To my ear, and I listened carefully, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche is speaking specifically to these parents about a very specific 7 year old and giving information that is specific to this situation. He is cautioning them to be careful and is providing sensible advice on how to best raise the child for optimal mental and emotional health. In the channel notes from the person who “leaked” this video - he/she called Tulkus a “strange phenomenon”. It’s not a Western phenomenon - but calling it “strange” is just a cultural bias/judgement. Also labeling RInpoche’s feelings as “hollow” is quite a projection. Nothing has been “leaked” here except for a very wise person giving specific advice to a family raising a child who has been recognized as a Tulku. And his advice seems very compassionate and sensible.

Interesting. I do research on Vajrayana Buddhism in Bihar. You must remember in ancient Times Bihar and the Indian planes was dangerous for Tibetans and wasn't conducive for them to goroaming all over India. Basically all the Vajrayana Indian Mahasiddhas were bunched in one area in Bihar. Ancient Tibetans knew the route there and back. This happens to be in Lakhisarai District of Bihar. You should visit Kajra in Lakhisarai District of Bihar. Kajra has been mispronounced in various ways by different ancient Tibetansn. Kajra was mispronounced as Kagyu, Kajra was mispronounced as Jagora in the Tilopa story, and Chakthani as Chativavo, In the Vajravarahi story Kajra is mispronounced as the pure land of Kijila, in the Shambhala story Kajra is mispronounced as Kalapa, and the Jhana river was mispronounced as Jonang school of thought. Kajra has several dakinis as deities, and next to Kajra is Narottimpur village where Naropa stayed when he was northern gate of Vikramshila. Kajra is the victory band around Atisha's palace, and near Kajra are two villages with Tibetan names. They are Marpa Khurd and Marpa Kalan in the name of and incient Tibetan called Marpa. Next to Kajra is the Kalchakra stupa where the Buddha imparted the Kalchakra teachings. And next to the stupa is a huge mud mound which has the three dimensional Kalchakra Mandala. The lovely part the area around the Kalchakra Mandala is in Atisas name. Your holiness, you should visit Kajra in your life. Because the concept of the Dalai Lama being an incarnation of Avalokiteshwar started on the Potala hill which is just behind Kajra town. Close to Kajra are Urain mispronounced as Urgain in the Tibetan seven line prayer. Northwest of Urain is Dhanari lake which Tibetans call Lake Dhanakosha. Southwest of Dhanari lake is Sahur again mispronounced as Zahor by Tibetans. Sahur/Zahor has a dakini temple who undoubtedly is Mandarva. Please view the video, ‘Padmasambhava’s life in India. (2)’.

buddhistleaks, you (and whomever "we" is) are on the wrong track with the title for this video (and perhaps your intent), and that's not helpful on any level. The information and topic Rinpoche is discussing is not a "leak", it's from some talks he's given openly to the public. He's been clear and outspoken about his opinion of the tulku system for many, many years, and he's certainly in a position to know what he's talking about. Your title is click bait at the very least, and at the worst, could confuse others about what the truth is, what Rinpoche's intent is, and more. If you don't want to mislead (and possibly hurt) others with future posts, you need to rethink your tactics. There are helpful ways to show concerns you may have about how a spiritual teaching or spiritual teachers, lamas, masters, etc. have done things over the centuries and are doing them today, including working inside and outside of the tulku system, but this is not it.

😮😮😮😮?????????????😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮 I think he had been disliked his own status as a Jamyang khentse rinpoche, and he must had been throughout unhappy in his monastery all his teenage years he had been spended in his monastery. He must had felt absolutely unhappy childhood, but he is forgetting what he is now is because of the teachings he got from his monastery, and from his mentor or teacher. I don't get it , what he is trying to saying on this topic. Sounds like he is regretting that he became a Tulku, its time to get a new lay people's name and change his religion is better for his coming years ahead and so on. It's so sad that he had gone through so much while he is in his monastery. Hope may his life be more free in lay peoples life.😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

He wasn't 'caught' this is a publicly obtainable video in which he expresses his own ideas on a very reasonable and compassionate approach to the question of choosing a Tulku. Great respect for this Lama. The only question is here is whether he gave consent for recording, and for sharing publicly the recording. Either way There is nothing in this vid that he would not say publicly, because this guy is too smart and genuine. If Rinpoche does not consent to having this enlightened speech, that was probably given as private advice to some parents, it should be removed. I am sure however that Rinpoche would consent to this talk being public as it can be useful to many other parents who think may have produced a tulku.

