this chaconne is an amazing virtuosic performance. as a violinist, i actually prefer the Bach solo sonatas/partitas on the guitar, especially the polyphonic movements, because the chords flow so much more easily on guitar, plus the ability to introduce subtle and tasteful harmonic enhancements. my only problem with this arrangement is it's actually too complicated. it's so loaded with embellishments it's almost like a different piece and takes away from the essential character. my favorite guitar performance of this is from Petra Poláčková - faithful to the original composition, yet with the perfect amount of added spice. still, this is an incredible performance, definitely goes to my favorites list.

But I recall feeling compelled to show the folks in Leipzig my gratitude with a reasonable sum after sharing a poignant experience with thousands of likeminded folks in need of Herr Bach’s aural therapy and them delivering exactly what we all needed, this live-stream… kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYKsdI14mq96htk Then, when we emerged from house-arrest all pallid, larval and confused, this was the first concert my wife and I attended… kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWG4m6Oveph-fa8 …words cannot begin to describe that experience. The desperately starved audience bursting into grateful applause even before poor Víkingur Ólafsson could finish his opening sentence, says a great deal. I was obviously a fan of his beautifully minimalist renditions before the concert, and was sure he would disappear in the cavernous bowels of the Royal Albert Hall. He didn’t … you could hear a pin drop. Anyway, that rather verbose detour to explain: the gratitude is ours (the audience’s).

You are obviously a virtuoso and I wish you a long and happy career. In my opinion, however, your excellent technique betrays a certain irritability I find out of keeping with the music. Your chaconne is simply too ornament-happy, and your performance of “Ich ruf zu dir…” , one of Bach’s greatest pieces, is the clunkiest I have ever heard. Here’s hoping you add a sense of musicality to your otherwise impressive accomplishments.
