Although you like them I've found Castelli overpriced and not the best quality ,ie logo,s all seem to last till the first wash ,and nearly always they are hand wash ! look to other brands that are cheaper and hard wearing ,Rapha the same only even more eye watering prices

Have noticed that when I ride MTB with normal clothing I'm ignored but when dressed in lycra on my road bike other cyclists nod or put their hand up ,. Quite a snobby sport.

@@shaunrogers2256 This is why I'm a closet cyclist, the overall snobbery is very off putting and keeps me out of bike shops and group rides. There are some outliers obviously, but in my 25+ years of cycling, snobbery as been the rule.

@@beefriprock8112 Wierd not been my experience. I cycle in all weather and even when doing aleisure ride. I wear a great big plastic rain coat and water proof TROUSERS, no cycle wear just normal water proofs. I usually ride a 26 inch wheeled hybrid "mountain bike" that i have slapped bmx cruiser bars on. So i'm about as far as from your typical looking cyclist or tourer rider as you can get and i get frequent hellos and good mornings from the lycra warriors on their wonderful speed machines around where I live... maybe its just cos i'm the novelty, i'm dressed normal but clocking in 20-30 miles. I ride regular routes and see the same cyclist on them. But everyone i see says morning at least.

I've been cycling for well over 50 years and still find channels like yours really useful. It's always good to see what other cyclists are doing so that we don't get stuck in our own rut with our own ideas, and there are always new things coming to the market which we may not know about otherwise. It doesn't matter how much you know about a subject, there will always be something new to learn.

thanks for an informative video! I've been biking quite a big bit of my life, but i was completely confused by all the bike clothing since I've never bothered to buy proper biking clothes (or bikes either for that sake, i finally switched my old noisy 3-gear bike for a trek mountain bike with 21 gears , and omg, it's like riding on a cloud up hills now! ☁️)

It's amazing how much difference getting a decent bike can make - a law of diminishing returns when you start spending serious money. (Although I once rode a £10k bike at a track day and it too was like a cloud). Of course you don't NEED all or any of this kit, but I thought it useful to explain what most/many cyclists use. It came from the simple thought that no-one ever told me not to put underwear under my cycling shorts, and I know that happens for a lot of people including Fiona Kolbinger, the first female winner of the Transcontinental.

I wear a wide variety of clothing and to be honest very rarely cycling specific. I have a middle aged physique and would look silly in skin tight cycling gear. I wear a mix of hiking and golf wear and to be honest modern golf clothing is pretty much bike wear in a different style. I have bought some shirt and trousers from Lululemon as they are super stretchy and yet look quite formal so good for commuting. Only thing I have ever really needed which is cycling specific is gloves - a must in my opinion which you only find out when you go on a long ride without them! I do look a bit odd though on a road bike but I don’t care.

My ears are an essential part of my self-defence mechanism when on a bike- I would never have ear pieces in. I rarely ride without bright clothing- sometimes Flo-yellow. If other cyclists think that is 'naff' it's their problem. Both observations not criticism, I love your channel.

I’ll stick my two pennyworth in here. I could never understand why cyclists wear black or dark clothing. I have a fluorescent orange Hoodie with reflective patches on it, and the day that I get hit by a car I’d love to say ‘What you didn’t see me?’ Whereas if the driver says he didn’t see you, and you are wearing black then you have no defence. Great information. To protect my eyes from bugs and dust and the sun I wear self darkening prescription glasses. they are my only glasses. I gave up on Gortex years ago. My brother and I were on a fast 100 mile 160K summer ride, when we biked into a long hard rain at just above Freezing. The combination of my body heat and the cold rain delaminated the jacket. My son had the same thing happen to his Gortex under similar conditions. I wear a water proof jacket if it is a cold rain. In a warm summer rain I wear a short sleeve wool shirt. Wool retains 80% of its insolation properties when wet. it cost money to get started in cycling. Get out and enjoy the weather , don't wait for a sunny , warm day or you will only get out a few days year. Some of my bike gear goes back to the late 60's Good gear last for ever..

I rode this winter with a wool balaclava under the helmet, worked a treat, temps between minus 15 to 25 for the cold spell time. Nothing else worked. Also and insulated gilet, to top of wicking t-shirt, one or two woolpower polos and a windproof jacket, the big problem was keeping the hands somewhat bearable cold, but that will take another season to sort out. :-)

For the bottom part the most versatile option i think is have inner padded liners (shorts) and then whatever suits the purpose on top: any shorts, pants, denims.

