I live in the US where race is openly discussed and yet this piece moved me beyond so much that has happened here in my homeland. I think because, in the US, the majority of us at least have enough fiber to admit that race IS an issue. The open, seemingly universal denial of racial issues in Denmark is staggering. Denmark is touted as a wonderful place to live, with good education and wealth, and yet the cognitive dissonance I am witnessing seems to contradict that. A first world country in which the people cannot even recognize that saying "black lives matter" does not mean that "white lives do not matter." I hope the Danes are able to evolve and end up looking back on the verdict and the way they handled this case as a mistake.

As a fellow human being they may as well be my children. I share the same feelings and thoughts as the parents and my children would feel similarly. I do not understand how people categorize others by physical attributes when it's so beyond evident than we all share similar emotions and biologically we are the same. Omg, that BT editor and the prosecutor are so in denial and they’re showing his white privilege. Denmark is working very hard to keep the country predominantly white. Another observation is there was no mention from the opposition about the boys family. They were not with the boy’s mother at anytime. What happened to the assailant’s mother? She did what Emmet Till’s accuser did-distort the truth. I highly doubt Phillip actually and with clear motives, purposely touched his “friends” mom’s breast. For reference I am a US born Mexican-American, lived my whole life in Southern California. It’s interesting… this whole racist/racial discussion. I understand how there could be a large portion of white/Caucasian people who might be frustrated over “incessant” whining or non-stop playing of the “race card” as if it’s something non-whites or minorities use to trump an argument or shut white people down. Especially when said individual may not feel that they themselves are racist. But to reiterate something that has been said over and over before, until you have lived as a black/brown or non white person in a white majority society you will simply not understand. While I feel like I look obviously Latino I have passed for white before. I often forget that I am a “minority”. That is until I am rudely reminded of that fact. While I don’t let it bother me so much, it’s definitely a hard feeling to describe. Imagine never being given the benefit of the doubt in any situation. Imagine immediately being second guessed by people and when attempting to find common ground, being denied full stop before given the opportunity to be heard. And ALL because you are not white. It is very disheartening. So if by chance you find yourself as a white person and feel or have ever felt contempt for the discussion surrounding race I urge you to reevaluate your reasoning. You are always heard, seen and accepted and considered “normal”. The instant that is challenged you get upset. We live every day feeling this way. Until you recognize that, you won’t fully understand. Simple as that.
@SmokeyChipOatley3 жыл бұрын
@metamorphosis in process I think you either misread what I wrote or got the wrong message entirely. I never implied that black/brown people aren’t racist or are not capable of being racist themselves against whites. They most definitely can be and I don’t condone such behavior nor imply it doesn’t exist or is somehow “not an issue”. What I’m referring to isn’t as simple as having two random black ladies smack talk you simply for being white. The core difference between what I’m attempting to describe and what you’re likely describing is an inherent power imbalance. Not to downplay shitty racist behavior by minorities towards whites, because that is real and it’s bullshit. That being said I don’t quite understand how I’m being “entitled” by pointing out the fact that if you (as in a random person) are part of a cultural majority in a country/community/etc. you cannot fully understand what it feels like to be an “outsider/minority/etc.”? To clarify, this only applies to countries with a historically white-majority rule. Like I said previously, it’s difficult to describe. But that shouldn’t be a reason to dismiss it outright. Chances are we’re still not going to fully see eye to eye but I hope you at least understand that (at least in MY case) I’m not here to vilify you because then I would be a big hypocrite. The only reason I’m so vocal about it is because I can sit here and list every single time I’ve been directly verbally attacked for being Latino and list every word used but I cannot translate that feeling to you because no equivalent words exist for white people and the few that kinda exist and might be “offensive” don’t convey the same sting because we grew up in a society with white people in control. I hope that sums it up for you, in the most well-meaning way possible. Thanks for replying by the way. No sarcasm.
@PrimordialChaos072 жыл бұрын
Latinos we’re consider legally white until the 70s. There’s never been or will ever be a black / brown alliance. @@aleksandrkomarov9231 With all due respect, let me explain it to you this way. Now I can translate the joke into your native language and for as much as I can try to explain it you will likely never find it funny despite fully understanding the joke and why it’s funny even after I explain it thoroughly and to the best of my ability. This is essentially what I was trying to say. It has nothing to do with any inherent racial quality in a person’s DNA. In the US we’re very vocal and have a long history of publicly recognizing the racism in our country. Then you have these other European countries, majority white, that love to deny the racism that exists. When I see this group of supposed friends talking, in their faces all I see is white people wanting to assure each other and believe that they couldn’t possibly be racist themselves, or know anyone that is. Many white people would take offense to what I’m saying here, but oh well. Many try to lecture Black and other POC when somebody us voice our distrust of them, especially the ones that straight up say they do not want to deal with them at all. They want everything to boil down to individual actions, and ignore the bigger systemic and societal impact of racism. This is why I speak openly to or around my kids about these issues. However, I once met a young man, probably about the same age as Phillip, and his family in NYC, outside of the NYC Library on 5th Avenue. As we were sitting near each other the family and I started talking. The parents seemed nice enough but they went off to do something while the son continued talking to me.I don't remember exactly what we were talking about, but somehow the topic of being mixed race came and up his response was: Who wants to be mixed race?" For someone so young to have that sort of hateful opinion says a lot about the people he comes into contact with. And as an obviously mixed race person, I definitely took offense. His comment has always stuck with me, so sadly, I'm not that surprised that this hate crime occurred in Denmark. Side note: For any minorities thinking of traveling to Denmark, The Netherlands, Germany or Austria you should know that all of these countries share very similar ideas about race and equality. Similar as in they all believe that they are progressive, yet none are.

