“It affects me that Denmark, which I love and care about, punishes me because of the family I was born into,” says 19-year-old Ibrahim el-Hassan.
El-Hassan was born in Denmark, but is considered a "non-Western descendant".
He grew up in Vollsmose, a suburb classified by authorities as a "hard ghetto".
When the Danish government introduces its "ghetto package" of laws, El-Hassan decides to defend his neighbourhood.
Armed with social media and a petition, he begins a summer of protests which eventually take him to the halls of Denmark’s Parliament.

It is ironic to see this discussion in a Qatar state owned media. Qatar does not offer citzenship for any type of immigrant, it doesn't matter if the person is born there or not. There are milions of Pakistani and Indian immigrant workers there and none of then will ever have qatari citzenship, neither their children!

Let me first be clear, if a country wants to reduce or stop immigration, I think it is their sovereign right, so are the setting of laws regarding granting citizenship. So, if you are legally able to get a saudi or qatari citizenship, you are bound to get equal rights. These people may be children of immigrants, but it was the government that provided them citizenship, so they are equal now.

the 1st time in my life when i felt racism was when i lived in Odense and it was not from the Dane's but from the muslin population. I remember i worked for this guy and he asked me if i was christian i said that im agnostic and he started calling me a dog in his language .The reason why he started calling me a dog is because in their beliefs the Quran is a continuation of the Bible so in that case I was no better then a dog and I was not treated any better for being a non believer. I also remember the 1st time i was visiting vollsmose i got spat in the face by a guy with a scooter and when i went to one of the shops there i was not welcome and they were telling me to leave almost starting a fight just because I was white. So please dont tell me that it is this wonderful beautiful place where the view is so good that your family moved there because of it and not the cheap rent or family connections but of course the Danes and their evil policies are to blame. Please give me a break. For those who have not lived there please don't speak. Arab integration does not work and will never do not as long as they don't want to integrate. it's not because of the Dane's they have done more then enough to help them and give them opportunities and the chance for a better life. I cant remember also on so many occasions i get to know some people from muslin decent and kept talking about how it's us against them(Dane's) which they were open to share given that I'm not Danish and please don't tell me that he does not know what is happening. What is this circus. Only the stupid and ignorant people will believe you and people in Denmark are not stupid. They know exactly what is going on and as much as you try to hide it it shows and it stinks and will not be tolerated.

It's interesting to see how other countries and cultures view ethnicity and nationality. In countries that have been experiencing diverse ethnic groups such as the US since the 1800s, they've learned to see these people as Americans in identity and nationality, not by ethnicity. But in European nations that have stayed homogeneous mainly until today, you see the same problems that the US has faced back in the 1800s. What does it mean to be American? (or from a ethnically diverse country like Brazil, Mexico, Cuba, Philippines) is a different question to what does it mean to be say, German, Japanese, or Danish?. Anyone can look American since it's a national identity but to the Europeans who have stayed strongly homogeneous for decades, it's a different story. To them, it's culture, language, and ethnicity all in 1 identity.

Yes, that is one way in which the question differs depending on context. The other is that e.g. Scandinavian countries have huge welfare states. We pay so much more in taxes than Americans. That means that everyone is much more interdependent. Such societies cannot tolerate too much social fragmentation. If people do not trust each other - which will happen if they live in segregation, and with certain groups being extremely overrepresented among criminals and those living off welfare (which is an empirical fact, not an opinion) - people will no longer be OK with paying high taxes. In sum, if segregation takes hold, this will lead to mistrust and ethnic tensions, which will lead to the dismantling of the welfare state. Sweden is a good example of what happens if you let in A LOT of culturally distant people (Sweden has more than 15x refugees per capita than the US) while providing generous welfare: a huge increase in crime, abuse of the welfare system, a rise of the right-wing populist, right-wing surge among young people, increased fear, segregated schools and houses, etc. Not saying they are doing everything right, but it is obvious that Denmark has to do something if they want to preserve their current system, which they ought to want, seeing that they are one of the most successful countries on Earth.

