I’m from Russia and got this game on my sixth birthday in 2002 from my dad. It was the first game that I had truly owned and played any video game by myself. I was absolutely fascinated with the game, because graphics looked sooo good, and the music is very dramatic and fits Danny Elfman’s music so well! But the boss fights and stealth missions were very difficult for me at my age. The funny thing is that this game also caused my first bit of troubleshooting! You see, in Russia in 2002 there were almost no official releases of video games. I believe that Spider-Man 1 The Game was never officially released. But dad bought me a pirated version with the russian translation built in. And it had a huge problem - after finishing the Vulture’ Tower level the game would 100% always crash and there was no way to progress any further. I was essentially stuck! Man, I remember crying of frustration hahaha Me and my dad decided take a look at the game files and this was the first time I even learned the concept of files and file directories. Eventually we found additional files that would patch the game to run russian subtitles, and we deleted them. That would also cause save files to get erased, so this would mean that I’d have to start the game over again with the original english language. So that was also my first experience with the english language hahaha But this time I could progress through the Tower level and complete the game on all difficulties afterwards. Overall, I still have fond memories and love this game. Considering that the developers had only 18 months and only a few script reading sessions that they had to essentially memorize in their head, I think the game turned out to be a fantastic experience. If only they didn’t screw up with the PC-version of Spider-Man 2 (that was my first video game related disappointment, but it’s a story for another time…)

There actually is a dodge ability in this game, you need to play with the "enhanced" controls and then hold a direction on the d-pad and press jump. (like using the web attacks) This allows you to perform directional dodge jumps olls. They're a bit tricky to effectively insert into standard combat gameplay, but they work really well in certain boss fights like with Shocker, and Green Goblin. While Directional jumps are just plain fun to use in the Shocker fight, they really shine in the Goblin fight, as you can interrupt most of Goblins combos by dodging mid combo regardless of whether you're being hit by the combo or not. This also makes it easier to avoid Goblins grab attack, and makes it easier to be more aggressive with melee in general as opposed to relying solely on web attacks. There are also directional punchs and kicks, they're quite neat too. (Not very powerful, but they add more depth to the combat system)

In the shocker level with the tunnels, you're supposed to aim and web zip to each of the safe areas. The reason Spider-Man has a web metre is for two reasons: 1. The 2000 Spider-Man game used it. 2. Originally Peter would have used web shooters, but they scrapped it later on.
@Albino_Basilisk3 жыл бұрын
Great video as always! The refilling your webs mechanic could also be left overs from the original movie script, since Tobey almost had web shooters. You can even spot them in a trailer, as well as in the film after Spider-Man sets MJ down on that random building (after the parade attack).
@alwaysnerdyretros3 жыл бұрын
Oh interesting! If that was in the original script that Treyarch read, you’re probably right
@pyroblade4523 жыл бұрын
I always thought when it was shown when he sets MJ down, that it wasn't a web "shooter" but more of a tube so his web could make it through his costume, like water through a garden hose
@Albino_Basilisk3 жыл бұрын
@@pyroblade452 a pretty good theory, however that’s the only scene in the film where he has those web shooters, and it’s also not present in the suits from the 2nd and 3rd movie

@destronlaserwave95663 жыл бұрын
46:15 Another one of the reasons is probably because this game is based on a earlier verison of the movie's script in which originally Peter had web shooters, and it even made its way into some trailers and some "blink and you miss it" moments in the final film.
@themiraculous04473 жыл бұрын
Fun fact about some of the music. A lot of the orchestral stuff is actually from an old sample library, east west symphonic adventures. Specifically, scorpions boss theme is just made of multiple of these loops chained together. The creepy piano that plays can be heard across a crap ton of media during the 90s and early 2000s.

3:20 - I wonder why they kept the "can't go down to ground level" script from PS1 era since they could've rendered a full city at this point. They couldn't do it with PS1 games because hardware had its limitations and story-telling wise it was convenient but PS2 had more advanced hardware and could fully render a whole city both sky and ground level.

For the more difficult sections of the game, there’s a strategy you can use entailing web-zipping in specified directions by using the R3, L3 and R1 buttons. First, you go into a free look-style mode by pressing R3, where you’ll notice a small red spider reticle. Second, you move the R3 button around to a certain spot you can web-zip to, during which it will change from red to green. Last, when you’ve moved the reticle to a point you want to zip to, press R1 and away you go. This works well for the “Showdown with Shocker” and parts of the “Chemical Chaos” levels.

Great video overall. This is a Spider-Man game that truly doesn't get the attention it deserves. Like you said, the Green Goblin would probably be the biggest selling point in terms of what makes the game unique.

I absolutely love Spider-Man on the PS1 to the point where I literally bought it on the Dreamcast and N64 as well and to this day it's still my absolute favorite Spider-Man game, its sequel was not as good but was still enjoyable as well. I'm guessing they knew that the movie was in production with the Green Goblin as the villain because he's not featured in the first or second game despite being Spider-Man's arch-nemesis. However because the Spider-Man movie game is essentially just a more polished version of the PS1 games in terms of gameplay I always looked at it as an unofficial third entry to that series since we finally got the Green Goblin in a 3D Spider-Man game with that same style of Gameplay as the previous two. I've always loved the Spider-Man games and all the ones from Spider-Man 2000 up to Spider-Man 2 (2004) will always hold a special Nostalgic place in my heart.

I’m really impressed by how well those shitty early-2000s pre rendered cutscenes capture the feeling of not just the camerawork, but the aesthetic and sound of Sam Raimi’s movies. They genuinely do fit really well, even more so than the (in-engine AND pre rendered) cutscenes in the game for 2.

You have a lot more tolerance than I do. That vulture lair level drove me nuts, and I can only imagine how frustrated I would be with those stealth levels.
