Decades ago a famous old-school German comedian (Loriot) does a similar skid (actually he plays a janitor, walking into the orchestra and starts chasing a bug around, triggering the set). While rehearsing, he was under the impression, that the tact of the orchestra was slightly slow and he felt very bad about it to address it, since they were the (I think) Viennese Philharmonics, and when he did, the First Violine blew him off like: “Man, if you think that, you’ll have to conduct faster”

I think this goes to show that as silly as Al likes to be, he has legitimate musical knowledge. Pay attention to his more restricted and subtle body language during the piano part of “The Toreador March.” And the way he flails his arms whenever the score calls for the brass to go fortissimo. He actually looked like he knew what he was doing. And that’s because he does. An even bigger accomplishment, though, was that of the musicians who (for the most part, or if you decide to flat-out ignore the testimonies of orchestra members found in this very comments section) were able to play through the entire suite all the while maintaining a straight face.