Nonetheless mixing the neighbors can only be a good thing for integration and diminution of racism/hate/ hostility Vs fellow Danish people. The forced daycare is awesome! It'll allow the women to go to work, become more independent economically, uplift the whole family economic status and start them on moving on from the acceptance of social inferiority they currently live in.

This is because Denmark was a homogeneous country until the 50s when the first Turkish migrants moved to the government to work in the construction sector. It was in the 80s that the government received many refugees from different ethnicities. People are just not used to seeing a brown person in their classroom. But that has changed, and when my generation, born in the 90s, gets to power, politics will look much different because we all have studied and befriended someone with a different skin color. We must be patient with ignorance because that cannot vanish into thin air.

Nope! No one deserves to be condemned to live in or near an alien, crime ridden ghetto in Denmark, Sweden, Norway - no where in Scandinavia. If this guy wants to live in such a terrible place, there are plenty of such ghettos in places like the Gaza Strip, Islamabad Pakistan or Algeria. Algeria was part of France in 1957 and they experienced the same clash of cultures and it ended up in a brutal war. Danish people and all those who hones move to Denmark and try very hard to assimilate, to respect the local laws, customs, languages - they deserve to live in Denmark not some migrant slum in Lebanon or some no go Islamic, drug dealing place in Birmingham England.

First of all, in Islam, using or dealing with drugs is a great sin. So, saying "islamic drug dealing place" is utter bullsht. Also, Algeria was different. It was a part of France, but it was an apartheid state, comparable to South Africa. Algerians had no rights and wanted independence. The French pretty much did a lot to reduce and oppress the population with systematic rapes and mass murders, but fortunately, it backfired and they didn't succeed. Hopefully, other peoples of Africa will rise to.

The research is not correct. A solid analysis made by the government showed that there are local communities/areas that are not up til normal danish standards and danish values,. criminal rates, educational level, unempployment. On that background the government launched 22 initiatives to deal with the upcoming of parallel societies and one of their initiatives is to make run dawn areas better to live in. Some of the iniatives is e.x. children in ghettos is to attend daycare and learning danish. Another initiative is that if you as an immigrant send your children to your homeland due to resocializion to other values than danish the parents is off childrens wellfare money. Hatespeech is also prohibited by law and one could be accused for doing so. An Imam was accused for doing so ("kill the Jews" he told the congregation in the moske) and afterwards had a 6 months conditional sentence. The persons in the "documentary" show their troubles having two cultures, but they are been given the same possibilities as other danes, but they are feeling victimized and excluded, which they are not. Maybe they should try another approach to live in a free society who offers free education and healthcare and other wellfare uppertunities - don't ask what your new country can do for you but ask what you can do for your new country and try a little harder to unpack your mental suitcase.

There aren't any socalled jewellery law, but the case is that, if you want the state to give you means and support to maintain a living when youre out of money and work and have no means, i.e. pension, a car, a flat or other stuff the state will support you. And if you do have means, you wil have to make your living by the se means. And that goes for emmigrants and refugees too. That has been stated by the constitution (1849) and implemented later in social laws. Why on earth should the law not take in the refugees in this matter when this law is for other citizens in the country? The idea of refugees should be excepted is indulgence and clientism. Dont ask what your guestcountry can do for you, but ask for what can you do for your guestcountry.

If the Danes want to stay a homogenuous society, it is their natural right. Denmark is the home country of the native Danes. You cannot become Danish like you cannot become French, German, Polish etc. This is no discriminatipn or racism. Nobody says other ethnicitirs are less worth. And sorry, migrants are no Danes, thus it is not about treating equals unequally. Being Danish or any other Eurean nationality is about identity, family, culture, values, shared history & fate and more. A passport doesn't change your identity. And foreigners cannot claim acceptance. It is up to the host to welcome somebody or not. In fact, no passports should be issued to foreigners at all. A residence & work permits (if migrants are needed / add value) are sufficient. In general, if migrants are unhappy, go home and fix your own home country instead of expecting foreign countries that are successful and happy to change without any need.

