I forgot to mention the heat gun was on the lowest setting. Although heating strings can change tuning the point was the neck was moving. That is what I was explaining that the neck should not move so dramatically. Update! The owner of Koloss called me. He said he is pulling the guitars down for sale untill the issue with the neck and bridge can be fixed. We discussed a way to make a new bridge and a headless neck with carbon fiber rod reinforcement. Up date. The owner of Koloss added carbon rods and increased the carbon fiber part of the neck. I tried the new neck and after months of playing it is better

It looks like the neck is made of injection molded carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic. This is much different than carbon fiber in the traditional sense. Traditional carbon fiber is comprised of a carbon fiber weave impregnated with a thermoset resin and processed in a autoclave. It's extremely stiff, has a low coefficient of thermal expansion, and has a great strength to weight ratio. This neck is probably comprised of an engineering grade thermoplastic (maybe nylon) reinforced with carbon fiber strands. The result is a neck with a big coefficient of thermal expansion and hence a neck that easily goes out of tune when temperatures change. It would be more accurate to say this guitar has a plastic neck than a carbon fiber neck.

I have to wonder if the heat gun represents a bit more thermal shock than an instrument can realistically take. I'm sure Phil noticed the problem in normal use and felt this was the best way to demonstrate it. Sill, even on the lowest setting I still think it would heat the neck up more quickly, and therefore unevenly, than any reasonable guitar situation. To be totally honest, I'm not sure how a wooden neck would fare in that situation.
@DrTacoPHD665
@DrTacoPHD665 3 жыл бұрын
Wood necks are more susceptible to changes from moisture, as opposed to temperature, although moisture content is linked to temperature in real circumstances. I would not expect a wood neck to change tuning that drastically with the heat gun, as plastics and polymers deform more under heating and would make sense being in a cheap carbon neck. Despite that, the heat gun demo is definitely just a conceptual proof rather than a definite "this thing sucks" statement. After all, if anybody has a heat gun and a (wooden neck) guitar, we could test it ourselves. I'm just missing the heat gun.

Thanks for the Review Phillip! I have seen a couple of other reviews of the Koloss kits, and each one had issues with the kits, and in each of those videos there were parts missing, usually screws and bolts, and, if I remember correctly, there was no instructions included, or they were very minimal. I have since visited the Koloss website and checked out finished models and kits. Many of their high end models were equipped with wooden necks, and some are quite expensive. There are a variety of kits available, which is most likely what I would first consider, that way I can personalize it to my own specifications, I could also save some money by excluding parts that I would rather avoid, particularly, since watching this video, the composite neck, and I would also prefer a completely different set of pickups than what they provide, ones that I have in other guitars of mine, so I could better assess how the aluminum body affects the sound, by having a benchmark to compare it to, like one of my Les Paul’s. I also may end up using a Warmoth neck, it is possible that the one you received has a different scale length than was designed for that bridge on that guitar, they also may have bolted on the wrong neck, obviously, the neck is defective, as you have demonstrated. I will be interested in seeing you review another one, after they have corrected the flaws. I think this is the first guitar review I have seen of yours, and it showed up in my recommended KZbin list, probably because of the other reviews I have watched. I found your review a very educational and fair assessment of the Koloss guitar, and I know that I am much more informed about this model, from watching your video, much more so, than from any of the other videos I have watched regarding this guitar. As a result, I have subscribed to your channel, and am looking forward to seeing other reviews. Thank you for posting this video! Please have an excellent and awesome day! 🙂

