Dwight Howard or as he was called throughout his NBA Career, Superman. The #1 Overall pick of the 2004 NBA Draft Class, owner of 3 DPOY titles, 8x NBA All Star and 8x All NBA Member, 5x All Defensive Member, 5x Rebounding Champ, 2x Block Champion, and finally in the twilight of his career a 1x NBA Champion with the Los Angeles Lakers. However after the 2021-22 NBA Season he is currently out of a NBA Job and playing in Taiwan and possibly not getting another NBA Opportunity. Dwight Howard's career has come with alot of questions, why is he out of the NBA? Why isn’t he in the NBA’s Top 75 Players of All Time List and why did he go into a carousel of teams in the 2nd half of his career? Dwight Howard was meant to do way more in his NBA career than he already has done, but after his stint with the Houston Rockets and James Harden that ended with not much merit to him, he went into obscurity for the most part and slowly became less and less relevant as a player. But why? Well that is something we’ll be studying on this video in 3 parts, first his time in Orlando that made him the player he was, the 2nd in what I’ll call his final chances in LA or Houston, and finally the journey across the NBA he had in his 30s where we would truly see Dwight Howard's Fall from Grace.
Chapters:

People hated my theory about DHoward but i've always maintained it. I don't think he wanted to play basketball as a career. I think he recognized he was great at it and knew it would get him a bunch of money and fame but i think if you removed him from the spotlight, expectations, setting his family up, etc. and simply asked him what he wanted to be? I don't think he'd ever say basketball player.

It is such a travesty Dwight Howard is not on the NBA 75 team. He needs to be in it over some old nba players(not disrespect to them, they certainly deserved to make the hall of fame) who haven't accomplished as much as Dwight Howard. I am so glad Dwight Howard is an nba champion. Even though he did as a role player, it still will make him at least known as a player who will retire with a ring and will not be ringless.

Should’ve stayed with the Lakers and accepted his role at least. Then he would’ve still been there when Lebron came. Probably would’ve won with Kobe had that happened too. Regardless he’s played more high leverage games than Lillard and led teams further than Davis. And more dominant than both.

He was a player who relied heavily on his athleticism...then his back blew out while he was still in his prime and he seemingly refused to integrate more moves and skills into his game despite being capable of doing so (at least according to both Hakeem and Kareem who worked with him and said he could do a lot of things in practice that he seemed to either forget how or refused to do in games) and then the game evolved beyond him where modern big men are expected to do much more than Dwight is capable of

Going into the video, my thought was, "Self-inflicted, didn't show much growth as a player as he matured and his lack of maturity gave most other players looking to contend serious pause." I left the video with the same opinion, but wondering his lack of development and the other stuff went unaddressed in this video. Dude worked with Hakeem for months during the summers and he showed back up with more confidence in his post game, but still basically only had the same spotty right handed hook or dunks. And his play isn't like the ideal big of today. Picks are often set much further out than they used to be. If the only threat is a roll, not a pop or pass, you'll see a defender help down from the wing and he wasn't the same athletic freak he was by the time he hit Houston. To compound issues, it wasn't just touches he was demanding more of. It was touches in the post. You don't need to demand more touches as the roll man. You free yourself up and you'll get the ball more often than not. You can't feed what isn't there. The issue I see with him being in the league today is he would be in that mentor role. He's not the guy you want mentoring your young guys. Guys like Chris Kaman were able to stick around the league as long as they did bc their skillset wasn't based on things you can't teach and he was a positive role model and actively took young guys under his wing and taught them how to be professionals. People would still pay Vince Carter to play bc he was that elite prospect with supernatural athleticism, he was the super star, he had playoff experience, he expanded his game so when his athleticism faded he could still score at all 3 levels, he became a role player, bench guy, etc and he made big mistakes in his career and learned from them. Very little of that would apply to Dwight. When you look at Deandre Jordan, he too has advantages Dwight doesn't have. The actual size disparity is larger than it is on paper bc most people around the game believe he's 6'9" if he's anything. While you can't teach athleticism, you also can't teach size and Deandre is taller and longer. And unlike Dwight, he's going to have a more relatable path to the NBA. He was a 2nd rounder, he was never the second coming of anyone, and while he became a star he was always a role player. He is the personification of be a star in your role. Everything he achieved, he achieved it by doing what was best for everyone. He did ask for more touches, and Doc s response was almost identical to what I said about feeding the roll guy. Unlike Dwight, who took his ball and went home, Jordan re-signed despite that and having agreed to a contract w/ the Mavs. Deandre is much more the guy teams would want their players to model themselves after than Dwight. If they were otherwise identical players, teams are still going to choose Deandre over Dwight due to how he has handled himself.

Watching this I can't help but imagine what could have happened if Dwight went to Golden State in 2013 instead of Houston. If his feelings were "I'm not happy, Kobe is mean to me, this isn't winning, and it sucks." Golden State could have been a better fit. They definitely could have made use of him in Bogut's place. Steph and Klay are two equally laid back and fun loving guys in the earliest stages of their careers. I'm not sure how Dwight would have done in the GSW motion offense, but I would imagine he would have more success after 2014 than he did in Houston, especially given how the offense had to run through Harden in Houston, but in Golden State, Steph and Klay work best off the ball. They definitely miss out on KD if they pick him up, but I can only imagine if they found a way to make it work.