I think this is a failure of the UN and other human rights orgs. All nations signatory to the Refugee/Stateless Convention are expected to host these refugees with the condition that when their place of origin is relatively safe, they can return. Apparently, this is still not possible. But international laws also mandate of either local integration, resettlement, and voluntary repatriation or return. As what I am seeing here, local integration and return clearly are not working so more work should be done towards resettlement to other countries. Perhaps resettle these refugees who have a hard time assimilating Western culture to another Arab country that is able to accept their culture and religion. Trying to force your religious and cultural beliefs to a host country will definitely create more animosity. The UN then should put more effort is screening those refugees who are fit - or are able to successfuly integrate - to stay longer in the host country.

Expats are for those expatriated to a foreign country just to work on a contractual basis. But due to cultural appropriation the word expat is used more commonly. However it isn't a correct term to use for a person or family who moved to a foreign land to live and build their lives and generations there

So how long does a community have to live somewhere to be considered “native”? This is a very tribal way of thinking. everyone has immigrated at some point of history. The only truly native people are the Africans still living in Africa.

Some of the comments compare middle east to Europe. First, Europe had stronger economy with less population, so they need people to come, the opposite in the middle east. That's why Europe has immigration policy. Which many of the eiddle east has it on had it before, like in late 1800s many Europeans migrated to egypt as it had better chance for living at that time compared to their home country. Now once you have someone on your land that legally received the citizenship, it is unfair to treat him or her as a 2nd class citizen, if you want th to work you should spread the tolerance in the community so people would be more acceptable to the new immigrants and would allow them to work in their businesses without thinking of their race or religion

@Hotovo Done most people who do bad things will justify it, even hitler did. and how are they not 2nd class citizens when you sentence them more if they happen to be of non western origin or if they are coming from certain community, a crime is a crime , this is racism and discrimination. also taking babies away from their family does not help reduce crime rate, it will probably create more problems, and how is forcing them to learn more about christian religion and celebrations, would help reduce crime rate when they will tell you that their religion also teaches the value of being good to others and do no harm, imagine if a muslim country does that to their minorities what would you say about that. and how is a four-year prison sentence on immigrant parents who ""force"" their children to make extended visits to their country of origin is not a discrimination. the problem is the media that keeps demonizing immigrants, thats what causes them to not be able to find a job easily if they are not accepted by others, so probably those who have fear of people because of their religion or their colour of skin, those should get educated to be more acceptable, and learn about the values of those immigrants, and they will find good in that. crime rate will go up for sure if the unemployment is up, thats the problem that politician need to solve, going to racist policies just shows who incapable they are to lead a country

Look in Indian the people born there are called Indians but they are from different culture and background. And they keep their culture, language, food and what they wear. So these people are Danish if they are born there but if you expect them to change their culture, language and food just because, they are born there is not right. There are so many countries on this earth where people live in same country from thousand of years with different cultures and back ground but they are from that one country. In Pakistan all the people are called Pakistani but within the Pakistan those people are from different culture and back ground and even their native language is different so they should all leave their culture and become one? The real problem is white Danish people are fed up of so many people from other countries in their country and they are losing their identity. So they are making excuse for assimilation thingy. Two different cultures can never assimilate. Look today Ireland, England and scottland being one country but don't like to be under English because, they have their own culture and ethnicity. How Danish people can expect Arabs or African assimilate and become like white Danish?

That doesn’t make any sense their are many diverse countries in the world. The Danish people aren’t losing their culture, culture changes with time culture doesn’t stay stagnant. How Danish people lived 100 years ago is different to how they lived now. People can integrate and foreigners blend their culture with their new home. The culture evolves into something new

@@Terraider Romani people are living in Europe around thousands years did they change? There are so culture living in different part of the world did they change? Arabs, Africans, Afghanis and people from Asia have different culture and foods and they won't change and mix with Europeans. Turkish people are living in Europe since long time did they change their culture no. Because your culture is your identity and people want to follow it.
