To make room for our Cummins Engines - we had to move our Lithium Battery Bank which is made up of 56 LiPo CALB batteries. CALB stands for Chinese Aviation Lithium Batteries and yes we got them from China and we have had NO issues with them.

Very interesting information about lithium batteries. Thank you for the video. No idea how you can keep track of what each little wire does in the engine room. Looks like there are hundreds of them and they all look the same.

I agree with you Blaine, I hate painting, and I'm terrible at it. Funny how I'd rather move a 56 cell battery bank from the engine room than repaint inside one cabinet, but I would. The only thing worse thank painting is revarnishing the teak railings and trim. Regarding the weight distribution, what do you figure your battery bank weighs? My bank made out of 300Ah cells is 5kG/cell and 12 cells, so only 60 kilos, not a big deal. I figure you must be about 3 kilos a cell. Definitely heavier, but only about as heavy as two men. Compared to the weight difference between your Detroit's and the Cummins it's probably a rounding error.

Painting really is the worst. I am lucky to have Janis. She is much better with all of the painting and varnishing stuff. According to battery specs the batteries are 5.6kg/cell so bank should weigh around 700 lbs. Not an inconsiderable amount of weight but it shouldn't be a big deal. The boat has always had a list to port so getting the batteries central will likely help.

It is important to do a first charge per group of 16 batteries with a good quality BMS in order to ensure the balance of charges and check that all the cells are correctly and equally charged. It's Lifepo4 batteries ?

Correct. This bank has been in service for 3 years. They were balanced when they were installed initially. The cells maintained their groupings when I moved them to their new location. Currently the cells are within .001v of each other. I use an Orion BMS2 for the BMS side of things. They are indeed LiFePo 4 cells. Thanks for watching!

How much heat will come off those batteries? Maybe keep your pilot house warm in the winter ? Or not that warm.

Honestly, with our usage they hardly warm up at all.

That's how most of the individual cells come. These have ridges on the side but all the new ones are smooth.

lots of areas are onow making rules to say battery banks have to be in sealed externally vented boxes

I haven't seen that come around the pipe yet for Lithium. I guess we will cross that bridge when we get to it. I could see it with lead acid as they off gas hydrogen but there is no off gassing with LiFePo batteries.

This is so dumb, literally no practical point or use for having that many batteries or even a system designed like that.
