Several mutation in APP can lead to faulty cleavage, mutations in PSEN1 and 2 ( part of gamma secretase complex ) can also lead to faulty cleavage. Apart from genetic reasons there are sporadic reasons as well

Nothing regarding this is well established but there are lot of prediction. Isoprenoids, vital compounds, may influence Alzheimer's. They aid cholesterol production linked to brain plaque formation. Statins, which lower cholesterol and isoprenoids, have uncertain Alzheimer's prevention potential. Isoprenoids also modify cell signaling proteins, linked to Alzheimer's. Their precise role in the disease requires further research for potential treatment or prevention strategies.

Atrophy is hard to reverse but you can mannage it with proper medication. There are medications which can help produce and release of more neurotransmitters and keep your brain active. Also many drugs can slow down the atrophy process. You need to consult a good doctor for that.
