Is traditional latin Mass more reverent ? Stop saying it is so Good article "on the subject : The way we talk about the liturgy matters, and to describe something as “irreverent” assumes a level of malicious intent on the part of worshipers that other terms do not. The word reverence means deep respect. Reverence is much more closely related to intentionality than to a particular ritual; it has more to do with one’s attitude than one’s attire. It also is deeply intertwined with how a particular ritual or liturgy inspires us to treat others, especially others whose preferences or values are different from our own A reverent liturgy should be within the guidelines the church offers, and it should encourage those in attendance to participate humbly, intentionally, respectfully and with gratitude as they strive to move closer to God. Too often, the descriptions of the Latin Mass as “more reverent” cite liturgical attributes that are inspired by European aesthetics and the sensibilities of overwhelmingly white congregations. By default, labeling the Latin Mass as “more” reverent-rather than one source of reverence for an individual Catholic or a group of us-diminishes the real sense of reverence present in our global church. The deep respect that reverence requires can be displayed in many ways. And it should be displayed in its diversity if we are to live out the universal nature of Catholicism. A community singing and clapping to hymns in Rwanda or Catholics in the Gospel choir praising God in a Mass in Harlem or suburban Catholics belting out a St. Louis Jesuits song are not inherently “less”-or more-reverent than Catholics attending the Latin Mass

@@choppy1356 what a strange conception of God you have. God’s language seems to have been Hebrew mostly and primarily, with a nudge of Aramaic - at least if Scriptures are to be taken into account. Then the NT authors wrote in Greek. I would hesitate to suggest God only started hearing prayers around the fourth century, with Jerome’s Vulgate. Latin sounds good, for sure, but there is nothing magic about it. The heart of the believer is what matters; not the language in which a prayer is formulated.
@markodebevec60712 жыл бұрын
@@JohnCampbell5650 You have it wrong. Jesus spoke Aramaic but taught and read Scripture in Hebrew - because the Jews of the time also had a sacred language. The official language of the Church is Latin, as taught by Pope St. Pius X and there are three sacred languages according to the teaching of the Church - Latin, Greek and Hebrew. The Fathers believed so because these three were written above The Lord's head on the cross. Hence, praying in Latin is helpful and superior, all other factors being equal. This is also the consensus of the saints.

From a questioning Protestant: it was the realization of the value of tradition that started me on this intellectual/spiritual journey 4 years ago. Tradition also provides a bulwark for us to lean upon when life inevitably becomes too much for our cognitive capacity in a given moment, because there is always something to fall back on that can be both heartfelt *or* rote. Rote and ritual that keep us grounded in reality are invaluable when lifes storms come. If you don't have tradition you the individual have to be the one coming up with all the different ways to handle the curveballs, and that can lead to burnout in all sorts of areas *very* quickly. Quite practically, tradition saves us from having to do some of that legwork, which allows our spirit the space it needs to do whatever God requires. Sometimes it has been all I can do to come up with the words to pray. If, however, I have the Lord's prayer before me, I don't need to do that, and my soul can simply meditate on the words and God's grace. It seems to me that there is value enough in that alone.

But just because an argument can be made, does not mean it's the best one. It's become pretty clear to me that most of the anti-Catholic rhetoric I heard was attacking straw men. I'm keen to find Protestant sources who aren't attacking straw men, to see where the weight of evidence actually stands. At the moment, it seems that the Church has the upper hand philosophically, and that could mean that Protestantism doesn't have the rigour there, or it could mean that I've simply not found it, I don't know yet. I am currently reading Trent Horn's Case for Catholicism, as well as Tim Staples Behold Your Mother, since those are the biggest question marks for me. The recent divisiveness in the Church is rather bizarre, in that some embrace radically Traditional concepts, while others embrace radical Charismatic ones, while some attempt to bind the two. 😳 I believe the Catechism is the most well rounded text brought forth from the Church to address this. Any extreme concept is dangerous. The traditions of the Church are very rich and beautiful when approached in the proper manner but it cannot become legalistic. By the same token, charisms cannot be conjured or become Gnostic viewpoints like we see in some denominations. Again, the Catechism strikes a balance between the two and has helped me tremendously to understand. God Bless
@Tom-zc9gs2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, in respecting tradition we must not become slaves to the idea that only form inherently carries meaning and that any attempt in developing that form in different ways, even if done with a meaningful and coherent purpose, can lead us astray. I do actually believe some so called "rad trads" enjoy giving formality all of the importance, while the "libs" want to cut it all away and move towards total relativity. Extremes, that's what they are. The Church in its history constantly shifts between need for reform and preservation of its core tenets and rituals. I've attended Novus Ordo masses blessed with the respect of tradition and ancient music, and the absence of liturgical latin didn't make them any less sacred. In conclusion, the Catechism should be taught and cited more often when dealing with many of these issues :)