I wear as little as possible, and rarely padded cycle shorts, as they breed bacteria which cause staphylococcal infections, particularly around hair follicles. If I get the chance I throw a bit of alcohol hand wash about. Merino tops and undies if I need them but no stinky polyester or "lycra." At 70 I tend not to give fks any longer.

G3 are great pants to wear with padded shorts. About £3 off Ebay. You also get less friction from the chamois - which matters to me because I have EBS (blistering disease). I have a really cool idea that you could test in your next video... I think that growing a beard makes it easier to wear a cycling balaclava in rainy weather because it creates an air pocket where you breathe out. Can you test this without and then with a beard Or even, do beards themselves act to divert water away from down our necks (longer beard required).

I have done 5 bike tours of over 600km in a week. The 1st two without undies but the last 3 with Decathlon's knitted polyester body fit boxers on the same principle as 1000 mile socks which has a tactel liner to reduce friction and blisters. I find my method works, much less discomfort and no ingrowing hairs. So my question is: bare bum to chamois, where's the science?

I don't want to spend a fortune on bike gear, but I don't want to suffer either, whether from cold, wet or heat . I am gradually getting my head around what is for what and why, but frankly, I hate going into bike shops to ask for advice. (Che-ching!). So it's a slow and fraught process. the lycra = snobbery is pure misconception, nowadays you can get lycra shorts for less than 10€, if you feel more comfortable on cargo pants that's great, but if you give up the comfort lycra shorts give because you feel embarrassed that's another question

I'm intrigued why road cyclists don't have helmet peak but then do wear a peaked cap! I'm increasingly wearing running tops rather than specific cycling or 'outdoor' gear - a brand such as ASICS are great quality (better than a lot of cycling gear) yet half the price.

Good point! And no idea really! 😀 Might be historical, with caps worn long before helmets, and the upturned peak can divert rain from the eyes. Speaking personally, I like a cap to keep the sun off my head, plus the peak gives better shade, closer to my eyes. I used to use an MTB helmet on my commute but the peak was full of holes, so utterly ineffective until I blocked them up with gaffa tape. Would like to know others thoughts...

Depends on your riding position. Personally I find a peaked helmet or cap restricts my forward vision on a road bike. If I wear a cap I will wear it backwards to protect the back of my neck from sunburn.

@@jamble7k Good idea - are they any good? I suppose if it's a spoken podcast or audio book the audio quality doesn't matter too much. A few caveats for longer bikepacking trips a) bluetooth headphone would be another bit of electronics to charge b) bluetooth on a phone draws more power than cabled c) I listen to an elderly mp3 player on longer rides, not the phone, to keep the phone battery healthy and I'm not sure that player has bluetooth For shorter rides though, and in particular commuting, both of which I suspect many new cyclists will be doing it's a top idea. I prefer mountain bike helmets for road biking, for me it provide more sun shade. I prefer comfort rather than speed... It really doesn't effect the speed very much for the average rider. If I were more in to racing or speed than I will use a road bike helmet, but for regular cycling I prefer mountain helmets.

The key to dressing for cycling is versatility. You will warm up as you ride, and quite quickly. Start off a little colder that you would like and Be prepared to remove some items. However in cold weather, the feet and hands need more protection. Over shoes are a must to keep the toes toasty. My tip in cold weather is to wear shoes a size too big. It's the air gap that makes the difference.

I’ve bought wool arm and leg warmers but they slip down. I have Lycra arm warmers that grip and don’t slip. I have a wool jersey and it’s great. Never tried wool tights or bibs though.

Best arm warmers I've bought are those from Torm with a big reflective stripe down them. So many other slip down and there's a gap between arm warmer and jersey sleeve.