I never blindly believe that "find the reincarnation " thing. Maybe true maybe not. Because padmasambhava and many masters said " Recognize your inherent Buddha nature, your real nature, awareness itself. That's the point ( or supposed to be) to wake up to non conceptual Awareness ( see rigpa, Dharmakaya, etc ) mind essence. Rituals help, mantras are awesome but we must recognize our true Being. AND if the Tulku is so high level he will benefit beings even if he is a dishwasher! 😊☺

He is well-known as a critic of the Tulku system, even though he is one of them. Vajrayana Buddhism will have to change. If it is to survive into the future, the system will have to become more Democratic. Democracy is completely true to the esence of the Buddha Dharma.
@kagyu1

We have secular religion in the US, some call it Progressivism etc. There are beliefs within it ,that must never be questioned just like a belief religion even if they are without basis. Some are integrating this into Vajrayana, future generations will have to weed it out. This is not a judgement of someones subjective belief system, but an observation of humans trying to validate a particular set of current cultural conceptions by merging it with Buddhism. It seems to be very human. As Shamanism mixed with Buddhism in Tibet, the culture war has entered the Buddha communities. I heard a lecture full of far left talking points saying that these beliefs must be taken up as dogma by Vajrayana practitioners. She didn't use the word dogma, but what she was teaching was modern dogma. The Tulku system was Tibetan Dogma and was abused ( and still is ) for profit and gain. We have our own , but can't see it. It's what I love about the good Rinpoche's , they casually toss it at our feet and we have to see our own subjectivity. This one especially.

Rinpoche is neither pro-democracy nor against it. He persistently writes in his many posts that democracy like all human systems has loopholes and cracks. It’s better to have a birds eye view of every situation rather than being pro-this or anti-this, rather than trying to put everything into a category to see things without bias to one set of beliefs over another.

Rinpoche having been treated as a Tulku yourself, we know you have first-hand experience about how you feel Tulkus have been treated. You do not have to be Mahasiddha to know how you have been treated and how that bears fruit and results. Karmapa 16 was very skillful in his continuation to Karmapa 17! His prediction letter Karmapa entrusted to HH Situ Rinpoche and enshrouded the prediction letter in a cloak of secrecy. When Karmapa gave this letter to Situ Rinpoche, Karmapa 16 told Situ Rinpoche to “Keep this close to your body because it would be very important in the future.” After Karmapa’s Parinirvana, Situ Rinpoche searched for 10 or 15 years asking everybody if Karmapa had left them with something. After searching everywhere, Situ remembered that Karmapa 16 had given him something. So funny that Rinpoche was searching everywhere while all along it was actually “right under his nose”! Like the Nature of Mind it was “too close and too simple”! Searching for the prediction letter gave K17 time to grow up with his family although signs at the time of K17's birth all the local families knew that this was a “special” rebirth. Knowing that the modern man would be very skeptical about not only reincarnation but also the continuation of the same stream of consciousness from one life to the next, Karmapa was so skillful that his new incarnation, K17, looks extremely similar to his prior incarnation, K16. For me, this removed all doubt! ☸

I have long harboured my own skeptical feelings about the tulku system. I have no doubt that some Tibetan lamas consciously reincarnate as certain individuals. But I think the number is smaller than Tibetan Buddhism maintains. Is the 17th Karmapa the reincarnation, or A reincarnation, of the 16th Karmapa? Yes. Was Chogyam Trungpa the reincarnation of the previous Trunpgas? Ehhh...I have my doubts. Certainly, early on he was recognized as being different from the previous Trungpa tulkus. But that doesn't mean he _was_ one of them. He may have just been a dude, educated in the Tibetan system, and that's the end of it. A degree of spiritual power, probably passed down from past lives, but...a lot of non-tulkus with spiritual power passed down from past lives have spiritual power. So... This leads to another question - the Tibetan system of choosing tulkus would never pass a double-blind placebo-controlled study test. Never. So how accurate is it, really? And why the HELL are almost all of the tulkus male? What gives? What if many of them are actually coming back as women to undercut the sexism of the Tibetan system, and are not being recognized as a result?

