mount. I could have always adapted those lenses to Sony but then I'd lose most of the aspects where Sony is superior to Canon so it doesnt make that much sense in my personal case.

Just got the battery grip for my R5C (best ever idea) and the Canon ND adaptor 🤩 Now its more comparable to my c70 + speedbooster, because they are both looking “full-frame” and both now use EF lenses and both have “build in” Nd filters 😎🤟 Next up.. we need Canon to put c-log 2 in the R5C and the possibility to shoot in XF-AVC codec in 4K- 120 fps on the c70 as you can on the R5C And i need to get the XLR top piece for my R5C.. then they are more alike 😅

C70 all the way for my workflow. I even use it over the Komodo because I don't like having to use VND's. So my Komodo is stuck on studio only duty while my C70 is my workhorse because I get 2 powered mini-XLR outputs WITHOUT needing a rig or handle. I also get full size HDMI for a monitor. Battery life is incredible with BPA30's or even better with a single BPA60. No v-mount needed and anyone who uses them just uses them for random shit or to look professional. Then to top it all off is how amazing built-in ND's are. You don't realize just how good built-in is until you get used to it then you have to use a Komodo and want your C70 back (this just happened to me on a shoot).

Nice Josh, I own the r7 and will get the r5c this week. I can only afford 1 L lens so will buy the 24-105 f4 video lens and use it on both. Obviously I am not looking at running 2 cams at the same time at the same time. Apart from that are all the Canon Pro cinema cameras 35mm except the R5c. Should I record in 35mm on the R7 and the R5c? Are there any pros or cons in doing so? I look forward to your thoughts.

I think face detect only works for humans, but you could probably use the touch to track feature.

Both c70 and r5c are awesome cameras for syre. For now I’m satisfied w/ r5 & ninja v+ combo. In near future if c70 mk2 comes out with full frame sensor and additional AF & tracking options from stills department and if i ask little more, if it had better highlight retention, it would be all that i ever ask for 👍🏻

20:52 - R5c seems to be much brighter in the shadow and shows more Dr with the bright areas only slightly more clipped for what I may see Did you adjust anything in this clip or has just the Canon lut applied?

I wouldn't use that side by side to judge dynamic range of these two cameras. I did a whole video about that if you want to check it out. In these clips I did a basic color correction from Clog2 and Clog3 and then matched them as best as possible. I did not use a lut. Angel bird is the way to go. Have a handful. But there is a MAJOR issue. The plastic chips. It’s happened on several. Spoke to AngelBird. They sent out replacements. And acknowledged the issue. They know about it. Be careful.

They sent me the cheaper. 512GB CFExpress saying , hey sorry it was a small batch it happened to. And now it’s starting to happens with this new one too! I have a couple. Have you put the AF settings to the max. speed and max. reaction time? In this max. settings I like the AF from the R5C and it gets close to my R5. Then I disagree with the sharpness that it is the greatest with RF Lenses, at least in the R5C (I have no C70) I would say that a good EF-lens in RAW is sharper than a good RF lens just oversampled but without RAW. I will make a video to find out if my theory is right, because when I shoot in RAW (with a EF 70-200 f2.8 III or with a EF 500mm f4 IS L) I feel that it is sharper than when I shoot with the RF 24-70 f2.8 when I don't use RAW. To have the same focal length, I will put the RF 24-70 against a EF 24-70, and not against my sharpest EF-lenses. How is the sharpness between the R5C in super 35 against the sharpness of the C70, I guess also there the R5C is better. Thank you for this kind of comparison videos👍

C70 is the clear winner. Dynamic range and Nd filters are killer. It's something I have come to notice more and more is the DR. This sets it so far ahead IMO. It has much more organic film look too.

Love the video! Quick question… when doing your autofocus test, I was looking at the color and shadow detail in the woods behind you and noticed a lot more detail in the shadows with the C70. Your video isn’t the first I’ve noticed this on either and I believe it’s the difference between the clog 2 and clog 3. Have you tried using the R5c in RAW and processing it as clog2? I tried this once and I’m fairly certain I got better shadow detail and colors. I’d just love your input on that.

I think C70 is more run and gun if you don't need photo - but really? no need for photo? - but I would rather have all the offerings of RC5 that afford a more reliably sharper image with more dynamic range (AKA 8K full frame and better AF) BUT may require a few steps to get - than use a C70 which sounds like a video-only camera that offers ease over image relative to RC5. After seeing all the comparisons, I wonder: Is C70 for the lazier shooter willing to put ease over image? ;) RE R5C battery life: It's really OK. I was so worried from all the warnings about it, that I came armed with 7 batteries for recent shoots - expecting to frantically change - and only used 1.5 batteries on both shoots (for 3 and 4 hour vid shoots). The LPE6N batteries last longer than the LPE6. I have just had two shoots with the R5C (using 4K) - after a couple prior shoots with my R6 - and WOW WOW WOW - the images in video (and photo) are phenomenal (and I thought the R6 was fantastic). I think it's default AF was slightly slower in the R5C than R6 UNTIL I played with the manual AF settings and chose a +3 of increase on responsiveness - and it's fast (and I love the modularity).

Why you care so much about the sharpest image? This is a photographer thing. Film makers usually want a softer more filmic image. I never use sharpening, if anything i make my image softer. Thats why so many guys use mist filter. Super sharp images are phone like and undesirable.

Sharpness and detail are two separate qualities, and it's much easier to soften an image than it is to sharpen one in post