I've always seen cycling as a means to an end when I was younger, and ran for fun, now I'm a little bit older and a lot heavier, running is not my friend, but after seeing my brother lose 5.5 stone cycling, doing centuries and cycling 5k+ mi/yr, I dug out the old MTB and starting hitting some of the local cyclepaths and trails in Fife. Now I'm actively enjoying it, using spd pedals for the first time ever and *touch wood* haven't yet fallen off. If I keep it up I'll need to convince the wife to let me look at gravel bikes. Do you find that your prescription inserts fog up at all? I've been cycling all my life without a pair of proper cycling glasses because of my requirement for vision correction and i don't wear contact lenses. Thought about getting some inserts made but almost everyone seems to slate them for getting fogged up all the time and not working at all

The cost is pretty high, but I suspect half of that is the brand of the sunglasses. I'd be kidding myself anyway if I said I wasn't prepared to spend £300 odd on vision correction while on the bike, considering what sort of money I've already spent on the bikes themselves. Very interesting video Simon but from my perspective, as someone who just goes mountain biking and wouldn't go near a road bike, the clothing suggestions appear a bit OTT. Would the newbies you are aiming the video at, really be prepared to spend a small fortune on all that gear and is it really necessary? Speaking as someone who generally just wears Ron Hills, A Buffalo smock in the cold, Montange wind proof when its warmer and a Tog24 long sleeve thermal top and that's it. I admit I'm not a biking zealot and just generally go biking in the local forests for exercise but I think the majority who are coming into to biking atm are probably in the same boat. Would you not be a bit worried that your expensive suggestions might put newbies off biking?

As an overweight person, I have yet to find arm and leg warmers that will stay put. Both tend to roll up and slide down on my body. So I prefer wearing long sleeve shirts, where the sleeves are stretchy enough to pull them up to the elbow if it gets too hot. And I wear 3/4 length bibs basically almost all year round. They are still kinda ok even in hot weather and still ok down to maybe 10 °C.

Thanks for the comment - and to be fair, dropping arm-warmers are an issue for all of us. Some brands make different sizes and I find it helpful to choose one slightly smaller than expected. Provided, that is, they're not Italian sizes which are miniscule! I find arm warmers are often warmer than long sleeve shirts due to their windproofing, and that can be handy on chilly mornings. Whatever works for you, enjoy the cycling.

Rapha IS a marketing gimmick! There are far better garments at sensible prices. Endura Humvee baggy shorts with detachable padded inserts and adjustable leg fasteners.

I'd like to know more about wheel sets. I technically have a gravel bike but am curious how to get a second set of wheels for more road-cycling-esque adventures. Do I have to move my cogs over, so on and so forth...

That's a very good question and one I should probably do a video about, but since you asked. Typically gravel bikes have two wheel sizes 650 and 700. 650 have a smaller diameter so they can take fatter tyres. 700 is normal road wheel size. Both would need to use disc brakes to make them interchangeable, and it would help if they're the same brand so the disc rotor sits in exactly the same place on both sets. Rotors are usually sold separately, but it's the placement that's important. If the placement is out, even a fraction, between the two sets, you'll have to adjust the placement of the brake calliper on the frame - it's simple to do but it's another step. Swapping the cassette (the cogs on the back wheel) is also simple, but fiddly, and needs two special tools. That said, it's good to remove the cassette occasionally to give it a damn good clean, so worth having the chain whip and cassette tool. Easier, but somewhat controversial, is to have exactly the same type of cassette on each wheelset. Some mechanics (and I'm most definitely NOT a mechanic) argue this can damage the cassettes as they might suffer un-even chain wear. I've found that, provided you check your chain every time you wash your bike and chain it as soon as it hits 0.5% it's not a problem - video kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaGZg4hunMeMgdU GCN has good videos showing how to swap cassette and adjust disc brake callipers. Coming from MTB riding, I found dressing for gravel a bit harder, those first 20 minutes when you start off in the cool(cold) morning plus the wind chill before you are warmed up usually meant I was way over dressed and had to layer down and find spaces to pack away the excess. Do like my merino snood. Arm warmers, why is everything black, these are like socks, always one missing. Do have a set of summer arm coolers/sun screeners - work surprisingly well. I still wear shorts over my bibs, just an MTB thing. And what is up with sizing and Castelli (those sizing charts are like playing darts too close to closing time). I end up going two sizes up for bibs to accommodate my height, one size up fits, but on long rides you feel the straps just a bit to tight. Still trying to figure out the tights and shorts thing, rode in February in shorts, just a little snow on the trails, and everyone else was in tights at 7°C. On reflection maybe I should have waited for the weather to warm up to 8°C. Shoes and socks next? Or more on gloves, winter I always end up carrying two pairs, cold to start and when they get sweaty. Still to find a decent spring/fall pair that deal with rain but don’t boil your hands, or feel like a pair of hockey gloves.