I think even Dalai Lama has talked about this in public gathering... i dont understand what is "controversial" or "hollow" about this? - He was talking about how it can affect a child's thinking and life in a negative way. Obviously it can take them in the wrong path, even though Tulku are realized beings. You have to take the example of Shakyamuni Buddha's life in luxury and ignorance until he took to the forest. I take from this not that the Tulku system is "bad" in itself, but simply from a past era, and in many cases no longer applicable to or efficacious in these times, especially when applied by rote, in the traditional way. From a personal perspective, this cautions us as practitioners that not all Tulku can be taken at face value. This seemed very rational and well thought out to me. Ie., being scandalized is another form of attachment. Practice discernment, rather than seeking to pass judgement.

I have been trying to practice Vajrayana Buddhism for several years now. Frankly speaking, for years I viewed with a certain superiority complex everything that had to do with other forms of Buddhism : Theravada, Zen, etc. I used to believed (like many) that Lamaism was the "higher" form of Buddhism (esoteric Buddhism) I must say that these practices did have a profound effect on my mind, but I still don't know if it was always positive. Along with these powerful visions and experiences came -sometimes- bouts of anxiety, or depression. The answer of some is that they were "purifications". To this day I believe that Tibetan lamaism mixes authentic teachings of the Buddha with certain heterodox practices of Indian Tantrism, as well as Bön animism and all this finds its "form" -of political order- in that of a feudal society (tibetan society before the still unjustified and barbaric communist invasion) but that in effect it was a society that was not equal, on the contrary it was highly hiérarchieside, violent and sexist. So, now, after verifying that the cases of tulkus who take advantage of their condition are repeated, it is difficult to understand what the search for power and money, has to do with the Buddha's teachings. it seems that their organizational (political) system is incompatible with the teachings they preach.

Of coarse Vajrayana originated with "Indian" Tantra (look up Oddiana and the Indus Valley Shaivism) and the Buddha himself came from the Vedic tradition. But there is nothing to be ashamed about or to deny in this regard - as Tantra in it's TRUE form is both nonsectarian AND non-dual in its view. You should study study study ALL forms of Tantra to understand its trans cultural and pan religious nature. Dont be a "Buddhist"..be AWAKE!

What audience would these new - found tulkus be addressing? Tibetans will likely think it is some sort of outreach to Westerners, and Westerners not already familiar with the tulku system will largely find the entire framework outdated. And, aside from the problems such as entitlement and emotional immaturity as the child is growing up, it will be even worse when he as an adult, is on the throne. and the Western audience will be whispering "the emperor has no clothes"! Even worse if the child, now adult, actually has the siddhi of reading minds and perceives this. Look around and notice the average age of your sangha members. May we all reassemble in the pure lands!, but I don't see it as viable going forward in the context of the younger generations. The Western tulkus of the future will have to find teaching methods more appropriate to Western culture. In this case, an actual tulku will find the imposed and inappropriate teaching methods to be an actual impediment.

. Please allow me to interrupt. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. In Pidhauli (Vaishali) the local deity is Bardiha Baba. Bardiha means the Baba who didn't allow us to stay where he was staying. Bardiha Baba is the Buddha no doubt because he didn't allow the crowd of Lichavies to stay with him in Bandagama. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to Buddhists.

I also do not mean to interrupt but when you said Buddhist only serch for buddha. Now as a Buddhist myself we see buddha as a guider Our goal is not to search buddha but attend buddha hood. See in vajrayana buddism we believe everyone is buddha. Bz we all have Unlimetless potential and compassion but it's covered in ignorance, ego, hatred so forth.. So when we go beyond that wall of ignorance that what we mean by buddha. My purpose of this was just to clear ur doubt.