@Tuy Randolph So get your governments out of their countries' affairs and then they won't have an excuse to come to yours in the first place. No more oil from the middle east, no more diamonds, food, or other natural resources from Africa and every single white European goes back to Europe and has no authority in any other region of the world. You ready for that? I hear a lot of talking but no actual DOING.
@JesusChrist2000BC3 жыл бұрын
@Tuy Randolph Denmark spent hundreds of yeaes invading and raiding half of Europe and even Northern Africa so you can't claim that you want to be "left alone" all of a sudden. Denmark was the scourge of the earth for hundreds of years that's why the British hated them.

What is a black woman doing in Denmark? She should raise her policy in Africa where there is a need to speak out. Leave the Dane to the Dane in the internal affairs of Denmark. This editor is correct. All the reporters are white. Is not white a colour?

When we say “BLM” we are not saying other lives don’t matter. We are trying to bring awareness to the cruelties that people of colored are subject to based only their ethnicity. But this is often a common reaction among Europeans. “The Gueto Law” is not racist because it’s not called the “anti-colored people law”. You can have racist tattoos, and call people racist names and tortured a colored person and people still say that you are racist.

"Coloured," Michael Dyrby. In one breath Michael Dyrby talks about facts and in the same breath is accusing the person who is asking a question of wanting to make the story about race...a completely factless supposition. He also does a bit of slight of hand in saying who would know, who investigated, etc. He basically said that his news organization relied on the police's investigation and the official story, which makes me question what kind of investigation his reporters did if they only interviewed the police. All the sighs.

@@theghostofarchiebunker8859 specifically, mom said he was unhappy on the Island and didn't want to stay on the island. Many fascists and white supremacists start out as the victims of bullies. If Phillip was also bullied (as this 58 minutes makes painfully clear) then they could have been "childhood friends"... it's called trauma bonding. More likely, the entire island is small, and "friendship" is simply "we grew up on the island together". Idk culture is vastly different from America it makes me super proud to be from American Because I don’t know wtf I’d do in Phillips position. The way Denmark thinks of race is stuck back in the American 1940’s but with a liberal progressive political makeup. Which contrasts differently from the progressive movement in America. Denmark are denialist when it comes to race becusee they want to have the Bragging rights of having a progressive society who is above racism. No your way in denial to a point that scares me more than the far right here in America. It’s almost like a bad movie Seeingt the BLM in Denmark but it makes me proud to see those allies standing in solidarity and standing together, that is to not be just glazed over bcuz I’d argue they’re fight is greater in Denmark bcuz their political main stage are denialist, here in America they just hide but once the cats out the bag it’s out the bag, Denmark are a few shade different which is infinitely interesting

Out of all this conversation, I've yet to hear the personal reason for which Mr. Phillip M. Johansen was killed. This is why the BLM reasoning is in place. If he beat his "friend"s butt, took money or screwed his girl, I'd understand. The fact that there is no plausible explanation for the killing, gives the doubters every right to assume anything. So, in that, BLM has a reason to exist in this conversation.

1st of all, you'd understand that he was slowly tortured to death in the woods, so badly the Police wouldn't show his mother his face? That's a reasonable response to you? 2nd of all, the "black man rapes a white woman" accusation has been used as an excuse so many killings in America, from single lynchings like Emmett Till to entire massacres like Tulsa and Rosewood. When the perpetrators are white supremacists, don't believe them.

this is such an eye-opening piece to someone who lives in a very split red/blue state in the United States. I experience racism and BLM protests alike and as a white woman it is still heart breaking to see my friends of color being treated unfairly. Seeing how absolutely brutal it is in other countries just makes me more adamant on making sure our generation realizes just how important it is to be inclusive. It really brought tears to my eyes at the end when they quietly spoke their sayings for Phillip at his place of death. The amount of respect these BLM protesters had and the amount of disrespect the ALM protesters had in this piece were so eye opening to someone like me. This was truly an amazing way to portray this event in a way that can reach all audiences correctly on this topic.