I'm a Yorkshireman who's been living in dead flat SW Florida for 20 years and unbelievably, I never thought about the sun getting through the gaps in my helmet and burning my bald spot. I’ve been doing this about five years now. Every year it seems I’m figuring out something new when it comes to cycling kit. The latest thing for me are the arm warmers. Autumn and Spring are the tricky seasons for me because they can start off cold and get very hot towards midday. Or, start off nice and become chilly mid ride.

Thanks Bob. I'm not too fussy with my socks. Merino most of the year - the ones in this video were Giro and part of the goodie bag from Grinduro. I have some smaller, thin ones for hot weather, which seems a long time ago! Shoes are Lake, both MTB, Gravel and Road. I like them, the come in different width fittings, and Lake only make shoes, they're not part of a wider brand.

Great clip - thank you. I use a shake dry jacket and I have added Tenacious Tape’s reflective tape in squares on the front and back. I trail run, road run, and gravel ride in it (BC has a lot of rain outside summer - maybe as much as Scotland?) and the tape is still good after 100’s of washes. Shake dry is super packable and a great add to my kit. Agree that a cycling cap (under a helmet) is great as a quick flip down mini visor when the sun is at that wrong angle as well for sweat control.

Merino boxers without a seem in the sensitive areas and a good leather saddle like the Rivets. Say goodbye to pads forever! I have not worn a pad in YEARS. The leather saddle will conform your your indivudual anatomy and you won’t need a pad.

There are two ways bike wheels are attached - a thru-axle and a quick release. In both cases the front and rear wheels can be removed which is handy when you put it in the car

Hi Neil - I was wearing them on this! Sorry but this is going to be a complicated reply. Yes I use Seal Skinz cycling socks of two different thicknesses - but get the ones with silicone grip to seal around the ankle. But they only work to a point. And once the water gets inside in winter they’re a liability, trapping your foot in a bag of cold water. So I’ll use them on day rides where I’ll be crossing streams. . Touring in heavy rain I prefer really good overshoes like Spatz which stop the rain that runs down the inside of your tights and which would quickly fill socks. But I still take them when touring because I can use them once I stop cycling - they allow me to wear soaking wet cycle shoes to go to the pub for dinner and to dry the shoes (or walk around campsite) and still keep my feet dry. I think I went into a bit of this in the Lightweight Bikepacking series with the green border thumbnails. There’s also a review of the Spatz overshoes in the videos. Hope that’s useful Neil.

Hi Moe. I don't think the knee-warmers (knee sleeves is new to me) add any meaningful protection. Their job is to warm the muscles, tendons and fascia around the complex knee joint in cooler weather. I like them when travelling because they turn shorts - almost - into longs when it rains and the temperature falls.

Hi too Mo. I have received deep knee cuts from falling over with cotton trousers on. If you are prone to falling, and I am (I broke my ribs this season) then "know thyself" and wear knee pads. I always fall hard and break bones. Rarely can I just walk away and seldom fall lightly. I didn't even go to the hospital but it turned out I had broken two ribs in multiple places and cracked my sternum. They have all knitted back in alright, but my point is that one or two ribs more and my lungs would have imploded or punctured! finito. It put me out of action for far too long, and some day I'll bite the dust. BUT the correct safety equipment FOR YOU is all you ever need to worry about. Not what anybody thinks. Go all out. Saying that, breaking my arm or wrist might not bother me, but if it does you - just get protective gloves instead of racing ones. I borrow lots of MTB kit and riding all day with state-of-the-art protective knee pads - in my view you will not notice. If anything you will find a lot of it better.

Something I probably should have explained Stephen as it's a term more frequently used in te travel industry - it's the bits either side of the popular season for... whatever. So for skiing the shoulder season would be early Dec and late Apr. For Scottish summer holidays, just before Easter and September. For cycling in Scotland it's pretty much the same as summer holidays. Thanks for pointing that out.

You can get progressive prescription cycling glasses from Oakley. Mine are polarized, self-adjusting to light, etc. Excellent. Make sure you get them through a legit optician. Caveat: mike costed $600.
