They are protected because of people like Aly. if you don't report to the cops because you thought he was your "friend" what can anyone else do about it? what if someone tries to do something and you show up to the cops and tell them that Larry is your buddy. you know what would happen to the guy who tries to help you? don't blame others. you did not do your job.

@@ps6474 I believe that he was claiming to do acupressure to release some muscle tension. Normally they need to put pressure on specific places on the body but for Nassar, that place happened to be inside the girls' vagina. One girl has said in her testimony that he did that to her brother as well by putting finger inside his genital and claimed that it would fix his 'chi' and then shoulder problem.

And this is why I’m grateful for my grandmother. From a young age, she taught me (like most Caribbean parents and grandparents) if someone touch me inappropriately or in a way that I don’t feel comfortable to open my mouth. It doesn’t matter if I’m not sure. I must tell someone and from a young age it was drilled into my head countless times . Some parents skip this step cuz they believe “it wouldn’t happens to their child”. But you don’t know what’s out there waiting for them.

First of all I think she didn't speak up before the 2012 Olympics because it would have ruined her chances of getting on the team. She was too focused on being the best gymnast she can be. Why on earth did these parents let their daughters be alone with this man?

He was known as "the best" by pretty much everyone in the gym community and parents were not permitted at the training camps. The Karoli's were (allegedly) doling out their own version of abuse (physical violence, humiliation, witholding food, etc), which provided mutually assured destruction. It also set the perfect grooming situation, because the doc would (allegedly) sneak the girls food and treat them kindly.

Agron Legioneras Dictionary definition of hero is "a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities". I would also say a hero is someone who protects others. She is a hero because I admire her courage in speaking out against her abuser. The women who are speaking out against this abuser (Nassar) are protecting other little girls who would be abused by the creep in the future. I stand by my statement that you are disgusting. Stop objectifying a woman who is literally talking about how she was molested as child you sick pervert. That's all I have to say to you now. Bye Felicia.

Right. She didn't know or realize it was abuse and she seemed to function perfectly until she was told she was abused really makes me wonder if she was really hurt. I think that is something for researchers to follow up on. I mean she Won gold, was happy and then she is told You were abused. Then she joins the bandwagon, writes a book and makes a ton of money and then makes even more money or will if a civil lawsuit is in play from the institution that employed this doctor. Look, I am not trying to defend the doctor or dismiss the fact that she had the expierience but it really is odd. More has to be researched about this issue of child sexual abuse. Lock em up and throw away the key/punishment is most certainly not going to cure this problem. We have to find out if this is in fact a learned behavior or is this in fact a genetic issue and if so how do we as a society treat this. Punishment only sends those who have not been caught into hiding and obviously if it is an attraction that is so strong such as an alchoholic who is in recovery/sober and an alchoholic beverage is placed right in front of them, how hard is it to walk away from it. I hope those of you who do read this get what I am trying to explain. Parents, you have to educate your children that if they are ever in a situation that makes them feel uncomfortable how to get away from the situation. They have to be educated that not everyone is going to try and hurt them etc...Ever since 9-11 we as a country have slipped so deeply into a paranoid society. It was not always like that. Anyway, Ive said my peice. I truly hope that all of the doctors (victims) can find closure and that they can now move forward in thier lives and that the doctor recieves the treatment/mental health he needs. Besides, I dont think this doctor is ever going to see the outside of a prison for the rest of his life. Such a really sad situation for all those involved in this situation.

This happened many years ago but I really find it disrespectful to invite a victim of abuse and ask her questions for just 6 minutes. We are talking about trauma and abuse and a human being that suffered from it, if you DECIDE to take a complex topic don't bother if you are gonna spend so little time as if you were showing some food recipe.

Somehow, Aly's determination to make people accountable for their actions (or lack thereof!) makes me feel braver. USA Gymnastics have kept her and all other girls in gymnastics silent for all these years and that is a crime in itself! I hope this inspires other girls to take actions about other men AND women keeping them small and silent.

The victim statements will hurt your heart. This man, this predator had the audacity to abuse these girls with their parents present. She said in court that a woman had already made allegations against him in 1997 and someone from the US Gymnastics Department confronted him about these allegations and obviously they did nothing so this is not an issue that just came out in 2015. Also they’re still sending bills to the parents from the medical treatments where their children were constantly abused.....DISGUSTING!

the interviewer is so wrong! the fact that she would compare or add to the image of one of the greatest accomplishments they've had the idea that is the same as raising their voice against abuse, I feel could have such a bad impact on the girls, like turning a great memory into maybe seeing the picture and remembering the abuse, its crazy.

This abuse happened for so many years because of various reasons. What I can't stand is when outsiders blame the gymnasts and say, "Why didn't they speak up?". So let me give you a number of reasons: 1. For many the abuse started when they were still children or young teenagers and they didn't comprehend what was going on and they truly believed that what he was doing was medical practice. 2. Sometimes, the child's parents or some other coach would be in the room. The fact that there was an adult there who didn't realise what was going on, how was the gymnast able to think that it was wrong? 3. Over the years, starting from 1988, some gymnasts did report Nassar's abuse but no legal action was taken and some adults in whom they confided turned a blind eye. 4. Larry Nassar was a renowned doctor, he had been the National gymnastics doctor for YEARS. Everyone praised him, everyone loved him. How were these young girls going to say that someone whom all coaches admired was abusing them? 5. The culture of silence and fear created by USAG, especially at the Karolyi Ranch made Nassar seem like the nicest person. The coaches were tough, strict, and many of them abusive. This made Nassar seem like the right person in whom to confide. At the Karolyi Ranch the food was disgusting and the gymnasts used to starve themselves. Larry was the one who brought them food, grooming them. He also let them compete injured which many gymnasts were thankful for. Mckayla Maroney even said that if it weren't for him she wouldn't have competed at the Olympics with a broken toe. 6. Many coaches didn't use to believe their gymnasts when they said they were in pain. How were these gymnasts going to tell them that the national team doctor was abusing them? 7. Martha Karolyi and other coaches made it clear that anyone who was problematic or difficult was going to be taken off the national team. Aly Raisman said that for this reason the gymnasts were afraid to ask for a bar of soap at the Karolyi Ranch. These young girls had their dreams in the hands of powerful adults who could end their Olympic dreams with a snap of their fingers. Nobody wanted to be the problematic gymnast. Hence, everyone stayed silent. My point is, this culture of FEAR gave way to a culture of SILENCE and that is why many gymnasts never spoke up. They had to SACRIFICE so much for their Olympic dreams, and some didn't even make it. The fact that Nassar, this abusive system and coaches completely destroyed these girls mentally, physically and emotionally hurts my heart. I hope change is in order. It needs to be.