@@irishandscottish1829 what you've experienced is pharisaical thought, that only by following forms and rituals of an identitarian group you will find salvation. That's not what the Gospels are about. Jesus fought this kind of thinking the whole time, nobody putting form over substance can claim to be absolutely in the right, like the pharisees when asked to cast the first stone. This is not an interpretation, it's Church teaching. I will always be wary of those who say "We are the true Church". If you're the true Church, your most important mission is to submit to Christ and God's will, not impose your own on others. Again, the Gospels are pretty clear on this issue. There should be dialogue, not infighting and conspiracy thinking inside the Church. @@OrthoLou it’s more than “acknowledging the destruction of Francis” (which I don’t believe is a thing) and you know that. To claim so is just being disingenuous. The numbers don’t lie, but they don’t reflect the entire picture either. Where the Church has struggled recently in other areas it has improved in others (for example, outside of countries like the US and Europe the Church is growing, ironically for you in “Novus Ordo” Churches and not TLM communities). Mass attendance, vocations, and marriages within the Church were plummeting before Vatican II and, by and large, were more than likely the result of the western world being bludgeoned to death with a century of wars that *absolutely* rattled the faith of millions upon millions of people. And the Mass of Paul VI is far from lame. Maybe if “Rad Trads” were actually traditional Catholics they could see that. It is a culmination of a lot of work that spans back to Pope Pius XII and even beyond. All “Rad Trads” have succeeded in doing is ironically departing from tradition, embracing a spirit of schism, and crumbling into actual modernism (which shouldn’t be surprising since this is the community that was being consumed by it in the days of St. Pius X) all because of this fetishization of Latin (even though Mass was being celebrated in the vernacular well before V2 reforms). Again, there are much bigger problems in the Church today than what version of the Mass you like, and honestly the Church would probably be just fine without the Extraordinary Form lingering around. As for that quip about the laity singing, Popes Pius X, Xi, and XII disagree entirely. All three advocated for this active participation and Pius X, as Cardinal Sarto, once said he believed the singing of the faithful to be better than any sacred polyphony. We are members of Christ’s Body, not spectators for a priest.

I was recently discussing with my dad why alter serving has changed so much. When I was an alter server in the 90’s our Priest had us ringing the bells and gong during transubstantiation (they still do that). BUT we also always used the communion plate - being told how important it was that no part of Jesus fell to the floor but practising so we didn’t whack the parishioners Chins with it 😂 My brother was always the incense carrier - the Priest frequently used incense. My brother would also lead the procession with carrying the large alter crucifix so everyone’s eyes were on Jesus as the priest walked to the alter. While me and my sister carried two big candles in candle sticks (yes I know the views of many trads re girls alter serving so would not approve of me and my sister being alter servers). The Priest frequently had us carry the Aspergillum and Aspersorium for him so he could use it. He would have one of us stand and hold one of his alter books at different parts of the mass. I also remember feeling the luckiest person in the world when the Bishop visited for confirmations - wearing the silk humeral veil. Knowing I wasn’t worthy to touch such blessed items with my bare hands but I was being trusted to hold the Bishops items. So many things we did that was once common place but less used by Priests training under Vat II. Despite being brought up in NO my dad instilled in us all the things he was taught at Catholic school during Vat I. All our Priests were also very traditional and still using Vat I teachings. The one Sister (all the other nuns were elderly so no longer able to travel to all the churches in the area - lots of small towns close together) who travelled to our Church made a point of over seeing all our Sunday school. She also arranged/encouraged all youth to go to the yearly summer youth get away for a week to meet other Catholic kids from other towns (I loved it) and when you were a teenager to go on the youth pilgrimage. I still remember having rehearsals to learn how to do everything for the normal weekend mass and then also rehearsals before every visit from the Bishop. It really saddens me that alter servers are missing out on the wonder of the things I did as an alter server.

This is exactly how I feel about the Mass. It feels like we were sold something, told it was a better deal than the old product, and given no basis for what used to be.

I am a Rad Trad. I am a Radical Traditional Catholic Radical: from Latin radic-/radix, meaning “root”: a basic principle, foundation. I look to the basic, foundational principles of Catholicism, which are found in her Tradition. In other words, I am Catholic.

I think all Eastern-rite goers eventually have to admit that the Western equivalent of what they experience in the Eastern liturgies is the TLM and not the Novus Ordo. At least that was the case for me. I find it disheartening sometimes to be judged and criticized for being a traditionalist when I seemed to be getting a free pass going to the Eastern rite. And when that comes from people who go the Easrern rite themselves, I find it extremely hypocritical.

