If you disconnect from the MAF and if vehicle shuts off! The MAF is working fine! Your vehicle was still running when disconnected ... the MAF is defective!

Idle Air Control Valve. While its running try tapping lightly on your old MAF to see it makes it stall. See if it will start with your MAF wires disconnected. See if it stalls when you reconnect it.

You have to buy an oem sensor for it to work correctly. Do not buy an aftermarket MAF sensor whether it's duro last or no name brand. It has to be OEM. And make sure that it's sealed when you buy it because a lot of these parts dealers are reselling used parts that have been bought by customers and they bring them back. I call them use because who knows what happened to him when the customer purchased them in the first place and brought it back to the business. And then the business resell them new. That happens a lot

I have a P0101 on my 2001 Toyota Sienna. Air filter is new I pulled the MAF sensor and cleaned it with MAF cleaner. Check Engine light is still on. Will the Check Engine light go off by itself, or do I have to clear the code? Does it need to go through a drive cycle? How long might that take, and what sort of driving would need to be done?

You need to clear the code . But check all the hoses it can be that too maf sensor goes off when hoses going to engine are loose or popped off

My experience is: Over or under idle speed are the O2 sensors. Sensors send the wrong signal to the computer. This is why your engine is cutting off. Sluggish throttle response and poor mileage is the MAF sensor. Near a 100k miles, replace it all and you get a new engine it seems like.

My 3.0 ranger was making a pinging chatter noise when I’d hit the gas an after unplugging the map sensor that fixed it it don’t maybe noises when accelerating so my guess is my engine was running lean with the map plugged in

@@michaelmansun6203 I ended up putting e15 flex fuel in my 1999 ranger even tho it says don’t use e15 in cars older then 2001 but running e15 in my ranger made the pinging noise go away under load guess I’m just going to run e15 flex fuel in it as it seems to run good on e15

@@kamryn7496 I took my MAF off, cleaned it really well with MAF cleaner, blew it dry with compressed air. Let it sit for an hour. Installed. Cleaned Idle Air Control. It was nasty. Unplugged battery for 30 minutes. Same issues with wont start, or idles rough and dies. Unplugged MAF, started, idles like a new car. Have not driven, yet. MAFs are 15 bucks in Ebay. No to Autozone. I read it will run lean and can cause damage. I have also read that it won't damage the engine. It's an old car. I'm driving unplugged.

Usually, you have to reset the ECU when fitting a new MAF. If you don't, it can take 200 to 300 miles before it relearns the new MAF and willl run a bit rough . It can also trigger a MAF sensor fault with the new sensor. Did it not tell you this in the paperwork that came with the new sensor?

@@MattsShop Yes disconnecting the battery and reconnecting the battery will work on many cars. Ive never heardd that you have to reset the Computer, that can be a pain in the ass. You can also ready the numbers inside of the OBDII reader and it will tell you if you are within spec.

Hey friend here's a tip for you the maf may not be your problem check the air control sensor and check for vacuum leaks using smoke if there's a leak you will see it. Meanwhile check that air control sensor

If you've already ruled out a vacuum leak, maybe an AIC issue, but my guess based on age of your vehicle is the throttle body just needs cleaning or replacing if too far gone. Also check/replace PCV while you're at it. It's easy and cheap enough to worth doing at the same time (at least on my vehicle).

Or if you don't have an emissions test in the immediate future and don't care about losing your radio settings, just unplug the negative terminal of the battery for ten to fifteen minutes while you clean or replace the MAF. This will clear all learned data and reset everything to default settings, so if it really was due to a bad MAF sensor and nothing else, it should perform well as soon as you start driving it. Then as you drive it, the ECU will collect data again starting with the defaults as the baseline.

@@walexander8378 While hard shifts are one of the signs, that alone is not a diagnosis for a dirty or bad MAF sensor. A dirty or bad MAF should throw a check engine code along with other performance issues, usually hesitation on acceleration from full stop, loss of power and general sluggishness (my experience). But those issues could also be caused by a vacuum leak, dirty throttle body, dirty fuel injectors and other fuel system issues, etc. If the only thing you have is hard shifting and nothing else and no check engine light, I wouldn't automatically assume bad MAF (although it *could* be). It's very difficult to diagnose without an actual code as a starting point Best bet is to take it to an honest mechanic.

I have a 03 buick century that was stalling and dying I have tried seafoam in the gas tank because I thought I had gotten bad gas I had a diagnostic of a bcm and replaced it but the original bcm is the only one that will allow my car to start I have replaced a driver's side rear end solenoid and a gas cap also changed the radiator and a fuel filter and a battery and a starter now I have also replaced mass air flow paid a shop 50 dollars to do it and it's still trying to stall and die ??? What could be the problem

Actually. When you unplug your MAF sensor it won’t stall out but rather default to a state pre programmed into the computer. Which will make it run in a stable state. The problem is that over time you will loose power and performance because the sensor helps control the airflow into your fuel mixture which goes into your engine. This isn’t a static number but one that fluctuates so the sensor helps the car from running rich.

@@OU-xc4os we aren’t talking about an alternator though. My car is 2011. Not that new. When the MAF is bad it causes your car to run rich and shudder and stall out. Bottom line. All computers in cars since they started installing computers in cars have a default state for the air fuel mixture. The MAF sensor adjusts for real time changes because air flow isn’t always a constant. So by unplugging it… it will default to that saved state. I’ve also done this just now to test my logic with my 1995 Ford pickup.
