The real factor hidden from the naked eye is the fact that everything in an interpretation lies in what was conveyed by the conductor to the orchestra during rehearsal. That's what creates that certain something that compels one to go and buy a CD of a certain piece by a certain conductor. If the conductor is good enough, he/she will shape the score to a subjective perfection and will be able to remind the hundreds of topics he covered with the orchestra during rehearsal through his/her on-stage conducting. With the greats such as Karajan, Bernstein, Haitink and Muti, these conveyed nuances exceed the boundaries of simple tempi adjustments and etc. and extend to a more abstract realm of a true rendition of a great piece.

@Zeebus McMoochie, remember the orchestra didn just meet on stage at the day of the concert. The conductor worked months and months behind the scenes, tirelessly, trying to get the orchestra to sound as incredible(or sometimes as terrible) as it sounds on the day of the concert. So conductors are actually beyond necessary. They form odder out of chaos.

Maybe last is best from the show off position but trust me - orchestra musicians hate it ;) It takes a lot of nerves for everyone to be comfortable with such kind of play. Of course Bravo to maestro Bernstein but ,please, do not understand this as a fine example how to actually Conduct a Symphony Orchestra. Best, Rihards

Rihards Buks No, you are putting a horrible example. This is a leadership style purely based on trust and how much you love your team members knowing they can do it. It takes years to build such trust and form the unity among people. To show off? I kid you not! They worked with one another for decades to reach that level. You gotta learn to respect the difference in style of leadership NOT just by seeing this short clip to jump into conclusion. You are shortsighted.

The last excerpt doesn't do the great Leonard Bernstein justice. Make no mistake, he was a great conductor and interpreter of symphonic works. There was no conducting needed, so he was having fun. And Muti is good, but he isn't in the same league with Karajan and Bernstein. The latter two are all-time giants, Muti is just good. The fastest comparison is I'd say opening bars of Brahms symphony no. 4 and it's Karajan>Bernstein>Muti.

Here's an ambiguous explanation of why Bernstein could conduct using just his face expression.

HaoSci he was showing emotion, and the musicians played the emotion he presented.

+HaoSci Uh, that's Leonard Bernstein (one of the greatest composers and conductors of all time). The orchestra knew the piece so well, he was superfluous. This was also a tradition on this piece with him.

The Wiener Phil knows Hadyn 88 better than Lenny ever will. He knows that too, That is to say it's their music and their culture-Haydn played in Vienna- and played it 1000 times and Lenny would be presumptuous to try and tell them how it goes. So they agree to play a little parlor trick since they could probably play it by memory and the two have rehearsed what nuances he would like. Lenny almost never conducts like this and, fact is, there's not much to do. It's simple plain music that stays in one tempo with no fermatas so they don't really need him. Believe me, he would not conduct Till Eulenspiegel like this nor would they want him too. Interesting no one commented on Muti or Karajan. Maestro Italo Marchini
