I think his biggest issue was she put the pressure on herself, when all he wanted was her. He knew who she was and where she came from. If he wanted the perfect princess he would have stayed with Audrey or any of the Auradon princesses. He knew Mal and all he wanted was for her to genuinely do her best, and to him the book was a quick and easy shortcut.

@@chlyri He likely didn't know he had to assure her because she hid her struggles from him. She wanted him and Auradon to think she was fine even though she was struggling. He has always known she is a VK and has always stood by her and defended her- he even brushed off her using a love potion on him and assured her he knew she was good. He has always known she is Maleficent's daughter and that has never phased him How is he meant to reassure her when he genuinely doesn't know there is a problem- it came as a shock to him that all the progress he thought she had made was nothing more than magic tricks.

She read a spell from her mothers book, rather than going to a hairdresser. when she was on the Isle she had no problem letting Dizzy have at her hair- so why didn't she go to an Auradon hairdresser? and as for the cooking in the first movie they made cookies from scratch and you're telling me she forgot how to do this and the best she could do is a single sandwich which she then used magic to make that one sandwich into a feast? If the VK's could make cookies from scratch when they were barely off the Isle, then after spending time in Auradon why didn't skills improve? at the very least mal knew how to make cookies/biscuits That is a shortcut and not putting in the effort to learn for herself

At least she learned the magic herself, unlike Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, who got other people to do magic for them. Or have you not seen those? Cinderella didn't make her pink dress and she didn't make the white one. Aurora didn't make her dress, Merriweather & Flora did - with magic. They also made her birthday cake with magic. Sometimes people are TIRED. She's a 17yo girl with no training, no parental support, few friends, in a new culture, constantly being observed by people who hate her, and because she's an abuse survivor she's afraid if she's not perfect Ben will turn on her. So she took a shortcut. Big deal, fairytale heroines do it all the time.

It's that thing of they're in a magical place, they decided they wanted to be good and they want to use their magic for good, but everybody automatically treats them like they're just like their parents and they're going to kill everybody because of who they were born to. They didn't choose their birth parents and they sure as hell probably wouldn't have chosen the abusive villains. Hades from the 3rd movie was right, one of the good guys kids made a mistake, it's just a mistake. Even if it should be considered domestic terrorism. One of the villains kids makes a mistake,all of their descendants should suffer. Lock them all up and throw away the key. It not only speaks to classism, but also generational trauma. To me, it always spoke volumes because it felt like they were actively saying a child should not be punished for the sins of the parents. And a child really should not be punished for what their parents did.

I agree, plus she wasn't even doing anything major, she read faster, she used magic instead of dye, and she turned a PB&J into a feast. That last one could actually be really useful in fighting world hunger or in their case hunger on the Isle. Technically she never cheated and used the tools she had available. I was also upset that she gave up her spell book at the end of the movie and the way Fairy Godmother took it as if using magic is a bad thing pertaining to everyone except Fairy Godmother.
