The Dalai Lama wrote in his book The Path to Enlightenment: The problem with the practice of seeing everything the guru does as perfect is that it very easily turns to poison for both the guru and the disciple. Therefore, whenever I teach this practice, I always advocate that the tradition of “every action seen as perfect” not be stressed. Should the guru manifest un-dharmic qualities or give teachings contradicting dharma, the instruction on seeing the spiritual master as perfect must give way to reason and dharma wisdom. I could think to myself, “They all see me as a Buddha, and therefore will accept anything I tell them.” Too much faith and imputed purity of perception can quite easily turn things rotten.

The Dalai Lama often warns people off from this misbegotten idea that one should do anything the guru says and does as correct and exemplary. He even said that Sogyal Rinpoche should have been arrested. In Tibet and India, the average length of time one watches and considers a potential guru is 18 years before asking to become his student. We in the West are impetuous and greedy for attainment. This leads some people into very bad situations because they wanted connection to a guru before it was propitious and more than they really wanted learning. Practice is everything.

When Kusum Lingpa came to NYC I was totally turned off by his vulgarity and greed. I attended a few things and then gave up on him. I no longer heard of him until 20 years latter when out of the blue for some reason I got an email saying that he was going to give his last teaching in America, and it was five minutes away from my house in Queens, so II decided to go. When I got there he was dressed in a Hawaiian shirt, leaning back in a chair talking crap about another lama. He said that the lama was a hermaphrodite, and that we should look under his robe to find out for ourselves blah, blah, blah, which is exactly why I hadn't seen him in 20 years. I felt like leaving right away, but stayed since I was already there. Then he said OK, now it's time for the empowerment and he made a mockery of the whole process. Then at the end he said OK that's it give me all your money and leave. I was heading towards the door when he said hold on a minute I forgot something. Sit down and meditate. Everyone sat down, went into meditation and I just casually stood there and observed. Kusum Lingpa then sat up in his chair, straightened his back, went into meditation and from his forehead blasted everyone out with light. I immediately said to myself oh, now I understand, and immediately repented. I'm so thankful I got a chance to repent before he left.

What does a light have to do with the fact that he was a vulgar person. He was still imbued with raga, dosa, and moha and a forehead light shouldn't fool anyone.

Ah but what happens when the guru throws your life away? How can you stay? Even when united in a subtle way? Is it your fate to make your guru irate when it's too late?

@@DharmaTime-is-now Yet there is no real way to make the change after spending most of ones life with such a perfected master on the path of guru yoga only superficially. Then there is the complication of level of attainment through meditation on their form and practices given by such a perfected being and the pitfalls of being from another more distant culture or not having sufficient financial resources in exchange and some are used as a sacrifice such as women. To find a master more perfect willing to retrieve the spiritual force of the student is another matter all together but if one can survive such a trial can be truly liberating. Finally for the truly enlightened being willing to enter the low hell realms is the way to test their mind because if they're truly free they will be able to rise out of it in due time. This is one of the excuses the master uses the student that it's good for them. A whole compendium can be written on different levels of attainment, secret practice of tantra and mastery of all the directions. But nobody would listen even though the result is truly becoming the Buddha and saving the earth from great calamity, and the forming or rejuvenation of celestial beings through the Vajra Body....

This is such a western (particularly American) question to ask. It really shows a lack of understanding of the Guru-Disciple relationship from the get-go, and why Westerners have such a hard time with it. This is why Rinpoche couldnʻt even understand the question. Even the question and *how* he asks the questions, really shows a lot of ignorance, delusion and misunderstanding: “So, is taking on a guru simply a matter of taking on certain vows” - as if it is as casual as ordering vegetarian over pepperoni pizza. Taking that vow is ALL there is.