Namaste your holiness. I invite you to Bihar. Your holiness. The days of tulku should end. The days of guru and guru yoga should end as well. The days of the "whispered lineage" should also end. All aspects of Dharma should be available to all without hierarchy or inequality. I practice Tantra and I can tell you I have had many teachers and taken many vows, but I am only human and my teachers are only human. There are profound and subtle aspects of the Dharma and especially Tantra (Vajrayana) that require extensive education and experience, and these will be of great benefit both in thus lufe and at the moment of passing. But the awakening is within the practitioner, within the student, its up to THEM to walk the path and recognize their own nature. The Dharma is the most personal & intimate thing there is, but the more you focus on these EXTERNAL and DUALISTIC factors as mentioned above the more obstacles you create within the practitioner. We need PURE Dharma and genuine Dharma, not more ego and obstacles. Open up the precious and profound Dharma to ALL. All are human, All are Buddhas!

Reply from a senior teacher within the JAPANESE VAJRA tradition ( SHINGON ) : It is VERY, VERY dangerous what you are promoting . Please be aware that along the lines of COSMOLOGICAL analysis BUDDHA SAKYA taught us ( in accord with the BHAVACHAKRA ), it is an entirely non-controversial BUDDHIST assumption that the forces of MARA attempt -- willfully, systematically, and in careful cooperation with human enterprise -- to undo the superior teachings of the DHARMA . Along these lines, the modern forces of anti-BUDDHIST propaganda ( e . g . CCP ) ACTIVELY hunt / disparage the reputation of our ancestral institutions -- TULKU included -- in an attempt to undo their cultural relevance and destroy the BUDDHADHARMA . In fact, according to the ACTUAL philosophical sweep of your argument I almost have to wonder -- are you paid to read from the CCP pulpit / brochure, sir ? Part of the problem with not taking the supernatural assumptions of VAJRA-style BUDDHISM seriously is that you are personally " disarmed / liable before MARA " -- meaning you do not possess the philosophical basis to resist the methods by which he ( MARA ) might run away with your very tongue ... ! Nevertheless, as is the case in all instances where our behavior may be in doubt : may we take refuge before the TRIPLE GEM, seek mutual restraint, and be excused from the promulgation of ADHARMIC speech / philosophy which is well known to ruin the precious storehouse of our accumulated merit .

@@senorbeckon @senorbeckon @senorbeckon The only thing I am "promoting" is open direct access to pure Dharma, free of dualistic, sectarian hierarchies that are inconsistent at best, and even worse, elitist, exclusionary and abusive. I have NOT spoken against the profound, subtle "super natural" elements of Tantra -Vajrayana, only the hypocrisy and dualistic confusion of packaging them in certain "containers" who have managed to be convinced (or convinced themselves) that they are "exceptional." What makes someone "special" in this regard is their long studies, their experience, skill, sensitivities and articulational abilities to convey the truth - but "special" does NOT come by birth status, race or rank or title. "Do, but don't entitle, rank or lable" would be my motto. The Dharma is profound, Tantra is profound, the "secrets" of Vajrayana are profound... but, presented through a mechanism preference and selectivity that merely introduces another dualistic concept and increases the ILLUSION of individual ego, they are like the demons we face in the Bardo state, pure in nature but dualistic in appearance. I have had many great teachers who on occasion have conveyed some fairly bad information. I have also occasionally encountered some really bad teachers who have similarly conveyed some very helpful information. From the ultimate perspective such things are **all good** in that they are of one nature which cuts through the fears and hopes of the ego. I am grateful to all and for all. You began your response by declaring your own "credentials" as a "senior teacher" as if that means the slightest thing to me OR to the truth of the Dharma. There is, in your declaration, more than a bit of irony. It's an example of the tricky nature of maya, the ego, the lord of demons. Perhaps you should consider what I am saying and not jump to conclusions in support of your "high" status? How will that help you in the long run anyway? May you have happiness. May you be free of sorrow. May you be never separated from true happiness free of sorrow. May you abide forever in equanimity, free of grasping, free of aversion. 🙏❤
