​@@AbdulGoodLooks From what I understand they actually increased consumption taxes by about double, and that was pretty much it lol. Most of the debt (about 40%) is held by the Bank of Japan too, so if they default their economy is well and truly screwed. Honestly, it is just a result of bad luck. They had economic destruction left over from WW2, they had a bad economic meltdown in the 90s, and they have had several disasters such as the 2011 Fukushima Disaster and the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami that have sapped their funds, to the point where they really have no way out.

Honestly they would probably be doing pretty well had their birth rates not crashed and burned, their population could be at over 200 million rn.

There will no longer be much Japs left in this world except old grannies and grandpas on their death bed in a few decades, for each 25 year old there will be two 75 year olds. the Japanese economy, was built for short term profit and longterm collapse, like many of the other economies right now, for example Germany has the same exact issue as Japan, but unlike Japan, Germany is a parasite country, actually better yet, a leech country that relays on immigration for population and new skilled workforce by braindraining their poorer neighbors, as the Germans themselves are on the extinction table. Japs on the other hand still have some sort of honour (minus the anime) so they do not accept much immigration the only way to salvation for the Japs is: 1- Mandatory de-urbanization 2-Mandatory de-industrialization 3-Mandatory impregnation facilities for like 10 to 20 years, and then they can return to normal. the reason for deurbanization is to drive up the birthrates, as no city had a replaceable birthrate in history ever. for de-industrialization then that is not necessary per-say but will be if you want to deurbanize, you can still industrialize town by town but it will be times inefficient to just focusing on a few major cities. for mandatory impregnation I was honestly just meming, deurbanization and deindustrialization will restore the birthrates on their own without issue, it just might be not as fast as would be needed for Japan to stand back on its feet, so if the Jappies want a fighting chance in a world that would eat them up if they ever showed weakness then they'd need as many new Japanese as fast as possible.

This game and its predecessors way of portraying government debt always really annoys me. How has noone involved in the development of this read anything about M0 debt? Or spoken to anyone who handles ways and means? This is not difficult information to find! Japan does not pay anywhere near 28.3% of its budget on interest (real figure is 10.95%). On it's newer debt it even gets paid interest as it issues negative interest bonds!
