I just finished re-doing a boat the previous owner tried to seal with JB Weld. That stuff popped of the seams like it was nothing when I went after it. Had to remove all of that as well as the silicone they tried to seal it up with. What a mess. I painted every single rivet and seam with Gluvit. It's a bit spendy but completely worth it. Tough as nails when it sets and it finds it's way into every tiny crevice to seal them up for good. It's easy to work with too. Best stuff there is for sealing up those tin boats.

One way to find leaks in an old boat is to fill the boat with water, just be sure to have it supported well. If you have it on a trailer, block the trailer frame. This method works, been restoring boats for 20 years. Another way to fill holes and cracks is to use marine epoxy mixed with sawdust or other filler. Always sand aluminum, don't use scott bright, that will polish the metal.

What does blocking a trailer frame mean?
@robertrathert4435
@robertrathert4435 8 жыл бұрын
put concrete or wood blocks under the trailer to support the weight of the water that you put in the boat. it shouldn't take much to find the leaks.

Hi there yes block trailer up, fill with water then use a compressor and see if it bubbles. Water alone can sometimes push little bits of rubbish in.

I always put my phone into a waterproof case before going on the water, I've seen them for $5 on Amazon, my one cost $20 and it works just fine, I tested it by putting an old phone I had in it and putting it in a bucket of water overnight, the phone still worked just fine in the morning, I had to weight the case down in the bucket because the case floats. Nice work on the boat.

You can buy a hard plastic grinder wheel for cleaning aluminium without gouging it up . Another thing that cleans aluminum is Muriatic acid -It` actually for cleaning concrete but thin it cup acid to gallon water , That boat will shine like new nickle . Rinse it with cold water takes 10 min .

I would check for leaks and then replace the rivets. Looks like slopping that jb weld is like what brown people might do. But really you scrap it and buy a new aluminum 18 footer for $2,800 and be done with it.

Jb weld is fine for emergencies out at sea, but since the boat is on land and flipped over theres no excuse for not using some aluminum brazing rod and brazing it closed. Just make sure the area has a good semi rough finish and free of any oils, paint, or other contaminants before starting to braze. Once done file down any brazing high spots with a one or two inch wide steel file.....

I'm not seeing any former welds, this boat would not tig weld well. I've got one with the same and the welds look beautiful until you spray the welded area with a water hose: leaks through micro cracks, even after backing off puddle and slowly backing off power. Welded another boat with former welds, no leaks for three years. Possibly alumiweld HTS-375 II, even Harbor Freight alumiweld (both are aluminum solder) would work.

Nice video. I appreciate all the work you put into it. I would suggest staying away from JB weld because it can become brittle over time. I used G/Flex Epoxy. Its expensive but designed to flex and is perfect for aluminum boat repairs and leaks. You can use a hair dryer to warm it up and it make it run into the cracks and seams.

So faster way to do this job is 2 gallons of aircraft stripper. Alcoa Gutter sealer from the inside ... Strip both sides heat outside with propane torch . Drip seam sealer inside. As far as the back buy a rivet shaver and dome rivets and a shaver. All done 36 hours if your gonna paint it Red Scotch Brite choose your colors then shellac the top or just bare aluminum and shellac .... This way will take you 7-10 days

That jb weld will last good enough I'm sure. Just keep an eye on it, but looks like you did just fine. For seams I used to have a friend back up the rivets and I would hit them from the other side tightening them back up sometimes sealing a leak. For holes or cracks before I had a tig welder I would use a riveted patch and go around it with "Devcon" aluminum putty. That seamed to last for years and years and I even hit stumps with it. It's kinda like jb weld only I think better suited for aluminum and I felt like it was allot harder cure.

JB weld may react to the aluminum and cause it to oxidize (rust) due to the steel content of it. For your sake I hope I'm wrong. Let us know in a year from now how it worked out!

Also those stainless steel bolts you put in there might also cause you problems. You should look into what's called bi-metal corrosion. Also known as galvanic corrosion.
@malachy1847
@malachy1847 8 жыл бұрын
Don't shoot the messenger, but i think you might be the other way around.... Aluminium bolts or rivets on stainless may corrode due to galvanic corrosion ... where as marine grade stainless bolts are used to secure aluminium boat fittings, the likes of aluminum pulpits, deck rails, and winches where as ashore, same are in use bridge parapet guards and the like....
@mattroy3154

Not gonna shoot the messenger but I am going to throw the book at him: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanic_corrosion Deck rails and winches are fine but you wouldn't want any corrosion under freeboard even if just a little.

I'm not a scientist or claim to be, from what I read in you link it appears they are talking about mostly in salt water, causing the corrosion moistly ?

Kevin Robinson look it up it’s easy all you need is a torch and brazing rods. U heat up the boat in the area leaking and run the rod over it. It welds it basically but at lower temp then actually welding. 735 degree aluminum braising rods. The repair will last a life time.

jb weld? really? jb weld will not last long at all. it is not uv resistant, flexible and will crack right off under pressure. need marine grade sealant like 3m 4000 or 5200. also use an epoxy like gluvit and fibre glast 4118 to make your boat even and firm. also use herculiner not rustoleum truck bed liner. trust me, I did much of my HW. it's not worth doing it like this cause later your gona have to strip, sand and recover the leaks. double the work.

the little bit of pressure the boat is going to make isn't going to be no 4000psi which is what jb weld is rated for. and when it comes to it cracking it don't matter what you put on it because after a while its all going to have leaks again

JB weld is too stiff. I tried that on my starcraft for rivets 1st to quickly fix it so I wouldn't miss time. Unfortunately its too hard when dry. After 3 trips I was back to where I was originally. I found it will crack EASILY because the aluminum flexes. A better trick is use gutter seal. Im 7 years on some patches. It's rubberized but deals hard enough that it won't flake and peel. If you will be in rough water epoxy products WILL NOT LAST LONG. I run my boat (16 starcraft 1967) 35 miles offshore of NJ for shark and tuna.