The issues is companies don't take the time, effort, expensive to research, develop and test said new product. And when I say test, in either a gun or guitar...spend time in all conditions. Put beta versions in people (experts) hands to use. Away from the facility. A friend of mine tested a rifle for a new company. And it was fine the first 700 rounds, but then big issues began to occur. The company said they put 10K rounds with no problems. The company did their round test in a controlled environment. Not in real world conditions per se. Thankfully the company took my friends advise and worked on the issues and the firearm turn out to be decent. I just started learning how to play guitar (I'm 55) and I watch Phil and others, so I can get an idea what to look for. Not planning on purchasing another guitar (YET) until I get much better. Only been taking lessons for six months. However, I understand the (good) addiction when it comes to gear...e.g., guitars, amps. I learn this addiction from my Dad, who got me my first firearm when I was 12.And I been hooked ever since. I have over 500 firearm's in my collection. For now my Squire Affinity (Tele) is serving me quite well. Due to Phil and others like Darrel Braun making suggestions. Only thing I did to the Tel, was have a professional Set-Up done. One day, I'm sure I will be able to conduct a set up on my own. But for now, I want to concentrate on learning how to play. I practice roughly an hour a day. Doing scales, some chords and notes. My teacher definitely knows when I didn't practice enough. When I go for my next lesson with her. Currently, really enjoy learning and hopefully in 18 mths from now, I'll be an okay player. THANK YOU PHIL, and His Audience for responding to my past comments. This community is just like the firearm's KZbin community. Always will to help out, regardless of your level.

Thanks for your balanced approach to criticism. This review gives the company something to work with. I think they were trying to implement the Brian Moore style input jack. (Btw, have you ever played or reviewed any Brian Moore equipment?) Thanks again.

I guess I got lucky i just got one from guitar center some kid ordered it put thicker strings on it and tuned it to c# i paid $300 for it took it home put 009s on it and the bridge went back to its normal position i played it for 4 hours and it feels great and sounds awesome I used the tremolo several times and it stayed in tune pretty well I don't doubt that people have possibly gotten some bad ones maybe they've improved them since then because mine is great

Just looking at this, it seems to me that the intent of that output jack is to be used with a right-angle plug. I always use the right-angle plug to avoid pulling it out or putting stress on the jack even on a strat.

Definitely need to get that neck sorted out. I'm wondering if wooden necks induce neck dive. If only the execution was as good as the concept. I know it would have to be a factory change, but what if they were to flip the jack and push it out toward the edge as far as possible to put it in line with the strap button?

This reminded me of why I would be a terrible product reviewer... I always try to see the good in even the most hopeless things and especially if I purchased something I dont think I can easily admit to myself I wasted the $. You did a great job demonstrating every flaw you found as you always do!

I have always been fascinated by carbon fiber acoustic guitars, Im not saying that they can't do it with electric but it seems like electric guitars are more durable in weather than acoustic. or am I just dumb?

2 years later, had 2 thoughts. would adjusting the truss rod to the point where it would take up the slack be possible? perhaps it could compensate or at least start to make a difference? Might be a decent experiment and its not a bad time to try, I've seen this video before when it was new so it’s possible that it hit the algorithm again. also...that name doesn’t really brim with confidence right? "koloss"? "K.O." "Loss"? was "EmbarassingFailure" too long? or was "TKO" taken?

The M4 Koloss kits have a standard 2-point Strat type bridge, a roasted maple 2 octave neck and decent passive pups. Got one coming this week. I am prepared to tackle issues should there be any. Will put it together and keep ya posted.

There's a few ways to do this for the neck. * Pre preg carbon layup on a mold. A neck like this shouldn't cost more then 300$ tops. Easy as crap to mass produce, and the Chinese are pretty good at this. * Use a core & do a reverse layup. Since you want strength as well you'd generally start with a kevlar, 4 carbon layers & finish with a carbon/kevlar hybrid. high strength & heat resistant and uv resistant for the outside. PMI foam would work great for this. Kevlar honeycomb if money is no issue. You can pretty much push this as far as you want by even changing the resins for maximum effect. The BIGGEST and only problem with hand lay up like this would be the curing time. And that's only building the actual neck. Finishing still requires multiple layers with curing, sanding, wetsanding, and polishing.

@@georgepaschalidis9840 I agree and its ridiculous tho that people buy into these facades that you either have to deck it or buy a 150+ trem. Got a mim and a squire both floating and both can be beat on like they stole money and it keeps tune.

Thanks for being transparent about this, Phil. That's a horrible guitar for the flaws you mentioned, which are not minor. I hope Koloss takes this to heart and improves it so quality is higher and consistent. It's an appealing concept for an aluminum/carbon guitar, but not when it's like that.
