I have always taken this song to be a sad characterization of a person the singer knows. A selfish person, who thrusts away people who love him, and embraces people that don’t care about him. A person who uses others and is used by others. For that reason, she is singing this song, talking about how she won’t be caught up in his downward spiral into making terrible choices anymore. When the wheels finally come off and he crashes, she’ll be so far above it (in outer space), it can’t possibly effect her anymore. Further, I suspect the person this is about is a drug user “you can’t even feel your face” a common description for people who are too high. The conclusion of the song, sadly, damningly, is just the word take, a one word epithet of her entire feelings on him.

I gotta say, I always saw this as a straight up acknowledgment of how horrible and stupid human beings are. Who cant identify with the fact that we dont have any time for the wonderful person standing next to us who would just be such an amazing partner, and instead chase after toxic people who we know will never love us back. We use that best friend who we know will always be there for us no questions asked when we inevitably get our heartbroken by the one who never will love us. This is like the basis for every rom com and many songs ("Why not me" the Judds etc etc). What I like about Alvvays take on it (if im right...but the lyrics are pretty explicit, right?) is the juxtaposition of the acts next to each other. Its pretty in your face, and Im not 100 percent sure who wrote the lyrics. But I feel like whoever did is writing from the perspective of someone who has been there, done that...who has Lied to the ones who loved them, and layed with the one who (they know) wont. By the way, I have a very old tattoo that says "Things Fall Apart". Goddamn do I wish it said "Nothing Ever Falls In Place", the best lament on a lament filled album. Its a pretty universal shame when you look back on acting thus, and this song evokes that feeling in me in the very best way. One of my fav songs off the album...if only Atop a Cake wasnt SO GOOD
