Older video, but if you take the screws and install them from the inside out and use nuts to secure them in place on the outside before installing the foam tape, then you can remove the glass without ever having to tighten any nuts inside the cabinet. And then you merely use wing nuts to tighten the glass on from the outside. So easy and never have to mess with tightening anything from the inside and outside at the same time ever again...

I will modify mind with “RIVNUTS” then use the foam tape as before. The rivnut is a threaded insert that is squeezed in the cabinet. Then you don’t need a backup nut. Just screw in the top panel. You can get the rivnuts and the rivnut puller at home depot.

Suggestion: after cleaning the glass, use a paste wax on the surfaces, being sure to remove excess with a clean buffing cloth or 2. This will remove any streaks making visibility the best and it will reduce the amount of dust clinging to the surface. I do this for my car on the interior and it keeps them from fogging up on those cool mornings.

Paul Straney nice tip! Always do that to the car but never thought of using that on the glass on my blast cabinet. Thanks!

I'd put 1/4-20 nutserts on the cabinet instead of hassling with trying to hold nuts in place on the inside of the cabinet. Nutserts are installed like threaded rivets. Harbor Freight carries a decent kit. They call it a "Threaded Insert Riveter Kit". Less than $20 with a 20% off coupon and definitely worth the investment.

I did this with mine but used M4 nutserts which is what the stock screws are. Then got some M4 x 30mm thumb screws. 1/4-20 would be overkill.

Good video btw the best way to clean glass is using a Squeegee as they method wipes away any dust that may be on it thats how window tinkers do it so nothing is trapped between the film and glass thanks for all the additional info and links on these cabinets i’m between homes at the moment but i’m pretty sure i’m going to set up one of these blast cabinets for working on my Vintage automobiles and motor boats plus i want to get a vinyl plotter and cutter and i always wanted to try glass etching for some of the custom Woodworking i do

I installed 14 - 20 Rivnuts in the cabinet an used 1/4 - 20 X 1 steel bolts with washers to mount the 2 panes of glass and retainer.

So how well does this glass work? I'm nearing the end of my stack of original films and need to figure out if I'm going to do this or...Something else. When I built my cab, I enlarged the holes and put rivnuts there, then loctited bolts sticking up through the top of the cab from the inside...Keeps the glass from coming off that way, and I just use some thumb nuts on top of the retainer to keep everything snug. Works like a charm, can change the whole deal without having to reach inside the cabinet, etc. Might be worth looking in to.

put the correct size socket on a nut driver and hold it with the left glove, it took me about 3 sec to figure that out. lol

+1970chevelle396 yup. Short Chinese person with little hands too lol. I'll be addressing all of these issues. Give than I'm tall I need to raise mine about 8 inches. At the very least it needs to go up 6 inches. My hands fit in the gloves but they won't last long wish my paws fighting in and out of them.

Pretty cool. I think what I'm going to do is get with Tacoma and grab a bunch of stuff. I have a couple sheets of 20 out in the shop that are getting bored.I think I'll do the metal cabinet on my own.4 pieces with a top and door.Overlapped corners, spot welded. It'll keep me out of the bar.........at least until after 2:00 ;-)

The flanges for your gloves are on wrong If you reverse them you can install gloves from the outside and your gloves won’t come off accidentally
@AMetalWorks
@AMetalWorks 6 жыл бұрын
Not installed "wrong" This is how HF designed it. Now your thought process seems logical and might be a good idea for a mod.

What if you take out a glove to access the window screws / bolts then your arm doesn't need to be so long. although it's nice to have time with a family member too :) thanks for the good video series.

They are on as per the HF instructions. But you made a good point. Reversing the sleeve would work nicely. I will keep that in mind when the time comes to change out gloves. Im not going in there again unless i have to.

why the two sheets of glass instead of one?
@AMetalWorks
@AMetalWorks Жыл бұрын
The top glass is a safety glass. The one exposed to the media is a super cheap picture fram glass because it gets eatten up by the blast media. You don't want the safety glass ruined and you don't want to use picture fram glass without the safety glass on top. It breaks way to easy.

The single pane glass does it need to be tempered?
@AMetalWorks
@AMetalWorks 4 жыл бұрын
No. It's sacrificial not for safety. As stated in the video, plastic creates static and the dust sticks to it. Real glass is cheap and doesn't have that problem.
