Hey there.
In this video, we’re diving into some other projects we have been tackling while doing our CUMMINS REPOWER!
Painting Bottom Paint on Our Aluminum Boat 🖌️: I show you step-by-step how to apply a boot stripe and bottom paint on an aluminum boat.
Adjusting Propellers and Shafts for the Cummins Repower: So many other systems have to be altered to accommodate the new Cummins engines. Watch as we talk about the propellers and shafts and what has to be done to them.
Marking the Anchor Chain: I’ll teach you how to mark your anchor chain with my very own "Janis Marking System", so you always know how much you’ve let out. It makes anchoring safer and easier.
🛠️ Hit that play button to see how we tackle these tasks and others during this extensive Cummins Repower. Whether you're here for tips, tricks, or just love boat content and entertainment, this video has something for everyone.

While applying alodine. After rinsing run an even sheet of water over the treated area. What you are looking for is a break free sheet of water. Any where the water parts and runs around, retreat that area until the water sheets evenly over the area.

The pretty gold stuff you prepped the boot stripe with is Hexevalant Chromium. You should not be rinsing it off in the boat yard. It's highly illegal..

We were told this yard had a filtration system and that it was acceptable. We will have to look into that. Thanks for the tip.

Question about the engines. Do you have to add more ballast to the boat to compensate for the engines being lighter? Your definitely not scared or hard work 🍻
@OnboardTangaroa
@OnboardTangaroa 7 күн бұрын
We have definitely been mulling over options. The boat is not very tall so there isn't a lot of weight up high. She is inherently fairly stable. It also helps to have all of the tankage built into the bottom of the hull. My current thought on ballast is to build a few seawater ballast tanks down in the engine room below the generators. That way we can pump in water for ballast when we are light on fuel or empty it when we are full of fuel or want to run light. The weight removed with the engines is basically the same weight as one of our three keel tanks when full. It likely wont have a great impact but I am planning options regardless. We are a little bit crazy with what we take on. The repower was definitely more work than originally anticipated but that was anticipated 🤣. Thanks for watching!

@@OnboardTangaroa might want to look into hydrophobic coatings for the hull bellow the water line for efficiency, the navy uses them in many applications

Your guys boat has an odd hull design. The stern really over hangs past the wheels. Do you get a lot of rumbling through the aft section of the hull. The big flat section would give you a lot of speed in calm water. Osborne has been around for decades. The problem when you run a large diameter wheel on long prop shafts you get the snap back. Believe it or not the shaft twists especially stainless shafts. You can break off coupler bolts. It looks like your boat has 2.5 inch shafts. Designing wheels is a science for sure they can make them for pulling power but you lose speed. Ones designed for speed don't have the thrust for towing. Osborne will set you guys up right. For your desired cruise speed and keep the Cummins at 1200-1300 rpm continous. I imagine you guys are after fuel economy. You can have the power when you are bucking tide or out run bad weather. Somebody is a brave lady painting the interprotect without a mask on. The smell of that stuff damn near killed me. I mixed one batch nope not using this stuff. I did some research and found Primocon works good I was really impressed with it. The stuff dries hard and sticks like sh*t to a blanket. I put 7 coats on the the 24 foot aluminum boat. The mufflers used on the old detroits going to be too much back pressure for the cummins? Boats are a labour of love lol. My opinion is do a good job the first go around sure makes a difference. Clean fuel is a must, the bio blend diesel fuel today is horrible crap. In my experience it clogs up fuel filters quicker in years past. I would have Racor on the day tank one for each engine. Then I'd have spin on filters on the engine. The Cummins are a little more sensitive to fuel quality compared to the green grenades. N65 injectors are tough. The 6.7 Cummins I assume you have to watch fuel restriction with high micron filters. I'd even consider having your fuel tanks polished seeing your building a whole new fuel system. A good piece of mind you are not going to have a big algae slug plugging up an outlet on one of your tanks.

Thanks for the comment! The boat had a 13' extension added some time in the 80's. It took us a bit to get used to for sure but we love it now. Its all storage and tankage back there. There is another 500 gallons of water and 1000 gallons of fuel back there. The only time we get rumbling back there is when the props start to get a bit dirty. Its hard to say what effects it has but theoretically it should give us a bit more speed. We really like Osborne. They repaired our props last time we were here and Jody was extremely helpful with sorting out the propping requirements for the repower. Our shafts are only 2.25" as the wheel sizes and HP levels are fairly small on this boat. The couplers on the new transmissions are a bit shocking as they have TWELVE M16 bolts for attachment! If those ever break we have big issues. Going off of previous engine performance we will be turning 1600 RPM at our continuous cruise speed with the new engines. The peak efficiency for them is somewhere around 1800 RPM. We are definitely after economy. Will be interesting to see where we end up. That Interprotect is nasty smelling stuff for sure. I give Janis trouble all the time about wearing a mask. She did use the Primocon this time around on the rudders though so we will see how that works out. The mufflers should be more than adequate for the new engines. If they could flow enough air for 14L 2 strokes they should be able to handle the Cummins. They are pretty massive and have large internal openings. We try to do it right the first time for sure. The cummins are incredibly sensitive to fuel quality for sure. I went with the larger of the spin on options to keep restriction to a minimum. The setup I have run should be better than what would have come on the OEM versions of these engines. I had debated running one of the DAHL filters per engine but I wanted to filter the crap out BEFORE it even made it to the day tanks. All of the fuel coming from the keel tanks MUST go through the pair of DAHL filters before it gets to the day tank. This setup will also allow me to polish the fuel in any tank as well. Me move fuel through the day tanks fairly regularly and the tank suction fittings are off the bottom so there isnt much of a change to get buildup in there. That being said I am adding inspection ports into the day tanks this time around to make sure the new fuel system is starting with a clean slate. The Fleetguard spin on filters have a pretty large crud holding capacity and also have water in fuel sensors built in which I have wired to the engine management for alarms. The remainder of the tanks are skin tanks with big access ports so I will be pulling those for inspection and cleaning before we leave on our big trip. Thanks for watching and maybe we will see you around.

Don't put them back aboard when there is really asbestos around the mufflers. You will get sorry because there will be a time you have to discard them and then your whole engine room will be contaminated.
@OnboardTangaroa
@OnboardTangaroa 7 күн бұрын
Only one was removed for access and it is already back aboard. Asbestos is fine as long as you can keep it encapsulated which is what we are doing. If they have to be removed at some point we will tackle that job at that point. Thanks for watching.

Thank you for the clarification. We will try to do better with that one. We did know that Tangaroa is the Maori god of the sea though. Janis and I became a couple while working aboard a yacht in your amazing part of the world. Funny enough, as tourists do, we purchased a wood effigy while we were there. We did not even know it was Tangaroa until after we had purchased and named our boat. Coincidence? Fate? Who knows? Thanks for watching!
