For those of you who don't want to put out for lighting....the light that comes with it is pretty good if you pull the yellow end cap off and REMOVE THE WHITE INSERT BLOCKING THE LIGHT. Put the yellow end cap back on and you're good to go.

What about just adding another layer of foam so that it is thicker and helps seal the trap door better, instead of messing with the hinge and grinding the uneven edge of the trap door frame.?

Did anyone mention acorn nuts for the bolts sticking out? Couple of washers if needed and the sharp bolt ends turned in to nice looking smooth acorn nuts. Kinda spendy for the nuts though.
@LS119713 жыл бұрын
I just ground all mine flush with the nut so I wouldn't snag my clothing on them. Repainted my blast cabinet along with the hardware since it was old and faded anyway when I did this mod on my cabinet. I did not use the Tacoma company parts since they are pretty expensive for their kit. Most the parts I just made myself or bought and saved myself $200-$350 not buying the kit.

I know this video is a little older now and I understand not using the foam, but using the thinner tape makes even less sense if you are just going to caulk the edges... Seems it would make more sense to assemble the bolts loosely, caulk in between the panels, and then once it is together put another bead of caulk on the inner seam and smoothing it down....
@neilchittendon36064 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I did putting mine together. The thinner tape just seemed tedious, and once the caulk was applied, redundant.

You might want to mention if it hasn't already been said. The Roof Calking you suggest using takes A WEEK to dry before you can paint it. Maybe that's why you never painted yours in the video. My bad for not checking the tube but 24 hours later it's still wet and messy as hell. I don't really understand the reason behind the roof cement over a good quality paintable silicon. Now I have to set everything aside for a week before I can continue with the build.

I appreciate you taking time to describe the details how to modify the instructions for assembly and improve the function of this kit but SERIOUSLY... 28 minutes before you even have the first pieces put together!!! Is there somewhere to find some modified instructions or some time parks to speed this up?!?!?! After the 17th time explaining putting tape on the flanges, I think I was ready to move on to the next step.
@carlosmurphy4u18 жыл бұрын
I sealed all my seams from the inside but for the hopper to the bottom of the cabinet, I used the silicone calk. For mounting the window frame I used nut-certs / riv-nuts (got the kit from H.F.) 8x32 and for the legs I used 1/4x20, you'll be glad you did cuz all them nuts and washers are a real pain!

looks like your vacuum attachment would be more secure if you put the big cap on from the inside of the blast box, that way the weight of the hose would help keep it in place instead of pulling it loose.

I initially had two questions regarding the "trap door" but you obviously already answered one when you simply opened the trap to tighten the screws. The other is about the mod of the hinge for the trap door. It appears that the door can be removed by simply taking out the bolt that serves as the pivot of the hinge. Would it not be easier to simply remove the bolt and either continue the roll of the metal that holds the bolt in place with a few taps of a hammer or alternatively just squeeze it a bit in a vise to decrease the distance from the floor of the door face to the radius of the bolt tube? Great video either way. Thanks BTW, you held out way longer than I could have before strapping on the knee pads.
@AMetalWorks8 жыл бұрын
+buzzsaw ncgo Basically do whatever is easiest for you on the hinge. The goal is to just get it to seal better. And trust me those knee pads are a life saver. I bought them for work and even with them I end out in pain after a whole days crammed up in an engine compartment in a boat.

Thanks for taking the time to do these. It's obvious you were determined to do the upgrade and mods the right way. But, please, please shorten and be more brief with your vids... It took longer to watch them than it did to assemble mine!. As others have already noted.. the Locktite PL takes days to set up. Don't expect to load it with abrasive and use it in a day or two. Heat really doesn't help it cure either. Plan or 3-4 days at least to set up. A week if you want to paint it.

Well, the picture in the instructions shows the lower support shelf deal installed with the lip up. I thought about that for a bit and decided that I would keep the lip up, that way if sand falls through anything that I didn't caulk very well then I could just vacuum it off the shelf instead of it all falling onto my floor. I don't know, maybe I'll flip it over after using it a few times. Lol

so after watching vid 1 & 2 i took my cabinet back to trade it for one with all the parts. got the second one home and the same thing. no double sided tape only 14 bolts for the hopper instead of 22 and the packaging is nothing like the amazing packing you have. the legs where stacked on each other. the glove brace was just in there. the parts boz is way smaller and the nicely package bolt container you have beats my tiny zip lock bags staple to cardboard. now i have to buy extra bolts and cut the hopper bolts down because they are 1 1/2 inches long. not looking good. but love the video.

The part about different cabinets changing out media etc being expensive... If you are doing this as a "job" or very long project. It could actually be cheaper in time investment to have multiple cabinets setup and only keep a certain type of media in that specific cabinet. Setting it up so the media is reusable as much as possible can be tricky to dial in. If it's a job then it will pay for itself in time saved pretty quickly. If it's a project, you can just sell all of them, or a few of them once it's done and recoup a good portion of the money invested in it. The only reason not to have multiple cabinets, or multiple setups tailored to specific blast media is floor/shelf space. The money factor is based on how much you value your time. If you value your time at say $20 an hour, it would take 10 hours time saved over the life of the project/job to pay for a new basic cabinet. If you value your time at say $50 an hour then just 4 hours saved time. Changing out media doesn't take a really long time but dialing it in properly, the right air pressures at the inlet/outlet for the type of media can be more difficult for some people. Not to mention losses in media via cross contamination, etc can eat into it as well. You can also weight it by factoring in how much you like/dislike changing/setting up different media. A professional shop that does this day in day out, and has the floor space for it should never have to change media.

