This week we completely renovate our entire engine bay adding some amazing sound proof, fire retardant, self adhesive, foil backed foam taking it from looking awful to looking awesome!
Thanks for following our family on our sailing adventures.
We also reveal a bit of a worry, we're taking on water, it's definitely sea water, but we don't know how it's getting into the boat!
Although we don't ask anyone for money, people do ask us if there is a way they can help us keep making these videos.

Dang, that's quite a before and after on the engine area. What you did right: Engine room is quieter, you stopped leaks, your new lights consume much less electricity and are brighter against the silver, it's 100% cleaner, the panels are in 100% better shape. What you did wrong: nothing! Kudos for Melissa's stab at her new channel. As boat owners and full timers, you have a different perspective of what to look for and pros and cons a cons compared to a weekend warrior. As I always say, "Find a nitch, and build on that."

It seemed that your pre-insulation decibel reading may have been taken with the engine hatch open and post insulation was with it closed! Not to worry, the engine bay looks far better and it will definitely now be quieter than it was before.

@Sailingon That could be the case indeed. But per definition someone with a disability doesn't have to be less fortunate or be less joyfull in life. Not to say I don't understand what your saying. Thanks for your kind reply.
@jaygee5693
@jaygee5693 5 күн бұрын
@@junglist1 Surely you're aware that physical disability typically limits mobility and reduces earning ability. It potentially restricts the disabled person's access to many popular leisure pursuits, outdoor activities, travel etc. The sort of activities that greatly add to the quality of life, and the joys of life for an able-bodied person. James probably mentioned his disability, because it is one of the reasons the channel may be particularly enjoyable to him. Despite his physical limitation, confinement to a wheelchair possibly, he can vicariously enjoy this family's adventurous, active lifestyle. That would be so obvious to a normally empathetic person, that your "curiosity" does have at least a hint of meanness about it.

@jaygee5693 I'm fully aware as I'm a nurse myself. I work in psychiatric care and actually have a bunch of empathy for a lot of people, I wouldn't be able to do my job without it. Before my comment, or rather question gets taken out of context and people start making assumptions like you are starting to, I'll in short try and explain. The reason for my question is quite simple. I see a lot of comments, especially from Americans saying "a disabled veteran". There's a lot of disabled veterans in all regions of the world but I notice the Americans mention it more. There's no pun intended or any nasty reasoning behind my question like I said. I do however wonder how veterans are treated in America and have questions about the care they recieve that's all. That's why I asked an 'open' question without any prejudice. It's up to the person I asked the question to to elaborate or not.

Run some sound deadening along the top of the engine opening on the inside so that it hangs down about 50mm into the opening, when the door / hatch is closed up against it the gap will be sealed off, thus further reducing the racket.

Very nicely done on the insulation. I did mine and got similar results with a reduction of 10-15db at idle and 15-20 at cruise. It is still loud but no longer painfully so. The foam manufacturers strongly recommend putting the reflective tape over all foam edges so that it is covered on all sides to prevent the engine space fumes from reaching the foam. At the minimum it would be good to cover any exposed edge.

When you run the engine on a boat there are two sources of noise and vibration to consider: 1) the firing of the cylinders and 2) the impulses from the propeller blades. Both produce noise either from the engine directly or through transmission through the structure. Insulation and isolation are the primary methods of reduction. You can determine which (engine or propeller) is the source of noise throughout the boat by measuring governing frequencies; note sometimes this can be the second or third mode.
@SailingMelody
@SailingMelody 5 күн бұрын
That’s really interesting and absolutely correct. Over time we will identify where all the various little annoyances come from eh. Some of those sounds are just the boat talking to use. But a noisy diesel engine is not a noise I like

When you did your before sound test, you should have done it with the panel to the engine area in place to see how loud it was in that walkway. Obviously it would be louder with the panel off, but I would have been interested in knowing how loud it was with the panel on before the insulation was installed. In any case, it is quieter than it was.

You have to lose the aft mast and rigging and put on a solar canopy and hoist on the rear to lower your dinghy , it’s only a small yacht and you need room
@SailingMelody
@SailingMelody 3 күн бұрын
That’s 100% something we are strongly considering. Our plan is to use the boat as she is for two years before we make that very radical decision though. We’re not sure so we’re investing our time and efforts into other parts of the boat before making such a huge decision. They did do two versions of this boat and the other version was a single mast with more real estate on the aft deck so it would be consistent with the design but I have a suspicion the sloop version has a taller main mast which would mean it was prohibitively expensive to replace the main mast and suite of sails for a larger single rig. But I agree up to a point it’s something we plan to research and maybe implement in a few years

Comment about cockpit drains. Cockpit drains are invariably too small. I know Melody is centre cockpit and now has a hard dodger but even so, those drains look minuscule. Imagine taking a green one from over the side that half fills the cockpit well, it would drain but it might take a while during which time you are carrying an extra tonne of weight that alters your centre of gravity. I sail a 21' low freeboard with a stern cockpit, a wet boat is an understatement. It has a small cockpit well the size of a bath tub but even so I had to upgrade to 2 x 2" drains all through.

How can you claim on insurance for the diesel tank letting water in? Is that not just maintenance or failure. As it’s not caused by an accident like a grounding or anything. Wasn’t that leek there when you bought the boat? Just interested as I’d love to claim on insurance for upgrades / repair / maintenance type work. 👍🤣😂

Are there dyes that can be used to trace leaks? The DeGanwegians have rolled out the red carpet. ❤ Best of luck with the new in-laws! Mazel tov! 🎉 I guess the most important question is will you be voting for Count Binface? 😂

Don't know how much walkway gap you have but is there any way you could cut that panel in half and hinge it to access the engine?

Maybe a temporary fix but I was thinking some closed cell backer rod on that engine door gap would lower sound leak.

Not sure if noticed or care, but I think you just showed everyone your pin when you unlocked the phone.
