ALUMINUM CHRISTMAS TREES: A SYMBOL OF THE SPACE AGE In the 1960s, aluminum Christmas trees captured the excitement of the modern Space Age. Today, they are seen as fun, retro decorations, but they once represented futuristic holiday décor. The first successful aluminum tree, the Evergleam, was introduced in 1959 by the Aluminum Specialty Company in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Its popularity led to many brands offering trees in various colors and sizes. However, by the late 1960s, interest began to decline. The Evergleam was discontinued in the early 1970s - after nearly a million were made. Some historians believe the 1965 TV special "A Charlie Brown Christmas" played a role in this shift by promoting traditional symbols. Ultimately, Americans moved on to new decoration trends. This exhibit features 20 aluminum trees from the collection of Johnson County residents Steve and Mary Pruitt. Their festive decor can be seen throughout the front yard and inside the All-Electric House until January 4, 2025!

Our neighbors had one back in the early 60s. They set it up in front of their picture window and it had a flood light with a rotating multi-color wheel that would shine on it and change it from, red, blue and green.

That'd be neat to see. My favorite one here was the one that snows. They said it goes off at random, maybe every fifteen to thirty minutes. I wasn't sure which tree it was but then right as I was leaving it started to snow lol. Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas Spencer! Thank you for sharing this nostalgic video! I remember those quite well! Thankfully Mom and Dad never wanted those! We always had real trees early on then found a super nice artificial tree that we had for several years and it lasted too! Hope everyone in your Family is doing great! Mark in Iowa.