@AMetalWorks8 жыл бұрын
Did you buy better media? Just in case you didn't know. High PSI in a blast cabinet destroys the blast media. Especially if you are using a glass abrasive. It turns it to dust and can clog up the vacuum system.

Hi Rafael, I just picked up my cabinet and am starting the assembly. Mike at Tacoma is out this week. I was wondering when you put the bottom(funnel) on the upper cabinet you used the foam tape. Wouldn't that also "pillow" like the bottom? wondering why we wouldn't want to use caulking there as well?? I was going to ask Mike but since he is out i thought i would ask you. Also no caulking on the upper pieces either?
@AMetalWorks7 жыл бұрын
There is going to be significant gaps due to the way the panels are put together. The tape helps seal those gaps. Calk would more than likely be fine too. That extra flange also helps with pillowing.
@AMetalWorks7 жыл бұрын
Plus the clean up will suck. You need to make sure the hopper is perfectly centered. That will require some on the fly adjustments that will smear around calk and make a mess.

Ok, so I have watched the hole series and besides being a little long winded they are a great plethora of info on these cabinets. I have watched all of your videos as well as a few others and taken the best of all of them and constructed my cabinet but I just have to leave this comment for future people watching and assembling their cabinets according to this video. I would highly suggest NOT trying to glue the backer ring to the lip of the hopper. I understand how it might add just a little more support if it glues down perfectly but these cabinets are manufactured in china and the rings are not always as square as the hopper and the holes wont line up nor will the ring stay laid in place until the glue dries without popping out of place 50x. I spent an hour on my hands and knees with a handful of terry cloth towels cleaning the roofing mastic off of the hopper and ring and i can honestly say it is one step i wish i had skipped from the get go. Also I only needed one tube of mastic to seal the ENTIRE cabinet( I bought two, overthinking things) even with the mess on the hopper and ring. Be sparing with the mastic and if you want to make some really nice seams put blue painters tape about 3/8-1/2 inch away from all corners on each side inside the hopper and cabinet and pull it off while its still wet after you have smeared the mastic in the corners with your finger(WEAR NITRILE GLOVES, this stuff is a nightmare to get off skin and clothes). Dont forget to seal all of the corners in the upper part of the cabinet. Also dont forget to get like the 3M double stick tape for the seems of the upper part of the cabinet. he only breafly talks about it for a few seconds and I removed the foam but didnt realize i was supposed to replace it and assembled my cabinet without it. hopefully the mastic i put in the corners will be enough...
@molivroman98064 жыл бұрын
thanks Cody. Yesterday at the end of the day assembling the hopper, He said make sure the holes line up on the ring. No way, I do not know how his lined up. There are too many variables in the construction of the hopper for alignment. Like I said, I was tired and tried to match up. I started to just seal the ring and throw it on there and later use a step up drill and open the holes but I shut down and slept on it. So glad to read your post. I think it maybe the only one on here with that subject. So (with that being said) I will delete the ring but I fear down the road the cabinet will probably not line up. Also, this fellow spent a lot of time doing this video, did a very good job, and deserves a pat on the back or a discount from "Mike". Not that you were negative in any way as others I have read. Question about the sealant you used. I have used the same caulking and this stuff does not seem to dry. Any idea of what I can do to help it dry faster?

Jerry Konkle not sure what the issue is. It dried for me.

I finally started building this cabinet. Is it just me or does that roofing poly smell like chocolate sauce??

How much for the Tacoma upgrade?
@AMetalWorks8 жыл бұрын
+av8or4951 It depends on the kit and the options. You're best bet is to call Mike and talk to him. Let him know what your needs are and go from there. I believe the base kit is prices at $275 but don't hold me to that price. Call him and get the exact numbers.

+Alvarez Metal Works Thanks Man!. I got the same cabinet as you, still in the box until spring.

Awesome. You'll be very please with the upgrades and the mods when you build yours.

+Alvarez Metal Works still watching your video and you might want to look up the "Dust Deputy". I got one and it works great.

+av8or4951 That is exactly what I have planned to buy for this. We use them at my day job and they work great. A bit pricey but they are really nice. Plus they are local here in NY.

This being said. You've Lost your Mind!.. Bolts ground, door not sealing good, I mean C'mon, fix the real issues!

This is a cheap blast cabinet. Worrying about a tiny amount of media getting stuck on a small lip is silly. These cabinets hold 40lbs of media if you care that much add a smidge over 40 lbs to account for the ledge amount.

Your not marketing these videos to preschoolers, anyone doing this probably has some mechanical skills. The videos would roll much better if you keep this in mind. I assume you have friends, is this how you would talk to them ? I hope not.
