I’ve learned a few (much-simpler) Bach pieces and for me it isn’t a matter of remembering all the notes, but learning the song and remembering the melody in my head… after I’ve gone through the many many hours of learning the finger positions, when I play them now I just hear the song in my head and my fingers know where to go. It’s kind of like a maze, or walking through your home in the dark… instead of memorizing the number of steps, you memorize the layout of your floorplan

The medieval lute began with four double courses. Renaissance guitars also had four courses. The two instruments aren't really related; lutes fell out of fashion and, over many years, guitars gradually expanded and gained extra strings and essentially took up the space the lute used to fill.

@@joszebNot really an improvement, just vastly more economical and practical. They used to say it costs ad much to keep a lute in Paris as a horse. Look at it this way, the parlour guitar was to the archlute what a ukulele is to unmanageable electric guitar rig with giant amp and pedal board. The real direct improvement over the lute was the pianoforte, as much as the harpischord, combining the full polyphony of the harpischord with the expressive dynamics of the lute. For additional context the concert classical guitar developed long after the lute had fallen into disuse- filling a more similar niche to the lute than the parlour guitar.

Bach was a devout Lutheran Christian. He took to heart Luther’s great praise of music. Luther believed that music was a gift from God that was present in all creatures and reached its highest form in humans. He said, "Music is a gift and grace of God, not an invention of men". Luther said that music is second only to the Word of God in terms of praise. He said, "Next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise". Luther said that “music controls our minds, hearts, and spirits.” Luther said that music can drive out the devil and make people cheerful. He said, "The devil flees before the sound of music almost as much as before the Word of God". He also said, "Sacred music can encourage the heart, help fight temptation". and “Sacred music can proclaim the gospel to weary souls". Finally, Luther said that music is the only art that can afford peace and joy of the heart. He said, "I am strongly persuaded that after theology there is no art that can be placed on a level with music". Bach was choirmaster in St. Thomas church and composed so much church choral music of sublime nature. His music is such a gift and testimony to God’s beauty. He signed his name SDG Soli Dei Gloria, To God Alone be the Glory!

It's like she has a complete ensemble at her disposal there in her lap. So many wonderful variations in tone and texture she caresses us with. I know this piece quite well but I'm constantly listening out for what comes next with La Maestra Mascardi. I must admit I used to think of the lute just as an instrument of historical interest. She has really opened my ears and is as fascinating to watch as she is to listen to. She definitely deserves to be a lot better known than she is. I can't think of many performers who play Bach with such depth and sensitivity. Bravissississimo!

I've never heard a piece like this from Bach before, it sounds more folk like than the pure Baroque approach we tend to hear - what an absolutely astounding artist he was. The playing and the sound of the instrument are also wonderful.

This suite was originally the 3rd partita for solo violin; Bach wrote 3 sonatas and partitas for violin, and they've been arranged for other instruments many times. It's believed Bach himself made the lute transcription.

@@timbruer7318 Ha, now that's a hoot...never seen one of these. Not exactly a grand piano. Bach had a keyboard built called the Lautenwerck; sounds just like a lute. He had 2 of them in his estate after his death, as well as a regular lute. He obviously loved that sound. He rewrote the 5th cello suite for lute; the manuscript is in a museum in Tokyo. Thnx for this.

Какая изысканная благородная музыка! Музыкант виртуозно творит волшебство! Мелодии, как цветы вплетаются в венок , дополняют друг друга, перикликаются и строятся. Они больше чем все слова раскрывают красоту этого мира в малом и великом.

Difficult to imagine it could ever have sounded this great in Bach's day. The instrument is fantastic and the player; the best lutenist I have ever heard for this material.

Oh, he sounded great and was well known, first as a chorister with a beautiful voice, then as a virtuoso violinist at a court called the "Little Versailles" because it was immersed in French culture and language, then as a great organist and a master composer who integrated French and Italian with German musical traditions. Many in who live in Leipzig or visited, and well as his children, learned under his direction and from his example as an organist the nuances of his performance practices. Now we have learned scholars, gifted artists, and our own responses.

It's exciting in SO many ways to hear this music played on the true "king of instruments," the instrument it was written for. There is well over 400 years of history here... alive! Thank you, Evangelina Mascardi!

Lol it's just a lute with some extra courses (strings) I believe. My music taste is very American by default, I didn't really know what a lute was until a couple months ago but I am loving it. The Turkish oud is also cool, it reminds me of the mix between this and a mandolin