This is the 3rd time or so that I've heard reference to hockey sticks and other bizarre items being part of the Mass. I'm in Canada, and I've never witnessed this. Is this common in the United States? I feel very blessed as I have found our N.O Mass to be very reverent. Our altar servers are all in cassocks, and are trained to be very reverent. There is regular incensing of the Altar, the Eucharist, Priest and congregation during mass. We do not hold hands during the Our Father, although I have seen and been part of it at other churches, and I'm not even sure I understand where that came from but I know it was popular for a while.

Same. From Canada. Now go to NO in the U.S. Picture painted by trads is inaccurate. At least based on my twenty years in Can and quite a bit in US.

The Prayer Rule of the Theotokos (aka Our Lady's Psalter aka the Rosary) has a long history in the East although at times it has been obscured. St. Seraphim of Sarov revived it during the 19th century at a time when it had fallen out of use (according to my understanding). Taylor Marshall has talked about this at length in some of his videos.

The sacred language and rubrics of the TLM protect the faithful from the individuality of the priest offering the Holy Sacrifice if the Mass. Some people in the congregation may identify with certain temperaments or personalities of pastors, but in the TLM, the only one coming across through the priest and in the priest himself is Christ.

I wish my catholic education would have included latin. It would have made college so much easier when I chose to go into the healthcare field. So much Latin, and Greek. It’s easier to learn than we think and is foundational to many spoken languages. For example; In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti - In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit

I don't consider myself a "trad" because we have no TLM where we live but my priest said that I'm a conservative and I think I have a reason to be proud. To be deeper in study results to being conservative in many instances. Its just that if we keep adding these novelties and accomodation in the Novus Ordo world, we dilute the message that do not awaken people's fascination, adding to the fact that many parishes are not doing things to propagate the faith as it should be. Younger generations become less and less reverent to the sacred because they have been mostly raised in an era that downplays or ignores the visible signs that are supposed to lead our minds into the mystical. I suppose there are many Catholics in the millennial generation who are liberal-leaning, relativistic in morals and have a theology not far from a non-denom Evangelical of the sugar-coated gospel types. Being aware of the crises in the Church, with barely anyone to support me in my parish continues to be a challenge to me.

I have no problem saying the Hail Mary, however saying it 50-150 times is the issue...I think it has much more meaning and is more heartfelt just saying it once ir twice with other morning/evening prayers then 50+ times, that's when it becomes robotic and you have to question is it really honoring...

Tradition is what connects us with revelation and the apostles. Without it, we'd just be making up some projection of our own psychology as "religion." Trads just want the faith, and if there's any negativity to new things, it's because we can't access the apostolic traditions without someone who has received them passing them on to us. It's frustrating when you want the faith revealed by Christ, and just keep getting novus opinions and ideas instead.

A good point is that, not because something is antique in it's time origins or difficult to comprehend from our own culture/environment this means it's bad. Guess what is antique and uncomprehensible? Jesuscrist and the fact that he decided to leave his beloved in this earth, etc. Saints woulnd't dare to deny the wisdom from old brought to their minds and souls. Just as the bible states, we have to listen to our old people, wise ones, our grandparents and great grandpas, because they are full of knowledge. Also how come instead of improving something in order to inspire more love, joy, sense of awe, of intimacy, etc we come and reduce the prayers, change the whole sacraments way and more stuff like that? And why is this all related to protestants point of view (from what I was told) and influence during Vatican II? This is very recessive instead of progressive. I really liked Timothy Flanders's argument. It might be time for you to interview Tim Flanders! That would be awesome Matt!

Mr. Fradd, maybe you remember that I'm a staunch traditionalist Catholic who abandoned the Novus Ordo for the TLM nearly seven years ago. The Novus Ordo is sacramentally valid. But I still feel morally obligated to boycott because the Ottaviani Intervention and five Catholic priests convinced me that the Novus Ordo rite is incompatible with what the Coi's Council of Trent teaches about the theology Holy Mass. For me, there are major problems with Vatican-II-style ecumenism and what Vatican II calls "religious liberty." Thank God that, if I understand, the Church hasn't required Catholics to adopt any of those novelties. So I resist them. If I'm mistaken, I need to humble myself enough to let the Church correct me. Meanwhile, though I may be dead wrong, it seems to me that even if the hermeneutic of continuity is genuine, Pope Francis has rejected it. I'm not telling anyone what to do. I'm not trying to be like a Protestant. But I need you to know that for me, being a traditionalist Catholic is a duty. I'd love to see you join our clan. Feel free to take my thoughts with a pillar of salt since I'm only a layman, not an expert in any Catholic field. Please do me a favor, though. Would you please read the Ottaviani Intervention or at least its Introduction from Cardinals Ottaviani and Bacci? Then, again, do what Our Lord wants you to do. Whether become a traditionalist stay conservative, I need you to know why I think I should never attend the Novus Ordo. lms.org.uk/ottaviani-intervention
